The Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame is pretty much a bad joke. Many of the judges & insiders are hip-hop & mainstream pop writers that don't know the history of the rock genre or have love for it. Many deserving, influential rock bands & artists aren't in it, while many marginal pop artists who can't sing, play an instrument, write songs or reproduce their music live onstage get nominated. What the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Shame really has become is a repository for politically correct pop stars.

Nazareth is a band I've always wanted to see get in. I know it's never going to happen, but "back in the day" everyone I knew that were into rock music had Nazareth in their collection, and several bands have stated their influence. Pete is the only surviving member. Not for myself, but I'd like to see the band being recognized for their many years of touring, dedication, and their kick-a** albums.

It's also a cruel joke that The Guess Who have never been nominated. I'm a Foreigner fan but I know full well the RRHOF is a complete joke. Foreigner and Frampton should've been inducted years ago and that goes for countless other great ROCK artists. Hey, at least Dolly Parton was inducted...unf'nbelievable.

while Oasis fell off in the US rather quickly, they stayed big in the Uk, Europe, and Asia. Their first 2 albums were highly influential and WTSMG broke records particularly in the Uk. In some ways, they are in the Uk what Nirvana was in the US. Oasis captured a time and place in early 90’s Uk and kicked off 90’s Brit Pop

As Hiphop goes both Eric B. & Rakim along with A Tribe Called Quest are good choices. I'm saying that and not being a huge hiphop guy. Much more into 1970's rock and soul. Still if you need a few hiphop artists in Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. Both those are good picks. Others that really should get in or be nominated: Blue Öyster Cult Kansas UFO King Crimson Jethro Tull Grand Funk Railroad The Dixie Dregs Manfred Mann's Earth Band Rainbow Thin Lizzy Uriah Heep Wishbone Ash Those are the kinds of bands I really like to see in the Hall of Fame. I have no "hate" against any nominated but to see like Andy Powell (Wishbone Ash) on that stage would give me so much more than Mariah Carey, Oasis or Kool And The Gang. Whom I all respect as artists mind you!

Agree. Rock’n’roll was in the 50s, but the show would have only lasted a year to recognize the top rock and rollers. So doesn’t matter what kind of music they play as long as they are entertaining.

This is one of the best videos about RRHoF I've seen here, I agree with the argument that Rock'n Roll is more than rock instruments. I know these "echo chambers" you guys talk about and if it was up to those echo chambers, only white Anglo-American bands from the 70s should be eligible for nomination. In a way I like that RRHoF is a kick against those echo chambers. Having said that I couldn't care less about it.

I would lean on the side of the coin that says you can define rock and roll more narrowly and still have a wide range of music. It strikes me as marketing to a wider, more diverse, more inclusive audience as the motivation to the widening of the field of nominees and inductees, and of course to a wider interest in the museum. That's not to say that pop music, country music, rap and hip hop, etc. are any lesser or greater on the grand scale or that there aren't many cases of influence or overlap regarding musical techniques, a song style or even a crossover album that shows a performer's or band's range. But a rock hall inductee or band should have reached great heights in measurable performance or staying power while performing mostly rock music, even with a fairly wide definition. It is difficult - where are the lines between hip-hop, rap, disco, R&B, modern country, or folk music with rock and roll? Early country storytelling has influenced countless rockers and rock has heavily influenced modern country instrumentally. There's probably a fair amount of 50s R&R or 60s folk that I wouldn't necessarily consider R&R under my definition, but TJR's comment on an attitude is probably apt for setting wider boundaries. However, the Grammys wouldn't nominate Mariah Carey or Dolly Parton for best Rock Album, would they? There are Halls of Fame for all of the other genres of music, so excluding people whose music doesn't really fit the R&R HOF wouldn't be some kind of injustice. I would love to see Peter Frampton and Oasis make it; strong cases can certainly be made for Kravitz and Matthews (who I've seen perform) and Jane's Addiction (who I've heard referenced enough times). That's pretty much where I draw the line, and unfortunately, they're all men, which is a problem when marketing a "general interest" destination museum. I bought some Foreigner albums back in the day, though I wouldn't consider them Hall of Fame worthy, but they did have quite a few high-charting songs and were extremely popular for five years or so. I would like to see a band like Kansas get some love for their craftsmanship. There are many inductees who are women and people of color. If fact, there's an average of 95 inductees per decade for the last four decades, which I would argue is too low of a bar and too many to make a museum experience capable of being digested. There's nothing wrong with have temporary museum displays or shows explaining crossover elements and giving a nod to non-rock musicians who may have had influence in certain ways without inducting them.

Mariah Carey? Mary J Blige? Cher? Really? Dave Matthews, Janes Addiction, Ozzy, Oasis, yes, but how can the first three be classed as Rock n Roll? It mystifies me as to how many others keep getting overlooked. I'm with you guys as regards Boston and Bad Company, but I also think that The Bangles should be on the list, a good rock n roll band live, and they represent women in the music business with dignity, and are influential to female artists in both pop and rock..

I really like when you two discuss this type of thing more than the outcome of who is nominated or wins at being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall. I don't really understand the politics of the decision making. It seems like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is more exclusive that the Grammys but I don't know a thing about it. There are definitely a lot more categories for the Grammys. That's all I know.

