Let's take a look at the rock climbing photoshoot from ANTM Cycle 9! Follow Me + / jessicakobeissi + / jessicakobeissiphoto + / jessicakobeissi + www.jessicakobeissi.com Music + share.epidemicsound.com/rgwqn
When models don’t say when they’re uncomfortable: “Oh, I wish you told me!” When models voice their discomfort: “As a model, you’re going to have to hack uncomfortable situations like this!” Watching your videos really highlights how the contestants can’t win either way.
Professional rock climbers everywhere are cringing at this. I look forward to your video about how these models can’t use most of the photographs they took on the show in their portfolio.
That "I felt I was like... A sea nymph on acid scaling a wall in the sunshine" was so unexpected Ms. Shay couldn't say a damn thing but "Ohhh... Okay". Smart girl.
I love how sarcastic the answer was. She was giving them a answer and being smart about why they were asking her. But they didn't see her answer coming... 👀 😂 all their faces hilarious.
Tyra's handling of Asperger's hurts me very much. I have it too and I act like Heather. This season disappointed me with how they handled Heather. Yes it may be easier for us to look at a imaginary person of screen then to look at the judges. I would do the same thing. In my opinion, its about how comfortable and trusting we feel in a situation. The judging panel isn't the most comfortable place to be in so we might not act right. Heather is a role model for us with Autism.
I feel like Asperger's girls have the imaginary eye contact thing especially enforced too? Like if I don't make eye contact with a guy they tend to think that it means I'm intimidated and they have the freedom to do whatever they want so I kind of had to learn to force it? I dunno, maybe I'm alone in this lol.
@@haleyzwaal4183 Same. I force myself to look up at someone sometimes. And yes with the imaginary eye contact person. Cause I know they won' t talk back if you know what I mean. We fake it till we make it at times no matter how annoying that statement is
She constantly had some of the greatest photos and it made me so mad (and still does) that ANTM thinks it's "unfair" to the other contestants if someone with a disability were to get extra help. To me they're already on an uneven playing field. My brother has the same condition as Heather and we were both glad she went on to have success after she was unfairly eliminated from the show.
As a climbing teacher….since they were not too high up, it wasn’t neccesarily putting their lives at risk..BUT the knots they were hanging on, are super sloppily made. with some of the later girls you can see see that the knot already lost one of its turns aka falling apart. also there is a bit much other stuff like cables in the way of the fall-line for my taste. wouldn’t have used a carabiner to the harness either, when they have to swing around for posing etc...jeez..if you go rock climbing, just hire a professional for a day.
@@morganshryock4847 you should try it, it’s fun :) make sure you get a teacher that is very particular about knots and other safety issues. if they don’t tie the rope into your harness directly but use a carabiner instead (like in this video)..get another teacher ;)
Yeah the knots were giving me anxiety. As a beginner, I saw someone fall right in front of me and broke his arm. I'm like double- triple checking all my gear and always tie an extra knot above the knot.
@@watsonandbscuriousdays Yeah I've been wanting to try it! The gym I go to doesn't do top rope so I'll have to find somewhere else but if looks fun. I'll keep this in mind for when I eventually go :)
They way they treated Heather (and other models with disabilities especially Amanda cycle 3) was terrible. They always expect them to act as if they are able bodied with no accommodations, when they ask for accommodations they are told "you can't have special treatment". They are manipulated into thinking they can't get help for their disability because they'd have an "unfair advantage" instead of yk- helping them perform equally well as the able-bodied people. This is something that's always bothered me, especially as someone with a mental disability as well.
Some of the things they did and said to Nyle (who is deaf) was so uncomfortable to watch! Especially the photo shoot they did completely in the dark, and they gave him a hard time about not listening to directions or just reading their minds somehow 🥴
So much, i have mental health issues and my daughter is autistic, it is vile the way they treat disabled people. Its not "special treatment and advantage", its literally a way to create equity.
I have been modelling for 20 plus years and started at 17 in Tokyo. Mr Jays vague and passive aggressive 'direction' would have totally thrown me as well, especially when you are young and new to it all, far away from your family etc. To be expected to know your body, angles, understand how you look on camera, 'go there' and not 'self analyse' is ludicrous. Also, I think Tyra asked Heather about her Aspergers so she (Tyra) could appear understanding. The judges are a bunch of arseholes.
