Presenting Robocop! And Frank Miller! And other awesome Robocop comics! Robocop has some amazingly good comics, especially the Vs Terminator and Frank Miller stuff. So, we talk about them, and Frank Miller
+Yiorgios Vazouras Agreed! I think there's still some potential there, but it will be hard to justify it from a publisher's pov without another movie in production. I think it's hard for Robocop it live outside the late 80's, crime-laden, pre-crack epidemic era that it came out of. So it either needs to live there still and embrace the tone of that period, or needs to move somewhere new in terms of its satire. The idea of drone warfare in the remake would have been interesting territory, but it had no balls. No humor. It treated the whole thing with kid gloves. The balancing of comic book humor and sincerity is key.
Ughhh such a great video! Found the channel because I picked up the robocop omnibus & robocop be terminator….liked and subscribed! I’ll be back (that was totally unintentional)
This is freaking amazing !!! I love ur vids and I miss y'all so much, I hope ur doin well. My favorite frank miller comic and comic in general is sin city, its so freaking badass. What's ur favorite Frank miller book ?
My favourite part of the RvsT books were the moments of Alex grasping with/for his humanity. Also, probably the best part of RoboCop 2 in terms of character. Frank got Murphy better than any other comic writer I've seen try to tackle it. I fell off the Dynamite books hard when the Old Man's estranged brother was a crime lord. Every book I've picked up by them since has left a bitter taste in my mouth.
I own two of the three graphic novels that were based around Frank's original script for Robocop 3 and all i can say is that it is far superior to what we got in the 3rd film honestly had that movie been made Peter Weller would have agreed for a third movie.
I can agree RVT is a good crossover and is one of only three of the best crossovers THREE CROSSOVERS the other ones are King Kong very Godzilla and of course AVP
Batman goes to the love tunnel to pop his murder cherry with joker, cant perform and Joker finishes himself iff leaving Batman spitting on his face. Yup the humor isthere
Ah shit I should have said "have you read it yet" since its batshit and idk wtf miller was trying to accomplish with it. I'd say that and dk2 are his worst batman wtf works
Avatar is like any other exploitative publisher or studio, there's a lot of exploitation for it's own sake, but that doesn't mean that good stuff can't come out of it. If that was true, we would have to throw out entire genres.
Now That Boom studio is Doing Crossovers with DC the should do a Robocop/Cyborg crossover. cyborg would get Scared for life if it Frank Miller's Robocop.
The audience viewing Frank Miller falls into 3 categories 1) (most) loved him... then realized that he was scum 2) worshipped him and still love him to this day 3) always recognized what a waste of humanity he was and never understood any praise he got I'm definitely in the 3rd category
+tahna dana I'm not interested in defending Holy Terror. It's a book that bothered me when I read it, and I don't know that I will revisit it, but I don't think you need to agree with his politics to recognize that he knows what the hell he's doing as an artist. I recommend reading Julian Darius's in depth essays on Miller over at Sequart.
+tahna dana Moore is still putting out good work. You should read his Avatar stuff lately. Crossed Plus 100 and Providence will remind you why he's a master.
Alpha Rookie his quote " It’s not the job of the artist to give the audience what the audience wants. If the audience knew what they needed, then they wouldn’t be the audience. They would be the artists. It is the job of artists to give the audience what they need. " really gets me..it is how i view any kind of media i think
Big Guy and Rusty the Robot! The artist is Geof Darrow. Frank Miller worked with him on Hard Boiled as well. Amazing artist that uses lots of detail. Shaolin Cowboy is great also.
I bought Dark Knight Strikes again out of curiosity. I've heard it's fucking awful but it sounds hilarious. Also I bought it just so I could read DKIII
I did not like the Avatar Robocop at all. Felt really bland to me and not enough dialogue. Robocop vs Terminator he did was a super fun read. They meshed it well and a lot of artists I find can't pencil Robo all too well but Simonson did a good job.
Frank miller has gotten bad is recent years since he made the sequal to the dark knight returns, racist , homophobic and sexist, not to say his past works are bad Robocop versus terminator , 300 , the dark knight returns , and my favorite ronin are all good works he like the comic industry has his three ages the late 80s was his golden age , the 90s are his silver age , and the 2000s onward is his terrible bronze age
Alpha Rookie the basis of truth by which someone is judged comes down to this I can make sense of his current work , but the problem is he's gotten bad as a writer as a artist he has his own style , but he is racist and he has made several racist comments, as well as his works are in recent years are not great I enjoyed a few small things of his recent works, but what he's become just baffles me , but then when you think about how he came to be this way I look at 911 as he was living in New York at the time and it attributed to his current self there are plenty of other things that contribute to this as well and i agree with linkara that he wants to bang a building . but I hope Frank miller is remembered for his previous work as holy terror is racist and terrible .
It's interesting that you include 300 as one of his "good works" in the context of him being racist since that book in a lot of ways could be considered one of his most flagrantly racist books.
Alpha Rookie I know but here's my reason , in comparison to holy terror , it's like comparing a unloaded shotgun in a safe, to a loaded shotgun pointed at your face one is clearly more hostile than the other . also I breezed through it and didn't learn of the racism till reading it a second time it's enjoyable in a way , it's my least favorite , holy terror is far more offensive and blatant
Right but per your gun analogy, you could say 300 is more dangerous simply because it is not overtly political. Like a toy gun that familiarizes you with the concept of shooting people. Whereas Holy Terror was created specifically to be propaganda. It is literally created with propaganda as a genre in mind, as that Sequart article mentions. The cover itself very obviously riffing on Captain America punching out Hitler. I don't believe Miller made Holy Terror out of a sincere catharsis so radical it COMES OFF like propaganda. I think he was consciously creating propaganda. Now the decision to make propaganda LIKE that? I don't know but I have trouble reading it.