I don't mind the RRHoF expanding their base, but what I don't like is how are votes add up to nothing. They already have who they are going to induct in mind before the voting begins. As of today, Cher and Maria are in the 6th and 7th positions. Ozzy is top and Peter Frampton is in 3rd. Janes's Addiction is way low on the totem poll.

If I were to choose five from this list I would say Foreigner, Frampton, Sinead, Erik B, and Rakim and Mary J. Blige, AM Pop singles bands from the sixties and seventies need to be recognized. The Monkees, Three Dog Night, Tommy James and the Shondells, Paul Revere and the Raiders, and the Guess Who all should be in.

The truth is that the title is a marketing thing. It sounds cooler to call it the Rock and Roll hall of fame, and it acknowledged that music has differences but the lines have blurred over the years. Rock embraces soul, jazz, country, and folk. It is an all encompassing influence.

I am not a fan of arena rock - I’m into soul, blues, jazz and reggae - but I believe there is value in the RRHF. It is valuable for the family members of those who are nominated and are no longer alive. To a sister, daughter, widow or son of a late rocker inducted into the RRHF, it has meaning. So stop quibbling because your favorites were not nominated.

Well at least they did Foreigner, Cher , and Peter Frampton . One of the main criteria is supposed to be influence but we know that is bs . If that were so inventor of surf guitar Dick Dale would have been long time ago. Same with King Crimson . My personal favorites Jethro Tull, Guess Who , Bachman Turner Overdrive , INXS , Gerry Rafferty and B52s didn’t make it again . We know this Institution sucks but it fits right in with MAGAs , Woke , puberty blockers , Gordon Gekko taking over College football and wiping out PAC 12 etc. Hence idiocracy is here and has taken over . It is so severe that I don’t think even AI wants to remain on Planet Earth As I have stated every year I am not a Heavy Metal fan per se , but they have been unjustly snubbed through the years in favor of hip hop. I would like to know the individual names of the asinine people who do the nominations and selections . Wouldn’t be surprised if they had an Epstein connection.

I think what is happening is there is a kind of "get everything covered" type thing going on with the RNRHOF, nominate RB, RAP, POP, ROCK,METAL and then look for some we may have missed over the years that "fans" have been clamoring about. It's funny for someone like Lenny Kravitz to get his first nod, but it's a decade late for him, he was eligible in 2014. I understand the "why" on Mariah Carey, but I think this is there superstar nominee, either way on her I would not be surprised if she got in, over more noted rock acts on this list. I pretty much understand all these nominees for various reasons. Eric B and Rakim are actually more of pioneers of RAP then Rappers that are in, some have cited the omission of them. Foreigner has been mentioned many times, but they too have pissed some off and not been critic darlings, so it's interesting how they are finally given a nod here because members have been vocal about the politics. For me one omission to me and probably will never get a nod is STYX. I put them above some that have gotten in because of their run of four consecutive multiplatinum albums something at the time the Beatles had only done. But again they have rarely been on the critics list, including one critic who called one of their 70's albums, a "Parking lot of whale vomit" so I don't think they are getting a nod but for me should be in there more than Foriegner and even more than a Kansas or Boston, for me at least.

I can’t really complain much about the choices the RNR HOF make, because I’m pretty selective myself about what I like. For my money, for every band/artist I listen to, there’s several I don’t care for. That being said, I listen to a wide variety of genres. I’m just selective about which ones in a particular genre I listen to. It’s interesting to note that Tom Morello initially didn’t want a rapper in his band. I think he was going for the traditional vocalist for RATM. I don’t know how different beyond the vocal style this would have made them sound, but it definitely wouldn’t have been the same. Rap is one I prefer to avoid, if I can. I remember hearing RUN DMC and Cypress Hill when I was younger and not minding them so much, but rap usually just annoys me. Lol Count me among ones that don’t think rap should be in there, but like I said I’m not an ideal candidate for a panel to approve anyone to the HOF. I visited once, even buying a rare Beatles album and a copy of Physical Graffiti there when record vendors were allowed in, but it’s not something to get upset about if your favorite band/artist gets snubbed. Maybe they’re too good for it?

As I always say: Why does anyone care? The R&R HoF is not like a sports HoF, specifically baseball. Players fade into obscurity if they are not immortalized or have some memorable moment or award attached to them. These artists' music does not fade. I can't turn on a classic rock station without hearing Foreigner, Bad Company, Peter Frampton, or Grand Funk. Same goes for Journey prior to them being in. People can have their music and listen whenever they want.

In defense of Mariah Carey. While not rock, she was hugely influential in pop/ rap collaborations, and using old samples to make a new song. - 221 million albums (Mostly physical sales) - 19 #1 Billboard Hot 100 hits (Only The Beatles have more, with 20) - Co-wrote, co-produced, co-arranged all of her original songs - Great song catalog (That is, if you like pop music) (I'd say she's comparable to Taylor Swift today) - Amazing vocalist and funny personality Mariah deserves to be in there as much as any of those other 14 artists.
