1- Robin Williams and Billy Crystal were in the same or a nearby studio, shooting some movie (probably Father's Day) 2- During a break they were walking around and just stumbled on the filming of Friends 3- The Friends director asks them if they're willing to do a cameo and they were 4- They film this with no script, completely improvised 5- They do it in one fucking take WHAT UNEQUALED LEGENDS.
Robin Willams was a genius ... His Mork &Mindy ...to his Patch Adams ..to Good Morning Vietnam ..to Bicentennial Man ...his Oscars hosting ..to Birdcage ..Dead poets society.... There were good roles/bad roles ...but there was NEVER a bad performance ❤
The fact that this dialogue was completely improvised shows us the genius of that incredible due - especially Robin Williams, who blurt out that accent with no preparation. Joey also threw in the scene "So you're the gynecologist"
@@iyerviking It's true the two of them were on set and the writers quickly asked if they wanted to show up on scene. None of the stars knew anything about it. Everything was made up on the fly lol
Doesn't surprise me that Billy and Robin improvised so well, but also doesn't surprise me that the cast of friends could as well, I was at the taping of one of the episodes, and some of the funniest stuff was improvised and didn't end up in the edited version.
Whenever I think of this scene, I always hear "Like when you go bowling and you know you're in someone else's shoes" "That's the one!" This little cameo is great.
If I recall correctly, Billy and Robin actually crashed the set, as they were filming another project nearby. They basically showed up, caused trouble and left. lol Monica uttering "I have no idea" was legitimately Courtney Cox forgetting her lines.
I agree. No way this was not scripted or at least not known by the cast they would show up. They didn't seemed surprised at all. Sure, Billy and Robin probably went off script a bit but surely it was rehearsed.
Matthew Perry is not on that list, he is funny, no question, but he's not up there with Billy Crystal, Leslie Nielsen, Jim Carrey and so on. It's like saying David Schwimmer is one of the best actors of all time, that's simply not true even though he is a very good actor. You kids really like to exaggerate everything, it's very strange. Stick to reality, it will help you in the long run.
Not only that, but they actually weren't hired to do this cameo at all. They happened to be in the building while they were taping for the show and decided to drop in unannounced. They just intruded on this scene and improv'd the whole thing in one take. You can tell the cast had no idea what was going on by their uncomfortable reactions and dead set attempt at going through with the scripted scene. Neither Billy nor Robin thought the show's producers were actually going to air the scene, they figured there'd be another take and what would air would be what was planned and this bit would end up in the gag reel or something, but because they managed to improv it so well in one go and the cast didn't break character, the producers just used it.
@@mallios13 Some of the things you've stated might be true, half-true or loosely based on true events. But I'll tell you one thing for sure - this was NOT taken in one shot. There are probably over 1,000 ways I can prove this to you, and that's without even mentioning the obvious cuts throughout the scene. But instead of trying to list all that proves that this was not done in one take - I'll provide only one, because there really is no need for more than that: Pause and take a look at 1:20 and then compare that frame to 1:35, notice how Ross's newspaper is suddenly unfolded and placed in a different spot? So yeah, this might have been half improvised or whatever - but it was certainly not done in one take.
The genuine look of confusion on the faces of the cast....PRICELESS!! Those 2 were best friends for a very long time and were both masters of improv that could play off of each other like few others can.
No planning, no script, no rehearsal, no retakes, no coaching or directing -- and these two guys still completely dominate the scene and still make the entire interaction absolutely hilarious. These two will always be legends.
You say that but the continuity on where JA head is from shot to shot says differently, @ 1:02 she's looking away but at 1:03 she's looking down & in the next shot her hair is behind her ear
I love the glance back by Crystal at the end. He carried the character through the scene. He is awesome. There are genius comedians in this scene that we miss, but he is one we joyfully still have with us.
When doing unscripted improv, sure. They used to kill doing Comic Relief. But this was a promo for Father's Day, which is the only movie they ever starred in together, and it was a huge flop.
Robin Williams & Billy Crystal appeared in an unscripted cameo at the beginning of an episode of "Friends". They just happened to be in the building where the show was shooting, and they improvised their entire scene. May 1997.