I'm not a model, but I am an artist who went to school for nearly ten years and it wasn't until the last three years (grad school) when I finally figured out how to use the critiques I got. It took me so long to be able to filter out the bullshit and actually take in the relevant critiques and implement them into my work. Taking direction or critique and actually knowing what's relevant takes y e a r s to really develop and these, mostly, brand new models have to have it figured out by their second photo shoot. It's completely impossible.
Even Tyra's pronunciation of the word pissed me off. She brought up the term for ally points, to show how "generous" and "supportive" she is to the neurodivergent and/or disabled community. (Yeah, right.)
BTW: the "Heather exchange"? Set up. The judges would go on to criticize her for always taking a "profile picture" instead of looking at the camera head on. Notice in this episode, she did look at the camera during the shoot--they just didn't use it. But they went on and on about how much they loved her profile.
I think the 5th episode was the episode she did a head on photo and they loved it, but I do agree, they definitely set it up for her to be doing only profiles
Genuinely don't understand Tyra's line of questioning to Heather with Aspergers. Having difficulty with eye contact doesn't mean you can't ever focus your eyes. She said it herself, the person off in the distance is imaginary, they don't have real eyes to make contact with. Idk maybe it's my aspergers talking but it doesn't make any sense to me.
Same. I have lots of friends who are neurodivergent and autistic (I fall under this umbrella a bit myself) and eye contact varies across the board. My friend doesn’t always make eye contact when she’s talking to me-and it’s normal for her. For me I don’t mind it unless I’m getting grilled-then I’m uncomfortable. I can imagine Heather falls somewhere in between-and I don’t think it affected her ability to model at all-she was fantastic. The questioning was still weird though-it’s pretty clear Tyra doesn’t have a very good understanding of autism in general.
@@MsAsh3070 hahah the invisible force off camera :p like when i saw that my first reaction was just “wow yes i too make wonderful eye contact with the void”
I watched "Top model Sweden" and I thought it was so boring compared to ANTM, so I always preferred ANTM. The challenges and photoshoots were so ordinary in comparison and now I understand why. They prepared them for a life in the real modeling industry. ANTM is just for the audience, they're not interested in teaching. So I understand that the photos from the show are useless in the real world.
Hahaha! I love this comment ! We talk a lot about how the ANTM models probably will not be able to use these crazy shots on their portfolios/real world . But you're right, it does make interesting tv😭😭😭
I agree! It’s a waste of time. They could have done these crazy photos shoots for the show and for entertainment. But it would have been nice to at least do real portfolio photos behind the scenes. It’s so funny how essentially those plain photos that Tyra thought were busted are the exact photos agency/clients look at to book models. She did in fact book 25 gigs. Smh! So why can’t she do plain photo shoots for these girls because God forbid they actually become Americas next top model, like for real. Tyra wants to be the only model referenced for all time. 😂
Yeah because ANTM is a reality show, so the main pointvis to make it entertaining for the audience with causing drama (like with chosing the climber as the winner) and exciting photoshoots rather than prepare the modell for a career. I didn't understand it back then, I'm sure many of the contestants didn't either, I feel bad for those who really wanted to become actual modell, though I'm sure some went there for fame and exposure and that they got as people still remember this show but bad for people who dreamed of becoming professional models.
If you haven't done it already, I'd love you to review the next shoot of this season, where girls were portraying flowers because I don't agree with their elimination choice. It would be interesting to hear your opinion.
15:34 "Some talentless photographer took these for me.." [flicks hair] "for Dior and Chanel.." [sighs] "Have you heard of Vogue before? [scoffs] Do you know where Paris is?" LMAO, Jessica your impression of Tyra is both insightful and hilarious 🤣🤣🤣Love that you have the backs of other photographers, it's nice to see photographers supporting other photographers 💗💗💗
I remembered this episode. Yeah, Tyra was such a mean girl to Ebony, probably because she favored... *whisper voice* Naomi Campbell. I don't blame Ebony why she quit the show in the later episode on the recycling photoshoot which you should react to, @Jessica Kobeissi.
