‘GIVE THE MAN A HAND’✋after blowing his hand off.That scene,then Murphy getting his arm blown off are shocking.Those scenes are still included in Robocop when it’s televised today,which is surprising with the way the film censors were and are.You can see how shocked the girls are with the way Murphy is brutally treated.

Director Paul Verhoeven is why this movie is as good as it is. He made three great scifi movies full of satire with social/political themes just below the surface. Robocop, Total Recall and Starship Troopers are a kind of unofficial trilogy. You should definitely react to all three.

actually, the satire pretty much came from the writers neumeier and miner.... according to verhoeven, he threw the script in the trash after just reading the title, but his wife fished it out, read it and told him there is way more to the story than the title might suggest, so he read it too and had to agree with her.... neumeier is also the one who wrote the script to starship troopers.... yes, verhoeven is a great director, but don't forget the contributions of others that were also needed to make his projects turn out this good

@@stefanforrer2573 In filmmaking it is never the directors sole achievement. But the director is the one (usually, there are exceptions) that brings everyone's contribution together as a whole. That is how cinema works. When people praise a director as the one responsible for a movie, they are not forgetting the writers, photographers, art directors, actors, editors, musicians, sound designers, mixers, second units etc etc... that made the movie good. It is understood that cinema is a collaborative effort with a unifying mind in charge.

One reason, why older generations today are frustrated with how things are going downhill in so many ways. The "problems" of today were already addressed in the 1960's through the very early 2000's. The powers that be & their cohorts in the media recreate or pretend the old problems were never even addressed, much less solved in the past, when they were both addressed & for the most part solved, if not altogether solved.

Todays screenwriters could if they also had an ounce of talent. Sadly in general they don't and choose to demonstrate their political activism instead. Its why the recent main film releases have all made large losses. Robocop (original only) was a great film.

Fun Fact- When Emil was burned and disfigured by the toxic waste, his appearance was kept secret from the rest of the cast. When he approaches Leon Nash begging for help, actor Ray Wise was legitimately freaked out and his scream was genuine. He thought someone had snuck onto the set and tried to attack him.

Wow. I saw this movie in the theater with my older bro and my Pops, at the nature age of 9 lol, and 36 years, in my top 3 fav movies all time, I did not know this. I hope Mr. Wise was comforted with a properly executed business hug, or better yet, the Power Embrace* Hed need that comforting if he had no idea that THAT was part of the shoot * -- ok I get that those references MIGHT be a deep cut for some, so just look up Ray Wise Tim and Eric.... then you'll be part of the initiated like Bruce and Bane

That is really what raises it to another level. It’s not a revenge story, it’s about him struggling to regain the humanity that was stolen from him. As the movie progresses his voice becomes less robotic, the mask comes off to reveal his face, and finally the climax: he is no longer Robocop, he is Murphy. The title really makes you think of cheesy sci-fi action flick, but it embodies the greatest power of sci-fi. Providing a lens through which we examine ourselves and our society.

The fact that Peter Weller with barely a face showing, and with body language alone was able to deliver such an emotional and tragic moment for the "Home Scene" will continue to draw an emotional felling from me to this day. Incredible. I love it every time.

I saw this in 87 at age 7 and the Toxic Waste man traumatized me for life. Between this and Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Fly and The Blob, fear of your flesh melting off was a real thing for kids in the 80s.

Except the only other movie that traumatized me like RoboCop was Temple of Doom XD @AndreaBorto as long as there wasn't sex or nudity, I pretty much got to watch whatever I wanted when I was a kid, the 80s was definitely a different time. My dad didn't help any either cause he was an action movie junky so I watched so many movies with him when I was a kid that I probably shouldn't have hahahaha great times though :)

One of the best lines in this movie, and you guys didn’t show it. The part where Murphy and Louis were talking about Murphy’s family. “I can feel them, but I can’t remember them.” Peter Weller delivered that line in such a way, that you understood that the RoboCop was having difficulty showing surface emotion, Alex Murphy held such depth of feeling.

Little factoid about this film: They started filming this in Dallas, but the were asked to leave after the gas station explosion. I don't know if you noticed, but it seemed bigger than you might have expected. Anyway, they guy that oversaw the explosives on set set up way too much and when they blew it up on the night, windows in cars, houses and apartments for like 5-6 square blocks all busted from the shock wave that came off. Dallas politely asked them to continue their production in another city.

Welcome to ‘80s movies, ladies, where R-rated truly means R-rated! Today’s PG and R-rated films just really don’t compare.. 😂 Edit: Acknowledgement that yes, the below commenters are right: this isn't even the R-rated version they're watching but the full, unrated cut. (I do think the R-rated cut we saw as kids implied enough, but it is always juiciest to get the full details, which I think is closer to what the director had intended.)

They actually cut something like 10 seconds from the film to keep the R rating. They wanted to give it an X rating until they cut down a little off the Ed 209 shooting in the boardroom and Murphy getting shot. When they made the Criterion remaster for VHS the footage was put back in. This is a Criterion version.

This is the unrated version not the R rated. They rated had to cut a few seconds when ED-209 shot the board member. And certain scenes when Murphy is killed killed is not as graphic in the R version.

