4th annual Robot Wars - Heavyweight division Jamie Hyneman and the rest of the M5 Industries team face off against one of the better built robots of the time...the 2nd version of Punjar
quelorepario No full body spinner is a Blendo rip off. They are just full body spinners like Blendo and Blendo is an inspiration to make full body spinners like Ziggo and Megabyte.
quelorepario blendo was the first (proper) full body, but not the first spinner, that title goes to.... mauler, yeah mauler came from the original event, and i believe blendo came second though it wasnt inspired by mauler at all. Theres also horizontals and verticle spinners, spinners are very different and are a very versitile class of bot.
@tzyinccom I agree, Blendo lives up to Jamie's motto of "More grunt, less elegance." At heart, it's an upside-down wok with a motor in, but it's a very violent upside-down wok with a motor in, and so it does its job of transferring arseloads of kinetic energy very well. Makes you wonder what Jamie and Adam would build these days.
The guy who drove Punjar figured that his only chance to win was to hit Belndo so hard it stopped moving. So, his strategy was to charge straight in and hope that most of the collision force got transferred to Belndo.
Blendo is very... Jamie. Simple, yet effective. I'm pretty certain this robot was the first of its kind to be so effective and revolutionized robot wars, such that many copycats of this design kept appearing
This wok is very appropriate, it uses the same principle as martial arts such as judo, kung fu andaikido: use your opponent's energy against themselves. Beautifully simple and elegant.
@@jfmc2581 From Adam himself. He talks about it starting at 18:19 in the following video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_ykZrkanexM.html
Lol, in one of the forum panels, they mentioned that they were planning to do a 20,000rpm robot; which would move at mach 5..although they found it wasn't going to be as controllable or safe so they made this 500rpm blendo version instead. Though, I wonder what blendo would've been like had they made a 20,000rpm spinning hemisphere, it would probably make shreds piercing through the arena walls.
@MrCinimod93 Blendo didn't get to win when it first debuted because it was launching pieces of the enemy boys infer the walls of the area. Caused it to have to take co-champion.
I can make this robot even more terrifying: Blendo was originally intended early on in the design process to rotate at 30,000RPM, something the engineering team was completely capable of (flywheel designs are awesome) and would have made it much more maneuverable. about the speed of a dental drill before a physicist was consulted who informed them the outermost surfaces would encounter so much atmospheric fricton that they would create plasma and erode their metal surfaces like a spacecraft re-entering the atmosphere. So it would have looked like a glowing blue ring, or a lightsaber. Before it burned up in a fraction of a second. (unless they had like titanium or Inconel blades, which might last 5-8 seconds) The speed was reduced to 400 RPM as a result.
@ScorpiaX All things being equal, it's probably better that they settled for 500 rpm. If Blendo scored a very direct hit going at something approaching 20 times its original speed, both robots would probably not survive the impact. The target would be destroyed, oh, sure, but Blendo would feel so much energy in turn that it would probably break the whole robot after the first attack.
@ParamaxFilmings They also offered Co-Champion for his withdrawal...they actually had to raise the shielding and Blendo still managed to damage it...imagine sitting at a robot slaughterfest and some piece of robot weaponry launches through the shield into your body...not very pleasent.
Actually, I don't think Grant and Jamie ever worked together in Robot Wars - Jamie had Blendo in the heavyweight division, and Grant had Deadblow in a lower division. I'd have to agree that Blendo supports the hypothesis that Jamie is an evil genius, though.
discovery is bringing a new robot battle show called robogeddon, The network has announced that James Cameron and Mark Burnett will create "Robogeddon," a series in which robots fight to mechanical death. there is a chance blendo could come back since why would you not have MI5 involved in such a show.
@tzyinccom Yes, the 'full body spinner' type. Sadly, they do not go well against each other. Their loss in 'Battlebots' comes from the reson that they did not improve this spinning cookware of doom.
its a good theory, honestly, but doesn't apply to what this was. the only way that would apply, would be if the other robot grabbed blendo's blade as it was in motion and threw it. This was just a trial brute force.
@subtlewhatssubtle Yeah, well, only overseeing the aking of industrial diamonds formed by crushed chemicals in a 5000-pounds-of-high-explosives explosion...
it was meant to be a joke of coerce flying mettle is dangerous but how the hell could blendo send a sledgehammer into the crowd of people or wer you making a death threat
Honestly IDK why it was disqualified in 1995 & 1997... The arena walls must have sucked. Blendo sucks complated to most other spinners from nowadays, It kills bots with 1 hit but they just fly like 10cm? Thats not dangerous at all. Its not that Blendo was too powerful, Its that the arena sucked.
He's pretty much one of the first people to utilize the tactic of ramming head on into a spinner. Alas, luck and durability was not on his side. He did get his revenge two years later in Las Vegas 99 though.