I wanted to jump through the screen & fight Tyra when she said what she said to Ebony . Ebony was literally UNHAPPY . & Tyra scolded her & called her a quitter for taking care of her mental health . if Ebony would’ve harmed herself , Tyra & her team would be paying the consequences .
I’m always astounded by Trya’s ability to come up with a myriad of ways to force these girls into cruel and unusual punishment under the guise of “modeling”.
@@5117danielle true but this one was especially heinous as the winner was clearly favored and had an unfair advantage. Tyra’s Ego won there, nit talent. She’d pick the one who went to her camp.
They where mean to Victoria too when they called her pricköy and kicked her out when she protested. And then who forgets when Tyra julledigt at Ebony.Ugh.
The girl they called "unusual" gets eliminated I think the next episode. They make all the models into plants that "fit their personality" and she kinda calls them out for making her a cactus. They call her personally prickly... They pegged her as the "weird girl" and vote her off for it.
“We noticed you have a hard time with eye contact, so why can you make eye contact with an imaginary person so well?” What? Heather’s literally not looking in anyone else’s eyes in that photo, which is probably why she was comfortable making that expression/holding that gaze. I don’t have Aspergers so I wont speak to whether or not that interaction was offensive, but it was definitely confusing
I am on the autism spectrum, and eye contact for me is overwhelming. I often look away and into the figurative distance to help me concentrate if I’m having a conversation. Heather looking to the side really has nothing to do with eye contact. Tyra’s comment doesn’t offend me, but she is taking what little she knows about the disorder and misapplying it, and trying to make it seem like she knows a lot about the subject. As with everything, autism effects people with it and manifests itself in different ways, but she is generalizing. This cycle aired years ago, so it’s hard to judge Tyra when Asperger’s was a new subject to many.
I would love to see you review an episode of Naomi Campbell’s show The Face and how it relates to ANTM. To me, that show nails every area where ANTM is flawed. If I remember correctly, they show multiple photos the models took instead of one, focus WAY less on interpersonal drama, give practical real world feedback and the photoshoots are way more realistic. Would love to hear your perspective on it! Also would love to see you react to Twiggy and Victoria’s beef from this season and the scene she stands up to the judges for being told she has a prickly disposition
@@dakotawinchester I think it’s only boring if you don’t have a genuine interest in fashion, modeling and photography. That’s fine, but in that case shows like ANTM that create conflict at the expense of the girls well-being for viewer entertainment are best suited for you
@@dakotawinchester girl what? it’s clear you didn’t watch the show and assuming someone who liked it would be entertained by The Bachelor when you’re the one who thinks it’s boring because it doesn’t have cheap trashy drama like ANTM, nice try. Just admit you have bad taste and go
And this isn't the only shoot this season they did that involved heights. They posed as "gargoyles" on the top of a very high building which upset some of the girls.
If I recall, Tyra's mom took her pictures. She had referenced that in other episodes and even brought her mom into one of the episodes to meet the girls. It's been so long since I've seen the show but...pretty confident about this.
Oh yes! This one shoot was a staple of this cycle. I can’t wait to see your videos about the non-usability of most of the photos. I think, most of the finale photos are usable because they are done by those who give the prizes, but during the regular shooting, I can think of one in Cycle 15 (the one that the models have to go on Rodeo Drive and shoot for three pictures, episode 6).
I think I read/heard somewhere that a model's portfolio should show them as some sort of a clean slate? Like, no makeup, white tees and jeans kinda vibe? Even in the photos Tyra showed (the ones that booked her 25 jobs) she didn't look or pose too crazy.
Every week Victoria was on the show Twiggy had something to say about her. Week 1- Twiggy calls her insecure Week 2-Twiggy says she's unusual Week 3- Twiggy calls her personality prickly.
I disagree. Twiggy was trying to compliment her week 1. Yes it wasn't eloquent but Victoria jumped on her week 2 'unusual' isn't an insult and then Victoria jumped on her again. So by week 3 Victoria really made herself seem prickly. I don't know why people defend Victoria so much, she was pretty rude to Twiggy first. Remember the other judges were the ones that pointed out how Victoria spoke to Twiggy too.
