I'm a public school teacher in the Bronx. Robyn Hitchcock consented to play at my school for free! I have video of him performing Pink Floyd's "Bike" that I really ought to post at some point. Truly a generous and complete gentleman. I'm honored to have hosted him.
Fun fact, My dad gave Robyn that Man with a Lightbulb Head figurine at an Arizona Concert. We had gotten it a few years prior as a kids meal toy from Arby's (may have been Wendy's) and kept it on the off chance that somebody might meet him. According to my dad, his only response was "What batteries does it take?"
I have been a fan of Robyn's for years, and only just got to see him play live on October 13th of this year in Chicago. I had been out of surgery for only about 2 weeks when I went to see him, and it was worth every horrible bone-jangling minute of the awful train and bus-ride to get there to see him. He did an amazing job. I was also so correct in choosing a fan-chosen request only show to buy a ticket for. I got to sit in the front row at a great venue. He played my request. I love him!!
Wow, perhaps the best video he's ever made! & with an appearance by the man with the lightbulb head even! I've been a devout Robyn fan since '88 & it's been a pleasure growing older with him thru the years. His music has made my life all that much richer...
Wow!... Another great Robyn Hitchcock piece that I, until now, had never before heard... In his solo accoustic engagements, I often wonder if he still uses the click-toy that he once used to sound off through his microphone in order to test out the "vocal reverb effects setting" for certain songs?... Who else would have ever thought of that?... And the impromptu stories that funnel through him in between songs -- they are always a gas as well.
An excellent video, to an absolutely beautiful song, maybe it's just something in the song I'm relating to my own life at the moment, but I keep listening to this.
Agreed, and that's cool. Didn't mean to come on quite so strong. I had just been watching many videos and interviews of RH, and think he's a good dude.
@asktunes That man with the lightbulb head was an Arby's toy a loooong time ago. If I'm not mistaken, the toy in this video is one that my father gave to Robyn Hitchcock at a concert several years ago. So unless he has several, that's the one!
Hitchcock is very Bowie-esque, even to the teeth :). I will seek him out in concert. Think he's best with his "Cathedral" and "Ordinary Millionaire" style songs. His songs work well with his artist girlfriend, Michele Noack.
Cool it, RSL... I am a big R.H. fan, and 'inspiration' and plagery go hand in hand, as any creative musician knows. No offence, just seemed patently clear when I heard the song. Maybe even mr. H. himself would manage a wry smile on reading my suspicion.
What? That's 1) not true and 2) reflects your minds' limitations. You are hearing patterns that aren't there, like a hallucination. You must either be a mean spirited bombthrower, or simply someone who must put everything in a box or category, or you feel your out of control. I don't know.. but this is a unique song. By the way, why don't you count the songs that use the same chords as HOTRS, or Hotel California, or whatever, and then decide if that is any kind of criticism worth repeating.
