The difference between this and the lack less new series and the original run is really clear here. The energy from Craig Charles, quicker interviews and intense background music really keep the tempo of the show up all the way through. The new improved robots of S8-S10 plus the presentation of the older series would’ve been a great combination.
The first episode we get a full glimpse of JP's dementia setting in. Diotior got to the semi-finals of the First World Championship, they didn't go out first round, and Firestorm and Tornado were never in it! No mention of the return of Philliper from the promising Depoppasaurus Rex team either. What could have been! Panzer out-tornadoed Tornado, a feat not to be redone until Storm 2. As for Drillzilla, it's a robot I rather like, but it's understandable there's ambivalent feelings to it - it was our equivalent of Son of Whyachi, before people realised Shufflebots were a cheesy way to stuff armour and weaponry into a lower weight class. But hell, it was legal at the time, I'm not losing any sleep over it. Good win from Razer - normally I'm not particularly positive towards them, but that was fully deserved. Excellent control and style, when they realised they didn't have the ability to crush through that armour. Fascinating though that in 10 years, it went from needing a robot bending the rules to be twice the weight limit for twice the armour to be able to resist a crusher like that, and yet in S8, Kill-e-Crank-e managed to stand up to it. Hydraulics really did have their day, and today is not it.
I wonder what happened to Philipper. Them and Diotor were the only non-US/UK bots to do much, with Philipper even taking out the daunting Panzer and surviving to a close JD against Tornado.
What a shame that Panzer got flipped over. They were all over Tornado and considering that this was during a time they were nearly unstoppable makes it even more impressive. But it just shows how important Srimech's are.
Drillzilla only got as far as it did because it found a loophole. If technically classified as a walker the robot used to be permitted to enter the tournament with a higher weight limit. This allowed it better motors and armor than other robots had of the same weight class. But that weight limit was intended to be there to compensate for the lower speed and maneuverability REAL walker robots lack. Quoted from the Robot Wars wiki: -------------- Drillzilla was somewhat unpopular in the pits due to its shufflebot design, which many thought to be bending the rules as the design gave it the weight advantage of a walkerbot but much better speed and pushing power than regular walkers usually enjoy. "I did dislike 'Drillzilla' (AKA 'The Ugly Vibrating Brick'), but not because they beat us. I was convinced - correctly, I think - that their shufflebot design was not good for the sport. The rulemakers agreed..." - Aaron Joerger Shortly after Extreme Warriors was filmed, an amendment that affected Drillzilla was made to the walkerbot rules. It stated that a robot using a camshaft to "shuffle" as a means of locomotion no longer constituted walking. Shufflebots like Drillzilla were now limited to one-and-half times the normal weight limit.
@@jedg9309 It's been 2 years since that post. I'm a bit out of the loop at this point. I only vaguely remember there was a good bit about each bot n the wiki. You could possibly find what you want to know there.
I'm not so sure about that, though. Yes, Mastiff self-righted, but at that point it was also knocked against by Chaos 2 to where the former was propped up a bit. The question is - would Mastiff have self-righted if it was laid out completely flat on its wedge?
So, guys, with Extreme done, it's time for our next series. Series 5 is the logical step, but if there's enough demand for something else - say, Extreme 2, because of the quality, then I'll do that; but as always, it's your choice in the main!
The 5th Wars are the most sensible next choice, since the current available footage of it is in much lower quality compared to the footage of the other seasons (at least the last I remember).
They should've also aired the U.S. Championship and War of Independence from Extreme Warriors. Jonathan Pearce would've gone nuts seeing all the carnage in the U.S. Championship.
Whats very interesting here is that Jonathan Pearce accidentally gives spoilers out... See he announces incorrect statistics about some robots, for instance that Firestorm and Tornado competed in the previous world championship and that Diotoir, Chaos 2 and Firestorm lost in the first round whilst Tornado was beaten in the Semis by Razer. All incorrect... for the first world championship. See the commentary is done post battle, it isn't live. The notes he has are actually about THIS world championship. Oops John, you just revealed the results. On another note the 4 British entrants were the All Stars Semi Finalists, must have been how they decided it. And looking at the damage to Firestorm it appears to have been filmed post Series 5. Also the weight differences of all the bots is comical, what a mess.
On the season 1 finale of Robot wars Extreme Warriors, it's the same 2nd world championship episode just like the UK Robot wars, but except the scenes are extended.
1) The producers had limited options as to the robots they could include from other countries. Although Robot Wars was being shown around the world at the time, many countries, such as Italy, had only just started building robots. 2) Robots aren't just picked because they are strong fighters. The producers were also looking for robots with unusual designs, and/or robots that made good cannon fodder. Examples of this include Grannie's Revenge and The Tartan Terror. W70 looked unusual, and was unique in that it was built from a pool cleaner.
You are asking how Whirlpool 70 qualified when it was a bot that at least functioned as far as movement went, and not Yeberobo, who did literally nothing the entire match.
It echoes throughout the entire episode. Maybe they were trying to make his voice sound more dramatic like its reverberating around the arena but it comes across as an error.