You should react to the episode where Twiggy makes another comment about Victoria and Victoria calls her out again- and this time, it's a bigger moment. It was amazing, I was so proud of her. The photoshoot that episode also produced some of the most STUNNING pictures in the entire show.
Loved Lisa on this season, she was also the winning model on Project Runway. Please bring her on your show for questions, would love to hear her thoughts on both shows! 💜💜💜
I always felt they treated Heather strangely. They’d give her mixed messages, want her to be a certain way and then they’d almost treat her like a stupid child. Idk it always made me feel uncomfortable.
I haven't been on a rock wall since I was a kid. But I remember the instructors being really adamant that I change out of my boots and put on sneakers. They weren't even heels, they just a had 1-inch platform. This deeply hurts me inside.
OMG Ebony they did her dirty I almost forgot. She didn't feel happy in the competition and she was shy. They shamed her for it, how Tyra handled it was wrong. They took her shyness for stuck up and her wanting to go home they basically had this air that she waisted their time.
@@BIOL6895 Ya Ebony wanted to leave but the way she was dismissed. "If you want to leave than leave" than Tyra did a gesture like showing her away. Everyone has the right to change their mind specially if it's not something that's making her happy
I know I keep saying this, but I’d love for you to do a series of photoshoots based off these crazy ANTM shoots, you could show us how these nonsensical shoots can be turned into something usable, saved and makes sense! And I totally thought they were doing to add in some mountain scene and removed the grips, making it look like they were actually climbing.
Looking at a wall is nothing like looking into a person's eyes. How dare them even bring up her disability like that. Alot of ppl have problems with eye contact first of all second of all wtf does eye contact have to do with modeling. I feel like they could have just left all of that out. It says way more about Tyra as a person than it did about the model. I mean wtf do u respond to that? The model did great at responding cause if it were me I'd have said cause that's a wall not a person looking back at me.
Victoria asking Twiggy what made her "unusual" felt like she was calling her BS and when she couldn't answer, she gave that "well I don't think you need to know" comment. I don't remember watching this season but I feel like Victoria is a little bit more "with it" than the other girls when it comes to what the judges say and ask.
I think she's perceptive, it's a great quality because she wants to understand. She'd be a great student, with the right mentor but sadly she got antm level mentors. Judges really think they can make hanging random comments they can't even explain themselves 😂 it makes them look like they don't even know what they're saying, and their experience don't even back up what they say
According to the Oliver Twixt interviews he did with Jenah, Ambreal, Lisa, Sarah, Bianca and Chantal and they all said one thing...Victoria not only was hip to it, she learned of her own accord how it was set up, but she called them OUT! When I said them I mean Twiggy, Tyra AND most importantly production, in panel at that! She blew up their entire spot! And unfortunately we will never get to see it
“Your eyebrows- insecurity.” “Your toenail- cOnFiDeNcE” 🤣🤣🤣 Omg, I am in love with you and your channel!!! 🙌 Lol!! I’ve been a bit 🤏 obsessed since I discovered you a couple of days ago. ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Jessica please react on Ebony's elimination episode from this cycle where Tyra was so inappropriate and shamed her for quitting. After they've bullied her so much.
As a rock climber... just no. The ropes should be through the harness, not on a carabiner and through the belay loop. Those are some of the sloppiest figure 8 knots, those safety knots are some bs. Those heels and the long loose fabric is just a recipe for a disaster. And with how some of those girls were flipping around, I very much hope those harnesses were sized to them properly. But knowing this show probably not all of them were sized correctly.
I want texture and shadows on that backdrop! Did you hear, I think Jenah or Kasia said The models don’t necessarily even see a finished shot on the wall. The retouching isn’t always done in time for judging. So they have a tough time knowing how they really did. They aren’t seeing the finished result! I thought that was crazy! So some of the photos they see for the first time when they watch the show!
