The Woodland Shrimps are in Cornwall where we go rock pooling near Penzance. We discover crabs, shellfish, anemones, fish, seaweeds and starfish in the incredible, crystal-clear Cornish waters. We had an amazing time discovering and learning about the sea creatures that call the rock pools home. 🦀🐟🐚🌊
Hopefully this video will inspire other parents to grab a bucket and net and get their kids out in the rock pools whilst on holiday.
All the best,
Matt + Finn 👍

Fantastic!! We love how Finn jumps straight in, so confident holding the crabs! Can't beat a bit of educational rock pooling! 💚

Thanks Em. Yes there's few things better than rock pooling with the kids on a nice day and you're right that Finn's right in there with the crabs. This coming year we're hoping to get a foraging hook and go after some bigger stuff - maybe even a lobster 👍 like John Fish Locker (if you've seen his excellent foraging videos shot around Cornwall). But to be honest, just to be back on the coast flipping those rocks will be good enough. Thanks for watching and commenting. Take care, Matt, Finn and Ada 👊

@@WoodlandShrimps Oh John and James are favorites of ours, we love watching John, its what I used to do with my dad when we'd go to Wales once a month - have family there. Sounds absolutely fantastic! I hope that you all have an amazing time ahead, adventures, discoveries and learning ofcorse! 😊 💚

On the southern Oregon coast, we didn't have quite as colorful a landscape with our tidepools. But we loved exploring and learning with our kids as you are doing here. Precious times!! Maybe I will visit those gorgeous shores of yours one day!! Thank you for sharing such a delightful visit with your charming children... (who will only grow up much too soon, as I well know!) Bless you always in your affection for the good things of this earth.

Hi Stuart, thanks for checking out our video and writing such a fantastic comment. Regarding how colourful everything is, this isn’t the same for the whole of the UK as we also often go rock pooling in North Wales and that’s much more like how you describe your local coastline with more muted colours. Cornwall really is amazing and we try to head down there once a year in late Spring/early summer which is when everything in the tide pools is looking it’s best. If we get lucky with the weather and tide heights then it’s just amazing what we can see and the kids love it. Hope all’s good with you. Best wishes, Matt, Finn and Ada 🙏👍

@WoodlandShrimps Thanks for clarifying about the colors in the general region. We lived 20 years in Coos Bay, Oregon and enjoyed the "fascinating flora and fauna frequently" every Summer! Oregon has beaches that belong to the public along most of its entire shore, and there are special cleanup days when people fan out and remove tons of debris. I went to pick up what I expected to be an old bit of white canvas. Instead, it turned out to be a huge "mermaid's purse" for a Raja Binoculata, or, the Giant Pacific Skate. (That was quite a reward for my work and was shared with many classrooms after that!) Isn't it a delight to spark fascination for this world in young people? May you always be safe, never turning your backs on the sea, but always learning, discovering and delighting in something new! (Oh, and two favorite memories are of finding a Lemon Dorid and at a later time, a blue sea star... Joys Abounding!!)

@@stuartstein2402 I totally agree with the importance of sparking interest in our young people as they hold the key to protecting the natural world. That's one of the main drivers to the channel: to hopefully encourage parents to get outside with their own kids and experience all the fun that can come from doing this. And with this should come a greater appreciation of it and a desire to look after it. Fingers crossed anyway! Hope you stay safe as well and keep coming across those shoreline treasures!

@WoodlandShrimps We applaud you as kindred spirits! As for us, we are on the waning end of our family "life cycle." Now, we're looking back and so grateful for our children growing up to love life and become great people, loving others well, serving the Lord, contributing with professional careers, and their lives rich with joy through other adventuring and music hobbies. (Just waiting for those precious grandchildren now!) Kudos to you again, for your lovely videos! Warmest regards, and wellies still full of salt water - Oops!

What a fantastic educational opportunity for the little ones!! 👏. I am also learning about the marine life watching your vids, , but Finn knows tons more that I do !! Keep on sharing your wealth of knowledge 💕

Hi Garrison, yes it was great being by the sea whilst on holiday in Cornwall. We live in land-locked Manchester so exploring the coast is not something we can do particularly easily, so being down there poking around in the rock pools was amazing and the kids loved it. Glad you learnt a thing or two - we were finding new things each time we went rock pooling and so went home to research what they might be - it's great fun. Take care, Matt + Finn 🙏

Thanks for all your care of the animals and passing on the passion for rockpooling to the children 😀. Some sort of sea slug eggs near the start 🙂, then an annelid (scale) worm species at the next query. There's also some bif yellow blobs with the broad-clawed porcelain crabs on the rock which are called Berthella plumula sea slugs. Thanks! 🌊

Hi Lorna, thanks for answering those queries as I always hoped someone would - you're obviously someone who knows their marine biology 👍. Yes I think it's crucial to harness the kids' natural curiosity and enthusiasm, but also teach them to be gentle with whatever they're looking at and handling. We were back in Cornwall again this summer but unfortunately the tide times/heights weren't in our favour, but fingers crossed for more luck next time. Thanks again 🙂

@@WoodlandShrimps No problem! I'm a keen enthusiast, raised for much of my childhood by the sea and have carried the love for it into my adulthood. I'm very grateful to have been introduced to rockpooling by my parents. Hopefully you'll hear the same from your children in future 😀 🌊. Take care, Lorna