14:59 Paul Verhoeven is Dutch, and his director of photography for the scene, Jost Vacano, is German, so they didn't realize how offensive a pejorative b*+ch is in English, so they kept referring to and addressing the two actresses as "b*+ches" while directing the scene. The actresses took it in stride, and Kurtwood Smith and Miguel Ferrer (Clarence and Bob) kept cracking up.

Starship Troopers is also amazing. I can't believe it bombed at the box office. Its special effects out did anything on "Titanic" (which is also great). Both were nominated for the Visual FX at the academy awards in 1998.

Peter Weller, despite being under tons of make up deliver a fine performance and Ronny Cox and kurtwood Smith were great as the baddies. Only Nancy Allen's role could've been a bit deeper. Not to be Murphy's love interest, but being true friend. Robocop is still one of my all time favorite movies, up there with "The Godfather", "Jacob's Ladder", "Star Wars", "Schindler's List" and "Raiders of the lost Ark". Yep, it is THAT good!

Robocop is one of those classics from the 80s that has continued to age supremely well. It still holds up as a solid, well-written and executed action flick. But more than that, its satire and commentary on both the power and influence of corporate greed on human life after death as well as how easily corruptible and fallible American law enforcement can be is both hilariously and terrifyingly relevant to a lot of stuff going on right now.

Most of the film was shot in Dallas, Texas. I used to live close by and would often see many of the filming locations during commute. I've also been to Las Colinas Studios in Irving, Texas on a few occasions where some of the film was shot. They give tours of the facility and you can see one of the Robocop stand-in props. The suit looks even better in person and close up.

I saw this in 1989 on VHS when I was only 7 years old :D Turned me into a cineaste and opened my eyes to movies beyond Superman and Charlie And The Chocolate Factory. From then on, while all my friends were still watching Mary Poppins and TMNT cartoons, I was watching Predator, Alien, Aliens, The Thing. RoboCop is a seminal movie, and to this day remains my interchangeable #1 and #2 movie alongside Jurassic Park. I've written thesis on RoboCop. Amazing movie.

So unique. Every character is alive and full of energy despite or because of the chaos around them, ironically including the cyborg. The subtext of that boardroom is that the CEO is in a power struggle with Dick Jones, and may have rigged the ED-209 demonstration to fail. Likewise Jones and Morton end up in a power struggle, but Jones wins that one. When the CEO fires Jones, it's not because he cares what Jones did, he just wants to eliminate a competitor. Also, the reason the guy at the end gives Robocop a thumbs up for shooting Jones is that he's now #2 in the company. And the CEO can be smug because he effectively owns Robocop. OCP is a nest of snakes, but they're all enjoying being evil, and it's mesmerizing to watch.

Fun fact, a lot of the subtext that you noticed was sort of in there in the original script, but the Director Paul Verhoeven hammered it home in his rewrites of the movie. He was big on social messages of the day without being preachy about it. Always entertainment first, and if you're looking for it, a bit more to it to please heavy thinkers. All of his movies are like that no matter the era or genre. I have seen at least two of movies all the way through, Robocop being the one I currently own on DVD. Got the directors cut in a steel case.

Back in the day when this movie first hit the theaters the special effects were awesome. We look at it now and it's incredible how far we've come. Back then they had never dreamed of CGI. Less than 10 years later they made Jurasic Park. You can see how far we've come in 40 years.

And honestly the effects are still pretty good. Stop motion was *perfect* for ED-209. I’ve seen a video where a guy smoothed out ED-209’s motion, and honestly it looks so much better with the slightly jerky movements.

F##ked up the way he went out, in my opinion one of the most horrific deaths I've seen happen to a star in a film they starred in. Graphic as hell too, they did a hell of a job making you feel the shock and emotion of having to witness that scene. Great reaction all the way thru ladies, by the looks on your faces you could tell you both were really into the movie. This was an excellent 80's kick-ass, action/sci-fi masterpiece. Skip the sequels thou, they don't live up to the original and will let you down.

It's worth clarifying that in a Laissez Faire Capitalist system, Government has the sole job of protecting individual rights, as society's agent of retaliatory force. Corporations would not be any part of delivering or managing police, armed forces, courts or prisons. The situation found in Robocop is more akin to an anarchist system, with competing private police forces acting within the same jurisdiction.

Remember watching the directors cut for the first time, around 10 years old. It changed my life! Absolute masterpiece. Also, fun fact. The gas station explosion scene, actually had a stunt man in the suit when the whole set went up. It was 100% real.

