ROBINS AFB, GA | C-130J LANDING - 4K

Every couple years, our tails go through Depot Level maintenance. We drop them off at Robins AFB, GA. They get stripped down, checked, updated and then we fly out to pick up and put back to work. This round we picked up AMC's first C-130J with external fuel tanks. On top of that, it has our new paint scheme which removes all distinguishing markings except the US flag on the tail and a subdued roundel aft of the wings.
About the flight suits:
We are wearing two-piece Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP) Nomex Flight Suits. Same general cut and pattern as the single-piece green flight suits. Choice of which to wear is up to the individual. I personally find having pants and taking the top off while pushing pallets in hot and humid climates during an Engine Running Onload to be more comfortable. Less of a status uniform and more of a utility uniform. But it's all personal preference and many still prefer the old PJs. Gloves are nearby (my pocket) but not required in flight.

I noticed that too. In the airline world, non-operational flight deck comms are generally forbidden below 10,000 feet under the sterile cockpit rule. So the flight crew banter on Havoc 73 was noticeable. As an inveterate chatterbox, I approve and enjoyed the inside baseball. But the stan-eval purists may find fault.

So cool you guys mentioned the B-1s of the 128th BS, GA ANG. A friend flew the B-1s for the 128th and he would fly over our family farm regularly on VR-1055. It was an awesome sight to see then eventually I got an invite to hang out with 128th for a day at Robbins. Got a personal tour of the flight line and inside one of the B-1s. A day I'll never forget though it was a long, long time ago now. Great vid! Glad to see you posting again!

Appreciate what you and your fellow airmen do for our nation! So, as far as the pick-up...I am assuming that they have test crews there to certify the aircraft as FMC? Do you do a couple of circuits around the pattern to verify everything or do you just fly straight back to Dyess?

The 'unmarked look' is interesting. A former coworker related a story from his crew chief days, when they were changing tail feathers on his plane frequently. The plane often visited many bases / countries. In a few months, they couldn't maintain trim the plane was tail heavy. The plane had gained over 700 lbs, of paint, on the tail.

To my knowledge all the C-5As are at AMARG. Robins is the DEPOT for the C-5Bs(Ms now) and the 2 C-5Cs if they're still flying. I retired out of Robins from the unit that does the FCFs but the Js had not reached PDM time yet. FE anyway so no J time.

7:28 the new paint scheme means “devoid of all markings except the stars and stripes”, and for US Air Force lovers like me it’s a nuisance that the don’t have any visible ID anymore… By the way, those two C-5s are not trainers, they’re real C-5Ms.

I saw a informational video about a number of C-130's could be used for specials op's by making them a sea plane configuration by adding float under body fuselage. From the video it wouldn't be that big a thing as one might think and it could fill a nitch that really has been missing from air op's for many years.

Amazing what they've done with the C-130. I flew 1960's era C-130E's for 2700 hours at Pope and then Howard. I'm curious why the J model didn't have external fuel tanks from the beginning?
@ReachAviation
@ReachAviation Год назад
Without them the new engines were so efficient we could get the same range. It wasnt seen as needed for a tactical airframe unless we were transferring fuel like an MC or HC. Now that we are looking towards other threats, the extra range and the ability for a slick herk to have extra gas to give is a desired capability.

Eh. I believe the debate revolves around is the mission necessary for the cost of maintaining an older airframe.
@sipzter
@sipzter Год назад
@@ReachAviation Ah I understand. In line with that point - why did the governement never look at the various airframes parked in different desert spots outside of Tucson, Santa Clarita, etc.. a lot of them brand spanking new airliners that I suspect could have been purchased at a lesser cost; and could have been re-configured to work various missions - also at a lesser cost than going through an entire government purchase order scenario. They didn't need stealth. We just need (ed) working, safe and less costly upkeep. Why haven't our brilliant bean counters and aviation folks thought of this? I start to smell a whiff of corporate interests outweighing what you folks need. Sorry I went on a rant there. Thank you for your response.

Not just the angle, it was a long final. But for an approach, that was close to the book answer. If I had been on a visual, I would have driven in further. We did keep speed about 20-30 kts fast till short final to help but still long.

@@ReachAviation is this per USAF SOP? It's interesting how different it is from civilian that's all. I have my MEI and I never put the gear down until I will at the middle marker unless I was flying the Beech-18 (flew cargo) and on that plane I usually put the gear down at about 3 miles from the threshold because every time I flew I didn't know if the circuit breaker would pop and if I was by myself I'd definitely have by hand full pumping them down especially in IMC 😂 😂