Hi Jessica! I love your antm reaction videos. I can't believe I watched so much of this toxic show as a child🤯. Anyways I hope you have a wonderful day!❤
I think Tyra's point with her "busted" photos was because Ebony thought she did a bad job and she was trying to explain that sometimes as a model you may think a picture of you doesn't look good but it may be exactly what someone else is looking for
The thing that strikes me when I look back at this show after ten+ years is how young the girls were! I watched this thinking these contestants were so grown up! 😂 They were just little girls oml and the way they got treated 😢
I'm on the autism spectrum and i thought it was a pretty nice conversation they had with Heather. Something people with autism often do is worry about how we come across, and being told that I'm doing a good job at masking my autism makes me more comfortable
im autistic and i don’t find what was said to be a comforting sentiment. being encouraged/ forced to keep masking can be very dangerous- as autistic people, masking can lead to depression and identity issues that can damage us for a lifetime. you wouldn’t apply the same rules to physical disabilities- autism is just as much as a disability just because you can’t see it. masking makes me feel extremely uncomfortable, it’s confusing, painful, and it angers me today when i am expected to “mask up” in situations that i find to be overwhelming or too much for me and all i want to do is stim, or god forbid- break eye contact. what tyra is preaching is a very dangerous sentiment and im sorry that society has let us down so deeply that we have to make *others* feel comfortable and safe before ourselves. this season is a great example how Autistic folk everywhere have been deeply let down by society as a whole and are continually expected to mask and fit into their moulds.
@@pandarose4077 surely feeling let down by society is an experience that most people have? I don't expect the majority to go out of their way to accommodate me, imo minorities should adapt to how the majority are and do things But yeah, regardless, I'm sad to hear how you feel. I can't say i feel the same way you do, but i don't have particular high standards
@@machoke666 no i stand fully by what i said:) the school system let me down! more than the majority of neurotypical students. health care let me down! misdiagnosed me over 15 times until i figured it out at 32. nope. society fails to educate, and inform that all it takes is a different style of communication, and allowing each person to have that knowledge to help have our needs met- because it’s usually a very minuscule task as example: letting an autistic person stim- or again BREAK EYE CONTACT. these norms are made to work against us, not with us. yes, of course others get pulled under the tow of a crumbling society but nah. this is all miseducation and keeping people aligned to some sort of “norm” that truly doesn’t even exist
@@machoke666 sadly if you are in the US i would say the country is failing all of its citizens neurodivergent or not - that much is sadly very very true
however again….it’s the inner working of the system that affect autistic people a little more deeply- my career thru school and working has been extremely traumatic. and thats not on me to correct, that’s the system that needs fixing
I think they should have put something in the background other than just a white backdrop. They could have done space like you said or I think a blue sky would have been beautiful too
I remember when this season aired live, Heather won Cover Girl of the week every single week and even the week after she was eliminated. 😂 I wonder if Covergirl had picked her to win then changed their mind?
I am surprised that you haven’t covered a photoshoot involving Victoria from this cycle sooner. I think you would like her and her other 2 photoshoots.
Can't wait for that video about why they can't use their photos for their portfolios. Also, would love to know your thoughts about the Try Guys channel video in which the Try Moms recreate iconic magazine covers. They talk about body image and the supportive mood on set is beautiful! Women supporting one another! Love to see it ❤
I love your videos. I enjoyed ANTM growing up when I was blind to all the insensitivity of Tyra and her team. I’ve wanted to rewatch the show but I don’t want her or anyone else to profit from the plays. So I’ve decided to watch your videos because I get my fill of ANTM plus all the bonus shade and tea you share with us. Thanks, girl! 😊
I've watched at LEAST 10 of your reaction videos.. GURL YES!!! Your sarcasm is 🔥 We tend to get so caught up in just watching these competition shows and never hear another point of view. The fact that you're a photographer and u work behind the beauty is fantastic. I thank you SO much for making these trash shows be broken down. ❤❤❤
Coming from someone who actually climbs: yeah, this ain't it. -Why are they dangling and holding onto the rope like that? The whole point of climbing is to actually climb, not dangle on a rope in weird ways. The wall might as well not even be there. -You could take much cooler photos (even in the gym) with an actual climber who knows how to do cool poses by using the holds themselves and their own strength/body positioning, not by hanging onto the rope. Just look at any climbing or outdoor publication to see this. If you look at all their photos, there's zero muscle tension, and so they all look copied and pasted on the wall. -I climbed in heels once as a fun screw-around thing with friends and it's not unmanageable if you're using easy holds, but it looks stupid, not edgy.
i love ur dry humor nd satire wit Jessica, i rly want to rewatch this entire show without cutting scenes but then i realise how much your presence is important. please make more videos !
