Premier Guitar’s John Bohlinger met with guitar legend Robin Trower before his show at Nashville’s Marathon Music Works. When you watch this video, you get the impression that Trower’s epic tone has way more to do with his hands than his gear. It’s like alchemy.
Robin Trower tours with three of his Fender Custom Shop Signature Stratocasters. The sigs feature custom pickups created by Trower and Fender master builder Todd Krause, with a reverse wound/reverse polarity middle pickup. They also include a humbucking option in the second and fourth positions. Other features include an alder body, custom C-shaped maple neck with abalone dot position inlays, and a large ’70s-style headstock.

..was watching a crappy interview with Robin, and the question was asked as to how he would describe himself. I thought of that very phrase. It's one my thesis supervisor uses often. Uncanny.

is maybe he and ritchie blackmore the only guitar players playing the CBS both with 76 years old !!! and still rocking both more Robin because he don´t left the Stratocaster for the Acoustic like Ritchie and later Blackmore try to play riffs but he can´t play like on 90´s but Robin still kicking ass on the Stratocaster !!!

That must have been an amazing experience... wow, man. I can't even fathom being that good and that lucky to be able to play for such a legend. I'm a bedroom composer and friendly jammer, and always wanted to form a band and play out, though my performance anxiety is through the roof, sadly, no matter how deeply I feel music. I had the fortune to meet Steve Vai (the guy who inspired me to play 7-string guitar), and he hand-signed my arm (which I had tattooed the day after!), and gave me the seemingly simple yet sage advice of, "play what you love," and it's there every time I pick up my guitar. I'm quite jealous of you, good sir, haha. Do you have any tidbits of wisdom, and other great stories that you could share with me?

I didnt listen to Robin growing up ( i was born in 71) but when i started playing guitar my guitar teacher suggested I listen to bridge of sighs....I listen to his music several times a week now, it never gets old, Robin is underrated and James Dewar was a great bass player and very under appreciated singer in my humble opinion. Music of today sucks...

Don’t feel too bad for Robin. I did experience him in the 70s and he was HUGE. His stage show had the highest wattage and amazing light shows and he filled arenas 150 nights a year. From what I have read about him he is a very private and family oriented man and my sense is that he is very content with how things have worked out.

Critics attacked Jimi Hendrix for using effects pedals and sounds. They called him gimmicky. "His response was, "The whole world is full of gimmicks. I'm just trying to produce the right sound that's in my head." When I heard Jimi says those words, I was no long concerned with what people thought about pedals. Clapton uses a Leslie cabinet for the organ along with his Fender Twin or Hot Rod to give him the sound that he wants.

In August 1969, my car was packed with everything I owned, including my 1968 Reissue Les Paul & my Fender Twin, and I was one day away from leaving for Colorado to audition with Judy Roderick for her new band, 100,000 Buffaloes. The day before I was leaving, I went to the Atlantic City Rock Festival (about two weeks before Woodstock) and saw Robin play in person. He was like Hendrix........nothing like his Procul Harem days. LIsten! Let's not go around bashing one musician over another. Stop and think about this: What if, in the whole world you only had ONE musician? He/she might be your very most favorite but consider a whole lifetime with only that ONE musician. You'd hate it; I guarantee it. Support ALL musicians everywhere. It takes a special person to be able to learn all the fundamentals of musicianship alone just to be able to play, and that doesn't mean you'd be a number one anything (band/lead/solo artist/etc.) this just means that you are in a special group of people who are willing to wade in and climb through all that musicianship takes. Let's give creds where creds are due. Okay, we have our favorites, but one person's dislikes are another person's likes. There is room enough for all different tastes. I don't like Jazz per se, but I love musicians (Ginger Baker/Jack Bruce) who are trained in Jazz because it brings another dimension to standard Blues. Let's keep a positive attitude and love and respect ALL of our musicians. Their music truly makes life worth the living.

John's grin when Robin played the opening notes to Bridge of Sighs was awesome. 🙂

Opened for RT in the mid-80s and I was very surprised to see we used nearly the exact same pedal setup.. All were the same, an old (new at time) Tube Screamer, a standard Cry-Baby and the same chorus pedal (can't remember the brand..) The difference was whatever he was using for The Bridge of Sighs effect.. It was beautifully simple and his tone was incredible.. We all played the same basic pentatonic licks he did, but HE just had a way of playing relaxed, fluid and unrushed..

Carl, what a memory that must be for you! I saw RT on the "Passion" tour at Summers on the Beach, Fort Lauderdale. He went into a VOX wah, Ibanez TS9, Dunlop Uni-Vibe Stereo Chorus UV-1SC, and BOSS CE-2. Of course, there weren't the many choices and boutique pedals that we have on the market, today. Still, that's all he needed. I believe that he used the CE-2 only on "Daydream". And, of course, RT is known to switch pedals in and out of the line-up with regularity. I get the distinct impression that RT would sound like RT with just about any dirt box.

Trower was an absolute guitar god in the 1970s, richly deserved. Great to see him alive and well and still killing it!