@@Votesaxon07Reviews that’s exactly what I thought, it sounds as if they were rushing to get his commentary in as this same episode was aired in America with the American commentary. That’s my theory anyway…
6:18: Oh George what are you doing?! 15:04: Whoaw, the Firestorm team throwing that shade on Chaos 2. Brutal! 18:31: Razer. Weapons: Hydraulic Ram & Scoop. Um.... I think someone made an error when writting these. 20:41: Damn, that fight ended before they could use the floor flipper (and you know they wanted to) 31:55: Nice to see an honest fight between Razer & Tornado for a change....
So now that I've watched the UK and US versions, which one is the best? The UK version does has Jonathan, Craig and its in 16:9 widescreen. The US version has Mick and more footage of fights that were cut from the original.
So the Revolutionist is the original ancestor of Captain Shrederator? Shame they hesitated, really. If they'd had the sense to start spinning as soon as activate was called, they might have been able to fend off Razer (the teeth may be small, but at 180mph max tip speed this was by far the fastest spinner in original RW)
Yeah, that slow spin up time is what killed them. The fact that Razer went immediately for them and didn't let up until they were out was enough to show that the Revolutionist was the only bot they even considered a threat. Not that that was a particularly difficult feat in that heat.
After the garbage tier entries like 'Ghettobot' in the first world championship I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the American teams in this video. It's even more impressive when you consider that Battlebots exclusive contracts were a thing at this time. I don't think these teams were as good as the top tier of Battlebots, but all four were solid entries that made the UK bots earn their victories.
Honestly, I wish in hindsight that Razer didn't return. I was initially excited to see it back and was shocked to see it embarrassingly fall out of the competition in the first televised Robot Wars battle in over 12 years, but what chance would it have had against Carbide? Sure, Razer had an anti-spinner wedge, but I doubt even that would've been enough to prevent being violently chopped apart and getting scrapped. Look at Ian Lewis' reaction to what damage Pussycat inflicted on Razer - how do you think he would've dealt with what Carbide would've most likely done? It's not like Razer would've been able to cause much damage anymore anyway, with the standards of armour and construction by 2016.
6:21 Quite the Shock Moment that but What we UK Viewers Didn't see shortly afterwards (it's seen in the US Extreme Warriors Version), George Francis can clearly be seen Shouting "NO WAY!" as Chaos 2 landed in the pit & Out of the Tournament.
Top 5 1. Razer 2. Chaos 2 3. Tornado 4. Firestorm 5. Bigger brother Razer because they won the 5th wars and both world championships Chaos2 Impressive wins in The 3rd And 4th Wars And Very good flipper Tornado Beated razer in the 6th Wars And went from seed 12 to NO.1 Firestorm Managed to get to the grand Final twice but never got the title but Epic robot never to be forgotten Bigger brother 3 things 1. Beated Uk holders Chaos 2 2. Beated hypno disc in The Grand Final in the 5th Wars 3. DOWN RIGHT AMAZING
Its amazing the things that Jonathon misses like S3 is against Mousetrap. He actually thinks the rub spring the S3 tears off runs the weapon, not the chain you can clearly see on the hinge.
gdi philliper, Panzer MK2 was all over tornado and wouldve probably won the battle if you hadnt fking flipped them over not like they wouldve beat razer anyway
A bot with no means to self right itself and no means to effectively discourage flipping tactics in this competition is just begging to be flipped over for an easy win. Like seriously the creators of Panzer equipped their bot with a flipping mechanism but they never bothered to think that their bot might be flipped as well ? >.>
ZinXlX It did have one, but got jammed up from tornado's ramming. The only reason they lost was because flipper got a cheap shot while it was facing tornado. I'm sure if panzer had faced flipper he could have beaten it with the pushing power.
Panzer mk. 2 was actually a pretty cool robot - but the lack of self righting and bad luck with Filliper randomly trundling over there and flipping them put them out. Quite unfortunate, I hate tornado
Really not sure I can agree with you there, especially towards the end it looked like it was all DZ. They were more aggressive, though I reckon Graham Bone out did them on driving skill. Yes, Firestorm got the KO on the other two machines but by that measure, Philliper should have won the fourth melee - it was the one to kill Panzer, who would have dominated Tornado if it was one-on-one.
Looking back at it, I don't even agree with Firestorm being one of the UK representatives in this, as great as the robot is. Look at the others; obviously Razer was going to be a UK representative as the reigning World Champion, and so was Chaos 2 as the reigning UK Champion. And Tornado made sense being that it was a rising star as the previous winner of the Best Newcomer Award, and especially with how dominant it was with the two Challenge Belts in Extreme. But what did Firestorm accomplish prior to match up with that? I would've had Pussycat in its place, since Pussycat had won the Celebrity Championship in Series 4, the War of Independence in Extreme Warriors Series 1 (additionally when all other UK robots lost in the first round to the Americans), the Tag Team Championship with Díotóir and one of the Annihilators in Extreme, and was the one robot to decisively _beat_ Razer by this point. Then again, it doesn't look that bad considering that Firestorm beat _Pussycat_ when facing it one on one in Series 5.
What a shame. It's the same one they showed in US, but with different interviews. That must have been kind of annoying either having to ship everyone to two different places only to compete in an event that took place in one, or have the hosts from one move to the other to do their own interviews. Also, I love how the owners of Flensberger Power talks a big game about "no one gets through" in the US version, but in this version, they're clearly more concerned.
This is one of the reasons i don't like philper it flipped pantzer Yet a couple of times it knocked a better strong robot just to get dominated the rest of the fight...