Just out of curiosity I looked up the reason why Dick is short for Richard. Apparently it started in the Middle Ages. Back then, people were quite fond of using rhyming names. And so Richard = Rick = Dick. Same went for Bill (William, Will) and Bob (Robert, Rob). Also it seems that the association between the word Dick and male genitalia wasn't common until much later, in the 16th century. I'm always fascinated by phrase/word origins like that. ^_^

Peter Weller really did amazing acting with the movements as robocop. I remember how that was so new thing and people were imitating the robocop moves for decade. The interviews where he and director tell about Peter's practicing and adapting his vision of the moves took long time. But he completely nailed it. The scenes where robocop takes damage, gets hit etc, he just moves so believable manner that you attach to those moments. While he is a robotic, his strength is still limited, where mass and other physical properties are in many scenes adapted to make it really believable. All the small details, like when he is fixing his own leg, or taking his helmet off, making the turns in server room etc. They are just best. Like look at the difference between Terminator 1 and Robocop, when both are first time seen firing a gun. In the Terminator 1 the Arnold blinks on moment of firing and the gun recoil moves the hand, that shouldn't happen. In the Robocop at the shooting range 09:00 where the gun barely moves at all from the recoil as the robocop can hold it so stable. The movie is so full of fine made details that really implant the coolness to the kids minds forever, and I don't talk about the violence parts, but just alone about the Sci-Fi parts.

For a long time I also wondered why Robo leaves the convenience store without arresting the bad guy, but in further viewings I noticed that the wife pushes the panic button first... in fact I kinda think that's what alerted Robo that a crime was occurring there. In any event, the cops responding to the alarm would likely be there very soon afterwards.

He does not Arrest dead suspects, IE the store robber, the city hall Terrorists who wants to kill the Mayor, the Rapist who lost his tool. Lethal force was justified by his Program for those instances. He Arrested the guy at the Night club. He Arrested Emeal after the Gas station explosion and bike crash because he was still a Live. And he Arrest Clarence after he is reminded of his sworn duty and his Program kicks into Arrest Mode.

This is my all-time favorite movie, it's a tight 90 minutes with no wasted frames. And can be a surface level action movie, or you can look deeper and see so many layers to it. I truly, truly love this movie.

This is one reason, why older generations today are frustrated with how things are going downhill in so many ways. The "problems" of today were already addressed in the 1960's through the very early 2000's. The powers that be & their cohorts in the media recreate or pretend the old problems were never even addressed, much less solved in the past, when they were both addressed & for the most part solved, if not altogether solved.

It fell down the stairs because they werent looking to build the best machine to eradicate crime, Dick said he had contracts for military spare parts for the next 10 years. They didnt care if it worked or not. Robocop project was built around the ideal upstanding moral officer that the corporations werent able to corrupt his spirit, which stayed alive in the machine.

They tried remaking this with modern CGI technology and it lacked the heart and soul. The NEW version acts and looks like a man wearing a helmet and body armor whereas the OLD Robocop looks like a machine with the soul of a man trapped inside. The best part of the new Robocop was Michael Keaton....but most movies could use a little Keaton: he took the weird "Vulture" villain from Spiderman and turned him into a 3 dimensional character. I would NOT recommend the remake.

I actually liked Samuel Jackson's cartoonish show host. He was a callback to Verhoeven's satirical tv world in 'Robocop'. But, yeah, other than Keaton and Jackson, 2014 Robo was lifeless. You nailed the difference between the two films. We don't see Weller's face again until he's regained some agency about himself. Which makes his final "Murphy" answer an actual heartfelt statement to us, as well as him. Whereas in 2014 Robo, we never lose sight of Kinneman, or his family for that matter. What he's actually lost doesn't hold the same weight as Verhoeven's classic.

If my cell phone says "Dad" is calling and I answer, I dont want the caller to be Verizon trying to get me to change my cell phone plan. It's a trick. The Lion King is a remake of Shakespeare's Hamlet. They didnt call it "Hamlet" and try to be different. They called it "Lion King," and tried to be the same. Then we judge the movie without being tricked.

The mid-1980s was the tail-end of the Slasher movie genre so a lot of the violence was gratuitous and gory to a shocking level that a lot of people today won't be comfortable with. I remember reading about how Robocop was almost rated X meaning that it was above R which it got only after being edited 10 times to trim down on the excessive violence.

I love watching people react to Robocop for the first time! Paul Verhoeven always does an excellent job blending Social Commentary and Sci-Fi elements. There have been a couple sequels to this, 2 TV series (Live Action and Animation), a 2001 TV Miniseries and the 2014 reboot.

Fun fact: Director, Paul Verhoeven had a lot of disagreements with the effects head, Rob Bottin when it came to how some of the effects scenes were shot. They had a massive argument about the face reveal scene where Bottin wanted it to be shot in a darker environment while Verhoeven insisted it would look good. They wouldn't speak to each other until the premiere and saw how good it looked and became good friends. So much so that Verhoeven got Bottin to work on Total Recall

The scènes where they killed Murphy were deleted. Only on a few places you could rent this version of the movie. Glad you are watching these classics

I hate when governments feel they must censor entertainment from adults as if they were children. Adults are not children. Governments are not the Parents. It makes sense to censor disturbing material to protect children. Adults should do fine with a 'not for younger or more sensitive viewers' disclaimer.

You’re absolutely right about old movies. Movies used to have finesse. Now a lot of them just beat you over the head with their message and completely fail at it. Verhoeven is pretty good about delivering an entertaining movie first, but then if you look you can see there’s a lot more beneath the surface. Starship Troopers does the same thing.