"how are you making such good eye contact?" with the void?? MA'AM like i snorted out loud when Tyra asked that. I'm (using my gf's account) am autistic+adhd and i am :):):):):):):):) FULL of thoughts and feels to deliver about how they treated/handled Heather--its all just so absolutely infuriating.
I was considering rewatching ANTM after reading about all the mental stuff that didn’t really register with me as teenager but binging Jessica’s videos is a million times better!
Could you react to Cycle 22 Epidode 8 where they do a photoshoot in the woods at night? I felt really bad for Nyle, annoyed by the attitude of the creative director and sad for Mame when Tyra did NOT pick her best shot. Anyway, I'd love to see your reaction. Love your videos ❤
Aspergers is an outdated term - it should be autism spectrum disorder. A lot of times ppl with ASD have to “mask” their symptoms and often is why it can be hard to diagnose or notice. We will sometimes force eye contact, or try to blend in to be accepted (from my personal experience)
Does ANYBODY know what Jay means when he says “you’re just posing”?? What does he want them to do instead?? Sing?! They’re models, they pose. He looks for any reason to complain lol
i truly believed they love Heather, and thats why she was almost all the time getting nice feedback, however at the end they decided to get a more commercial looking girl to be the winner
I think it's funny how one of the girls was like "I've never rocked climbed in heels before" but honestly, has anyone ever rocked climbed in before? It was probably all of the girls' first time doing this kind of shoot. In all actuality though, the girls weren't technically "rock climbing" on the wall. It was more like they were posing on a rock climbing wall in a harness and modeling...so, yeah. **side note/spoiler alert; Saleisha actually comes back later in one of the seasons and wins ANTM for that cycle. *Also, Bianca always reminded me of Moesha for some reason. Anyone else think/thought that??
It could be helpful including an outro. I sometimes think the video got disconnected when it's actually just the end of the video. Also, you're spot on with how they set these models up for failure.
I used to love this show back in the day. I watched it with my mom. How did I not notice how demeaning they talk to and treat the models? Jessica really woke me up and calls it like it is!!
I love how you edit your videos but sometimes I wish you let more of the judges feedback for each picture for comparison! I like hearing how your feedback varies from theirs♥️♥️♥️
Jessica!! I just have to say, as a newbie to the photography world, you are such a HUGE inspiration to me!!! Would die to get some mentoring from you!!! Love you!!!!!
Interesting to see this, and you fast forward to today (where rock climbing is definitely gaining a lot of popularity). Alex Honnold recently shot with the ESPN athlete special and did a feature in GQ, haha. Maybe not super high end fashion necessarily but it is interesting to see the two cross over many years later.
I truly wish this show could exist with the actual intention of teaching the contestants and those watching, about the industry, without all the negativity. Constructive criticism, sure, mean girls mentality, leave it at the door. Edit: and without the rigging 😒 Seriously they all deserve a fair shot at winning. But giving people the knowledge to be able to continue their path to success with photos that they can actually use and experiences they can realistically use, is not losing either.
Ambreal’s made me actually gasp! Idk anything about her and she could be a fun one to follow up with! I used to watch the show with my mom and sister as a kid but never kept up with the later seasons and I am lovinggg your series!!!
As a woman with autism, we learn to mask. I can look at someone in the eye if I have to. I can't talk for other people, but we learn to act. We can fake it even if its extremely uncomfortable. That conversation was not professional and was just uncomfortable to watch. It's Tyra just trying to bring something to show she think she knows something about something, or just trying to use Asperger's to cause more drama as she usually does. She was commenting on something Heather can't control. Heather honestly reacted extremely well.
