The two bands did know each other and played shows together. The most infamous was the Memphis 1971 show where Coven freaked out Black Sabbath. Tony Iommi did a interview several years ago for Guitar Player Magazine and there is a part called “Black Sabbath’s Occult Past” and Iommi admits that none of the members really had a issue with the inverted cross on the first album inlay. He stated it was something they were all into at the time. Before playing shows together when Sabbath first came to America, they were introduced to Coven and Ozzy Osbourne was introduced to Greg Oz Osborne as “The New Ozzy” With the Tate-Labianca murder trials taking place and linking counter culture groups to the so called Manson Family and the murders, Mercury Records (its sub label, Vertigo Records, WB became the distribution for US and Canada) were looking for a more church friendly band. And this is the case with Black Sabbath as they played gigs at several churches in the US. Another reason the inverted cross did not appear on the US and Canadian release of the album. Those tickets can be found online.

Why would tony lie and say he doesn’t know who they are while sweating? Weird

I, think Sabbath got Ozzy's name, & their name, from Coven. I didn't catch the Electric Funeral riff though. That's interesting. I'm a big fan of that particular Coven album. With the exception of the Satanic mass. I like every song on that album. I feel the same about Sabbath's album too. I love Sabbath to death, but I definitely think they borrowed from Coven. Well done video. 👍

Who’s first is a little depending on personal opinions on what Metal is. Back then , we called Zeppelin , MC5 , The Stooges , Sabbath , Hendrix , Cooper , Purple , AC/DC and Kiss simply ; Hard rock. Dividing them into specific genres REALLY didn’t come into affect until mid to late 70’s. Then as the 80’s ticked away , the snowball rolled along and the number of subgenres to main genres grew. Heavy/Black/Speed/Dome/Thrash/Soft/Sleaze/Hair-Metal are just a few , from the top of my head , that I can think of. Off course it’s a little different everywhere , but around my parts , Sabbath , at least , gets the credit for making it generally known amongst the kids (old men) in my generation. That’s gotta count for something. Cheers bro !

I think that Jynx Dawson might have done the devil horns as a way of worshiping Satan at the end of her shows, and then saying hail Satan.

Don't forget Black Widow, 1st album released in 1970. King Crimson also covered Holst's Mars in 1969.

Black Widow and Black Sabbath also shared the same manager as well. They were good friends for some time.

"Do a youtube search on Black Sabbath Children of the Grave, forward to around 4:19 (toward the end of the song) and listen to the riff, then lookup Coven Wicked Woman (recorded 3 years before Children of the grave), forward to around 1:26 and listen to the riff...almost exactly the same."

Crap! It’s not even close. That’s just a chord progression what’s been used by many.

Black Sabbath- THE band that birthed heavy metal! Not Cream, not Coven, not Led Zeppelin, not Deep Purple.

Deep Purple - Mandrake Root from 1968 is one of the first heavy metal songs ever. if not the first. it's before zeppelin or anything. but it was probably inspired from hendrix's purple haze

@@charlesbronson4282 Sure. but I prefer Rainbow's first 3 albums to anything Purple ever done. At that time Rainbow played larger than life, intellectual epic stuff. Subgenres like Neoclassical, symphonic, progressive and power metal, all these began with Rainbow's influence.

The first Black Sabbath tune is kind of a rip on Dazed and Confused. And Paranoid is a rip on Communication Breakdown.

That coven album is crap mostly. A couple or so decent tracks. Music counts and Sabbath was miles above this poverty band. Although in their defense. They did up a pretty good album in 1974 called Blood on the Snow. Which largely strayed from the satanic themes. Their second album is pretty okay too from 1971. Blood on the snow is their best album imho

Sabbath was far more tongue in cheek than Coven, Ozzy was the clown prince of darkness. Incidentally, there was an 80's thrash band also called Coven, who were far nastier than either. Be careful with that stuff.. one should strive for balance within duality rather than one side of a polarity over the other, young sir.

There’s an interview I think in 1971 where geezer basically calls himself a satanist im not saying he was but it definitely wasn’t just the labels doing it the band enjoyed playing up to it

I remember a fanzine article (Circus maybe?) where Ozzy talked about having a satanic altar in his house and his wife (before Sharon) freaked out and destroyed it and poured holy water on him. I have never read anything about it since - I wish I had kept all those old magazines.

Coven may have been the 1st band to do the horns, but Arthur Brown was before Coven, Sabbath and Alice Cooper. I would think he'd be the first to do shock rock! Good segment though.......
@nickcarroll5034
@nickcarroll5034 7 месяцев назад
haha you might as well argue screamin Jay Hawkins and Lord Sutch then
@raymondgraisson2048
@raymondgraisson2048 7 месяцев назад
Ironic you mentioned that. I just looked into Screaming Lord Sutch who was influenced by Screaming Jay Hawkins. I don't think anyone would be wrong to say Arthur Brown invented Shock Rock. Cause Screaming Lord Sutch I don't think made it out of England. Alice Cooper definitely got Ball rolling most on Shock Rock!😁
