Good point about compositional naivety, some of the most innovative songs would be considered full of "mistakes" by modern audiences and classical music types. Except those mistakes me the song interesting and exciting to listen to. Neoclassicists tried to make Shakespeare "perfect" and "harmonious" and butchered his plays in the 18th century. Same bullshit repeating right now in the age of STEM, the whole vibe is tech, logic and perfection, not organic innovation, messiness and expression.

I think compositional naivety is the main reason why a lot of bands/artists first few releases as so good, they literally don't know what they're doing. It's just an exercise in pure, raw, naive self expression utilising whatever ideas or resources they have on hand.

arguably there's the same problem in video games. the games that aren't designed by industry veterans are mostly made by game design school graduates that learned game design in a paint-by-numbers fashion, not to mention industry execs who want something safe rather than good. There was no guide for game design in the 80's and 90's people just sat down and figured out how they could make something fun. The same for musicians, they take lego bricks off of a lego set and just rearrange the pieces, some do it cleverly mind you but very few people approach it asking themselves "How do I sound" rather than "Who do I want to sound like"

Classical music isn't a really good example in this case because a lot of what the most famous composers did was somewhat improvisational and experimental while exploring musical motifs and themes. So while there was a "proper" structure to different forms of classical composition, that often required techniques like tonic destabilization and chromaticism etc. as part of the exercise. Modern music is a much better example because everything is supposed to be restricted to set gridlines and key signatures and the constraints are even greater than those accepted by classical composers, so the scope of everything is so small and repetitive.

Ah, missed this one It'd be cool if the stream was done weekly (or bi-weekly) on some fixed schedule, like RU-vidrs usually do Also having a Discord channel, for announcements and a community That way much more people could come to the streams and you could make it grow Cheers

Yep until I get a hang of streaming I'll start a schedule and discord etc. Right now it's a bit chaotic. I should be on in about 30 mins.

I'm always confused when Metallica wannabe-defenders would defend Kirk and Lars' mediocre playing (put against their band's status) but yet, would fire their band members for being either too sloppy, either not being able to grow with the rest of the band. It's never a middle ground with this whole ordeal. If big amounts of ppl like something, it gets overhyped, because ppl get into this with way too much passion and attitude often forgetting that any hype/trend/style has an end eventually. Same deal is when in the early 2000s nu-metal nerds were going insane about Deftones' vocals calling it "genius" and trying to do that but 10 times worse and would say that they are trying not to be like everybody else. HAHA

I recently saw a small hardcore show here in Boston, first show since the pandemic, hardcore here in Boston at least has some pretty exciting young bands, but probably not on the path to world tours or making a living these days.

Yep the hardcore scene is interesting right now. It's just a bit too copycat when it comes to style.

100% agree on the 'dumbness' - first couple or three dimmu albums are a great example. Interesting riffs and then got relatively boring. naivety is exactly the right term.

I have heard a similar discussion on Finn McKenty’s channel and the whole “djent killed metal” doesn’t really hit with me because even rock bands that don’t sound “djenty” get much publicity. I have another event in mind when I think of the death of rock, the death of MTV. MTV was where all sorts of genres could just mash together. Now people just get stuck in their own silos. How the hell do rock bands sell their albums to Taylor Swift fans today? How do they sell their albums to hip hop fans? Djent isn’t known enough by anyone for people to make a judgment. What has ended up happening is with no new music played on radio or no MTV to push it is a lot of very good music is just lost into the infinite mass that is Spotify and Apple Music. Also for those who say “everyone looks like baristas” are we suggesting people look like gangsters instead? Bring out the 80’s spandex and leather? All the people who say that never seem to have a good idea on what should be worn. It’s kind of telling I never heard of either Periphery or Dirty Honey before I picked up a guitar. To me that screams out “marketing problem.”

@@CIRCLEOFTONEI’d argue that hip hop has the same issue right now, but those issues aren’t as pronounced because their silo is much larger. Other than Kendrick I can’t think of much innovation in that music either recently. It’s all mumble rap at this point.
@CIRCLEOFTONE
@CIRCLEOFTONE Год назад
Nah if you have massive events in general rappers are front and center. They are featured in Fortnight video game events for kids, getting Disney roles etc etc. Drake was a Disney Kid. Post Malone is in the news feeds of normies.
@ryanfraley7113
@ryanfraley7113 Год назад
@@CIRCLEOFTONE That’s due to hip hop being a larger and more mainstream silo IMO. Economies of scale dictate that rappers are going to get more opportunities, hip hop has way more fans.
