Well, the roof texture is pretty neat as it could be a way to increase performance instead of having an mesh or unions

please never use meshes or unions for roofs like that, it’ll destroy the game’s performance if you have a bunch of houses. pbr materials are a much more performant way to get roofs like this

@@1clarkI normally use unions or meshes for roof depending on the map size, if it is small map then I go full on details. I of course use an rendering script which would load and unload the unions/meshes and replace them with a part with texture depending on player distance from it.

the ceramic tiles are so cool cuz the white bits inbetween the tiles stay white no matter the color, couldnt really find any pbr materials or even textures for it before, rlly happy abt this

I would really like to see roblox implement custom materials. I'm working on a solo project with a huge open-world map. By far the biggest roadblock is the lack of materials. For example, I can't have different grass colors for different environments, making it look kind of one-dimensional. I have planned a couple of workarounds (using the ZoneModule to change the color of terrain materials when at different locations), but they're kind of cheap and don't solve the problem at issue. Really praying for this update! edit: I’m talking abt terrain.

Might be alone on this one but I find it strange how they update these materials now after being able to upload your own PBR materials, if you wanted a cardboard material you could already made your own or look for a free open source texture and use that. To me this only incentivizes games that all look the same.

It's a thing mostly about new developers, not everyone is going to understand PBR and how they work, same with licensing. The default material options are going to be a go-to for most people because they don't have to go through the process of adding your own materials. And imo games on Roblox already look the same, so it's good that they're adding new materials for more versatility.

Since these are local materials stored inside roblox's files, they would load faster. Uploading your own materials and textures would take longer to load in because they aren't inside roblox's files and would have to be downloaded. Using the default materials is just better for preformance and loading times because in game development, preformance is the main priority. You can still use custom materials textures just not too much.
