Taiwan is literally nicknamed the ''sea fortress'' Drew, it is basically a giant rock. Look up an elevation map of Taiwan, it is crazy how elevated it is given that it's a fairly small island. There are only two actual big stretches of beaches that people can use to get to Taiwan, the rest are just impassable cliffsides. That's why during WW2, American generals concluded that it would be easier to invade mainland Japan than it would be to invade Japanese-occupied Taiwan.