Such a treat for the live audience that were there that day. The extras were probably surprised and trying to keep there cool and not laughing to hard.
Funny enough. Robin and Billy just happened to be in the studio that day stumbling on the set by accident. So the writers asked them to film that quick cameo before the show started. It was just a funny coincidence that worked.
Weren't they filming their own movie "Fathers day" in the same studio on a different set? They definitely wandered onto the Friends set and were asked if they wanted to do a cameo, but they weren't at the studio on accident
@@timothycahalan1540the reason they looked puzzled is because it wasn't scripted..crystal and Williams were walking by the sound stage and decided to pop in as they were doing the scene, the director motioned to the cameraman to keep rolling.their scene was complete improv..notice LeBlanc reaction when he turned and saw them he looked towards where the director would be completely stunned as were the rest of the cast, they didn't know what 2 do..in fact they didn't even get a credits acknowledgement...
It was filmed with a studio audience, but not LIVE live. I’m sure they would have done more than one take, which would have been great since Robin would have done something different every time.
When you watch movies during comedy scenes I recommend you take a look and look at all of the people who are scratching their face. This is usually someone trying to hide a laugh you'll notice this happening quite a bit amongst the cast during this scene.
Not only did Robin and Billy improvise this scene, the main cast also had to improvise their reactions. Monica’s “I have no idea” was Courtney genuinely forgetting what she was supposed to say
Robin Williams was and always be a comic genius to me. Rest In Peace Robin and Matthew. Robin, my favorite comedian and Matthew, my favorite friend. ❤️❤️
I can’t believe they just happen to be there when they were filming this episode and all of this was improvised by them. I love that! Thanks for uploading!
With 2 comical GODS in this episode, I wonder how many "takes" it took to shoot this clip??? I'll bet it was more than 100 at least ✋️😂🤚 The blooper reel with Billy & Robin alone would fill up HOURS of film 😂😂😂
Wasabi & Kimchi ..... That is why Robin & Billy were absolute MASTERS at improv & Billy was always at his hilarious best when he was playing the straight man to Robins' wild antics which was demonstrated impeccably in this video ✋️😆👍 What they pulled off (gags & all) was PURE GENIUS & you simply can't write it as well as they did it 👏👏👏👏
Wasabi & Kimchi ..... What would've turned this into an immaculate sketch of improv perfection would've been if Whoopi Goldberg suddenly came in playing the part of Robin's wife..... Billy, Whoopi & Robin together doing anything was COMEDY GOLD 😂😂😂👍👍👍👍
Charmingboy .... Billy & Robin were consummate professionals & most probably did nail it in one take but imagine trying to keep a straight face while working alongside them??? IMPOSSIBLE !!! 😂😂😂
This episode of Friends (produced by Warner Bros.) aired the night of May 8, 1997. On May 9, 1997, the new movie Fathers' Day (produced by Warner Bros.), starring Robin Williams and Billy Crystal, opened in theaters from coast to coast. Corporate synergy at its finest!
I know you asked this a year ago but I'll answer now for ya.. they weren't supposed to be there at all, they were just in the building and decided to crash the set. This was all improv.
RIP Robin Williams (July 21, 1951 - August 11, 2014), aged 63 RIP James Michael Tyler (May 28, 1962 - October 24, 2021), aged 59 RIP Matthew Perry (August 19, 1969 - October 28, 2023), aged 54 You will be remembered as legends.
"... And you're no longer my friend!... WE ARE FINISH!... ¡NADA!... NO MORE!..." I love how he mix that spanish "¡NADA!" Between all. Robin Is one of the best in history. ❤
This was also a promotion for an upcoming fim they starred in together, Father's Day. They might have even been shooting the film that day, that's why they were in the same place at the same time.
I've seen Robin Williams live several times here in the SF area. Completely amazing every time and always improv. I believe it was unplanned and unscripted, he and Crystal were that good. That's just like him.
Apparently the scene, when it was recorded, is longer, and then they edited it for episode length purposes. If you look, there are many editing cuts. If that's what they showed us, I imagine the original recording was 20 times funnier even. 2 of the great legends of improsation. R.I.P. Robin.
