Sometimes it just works out that way. For this sequence, which really isn't that important to the story, the team was left to do pretty much what we wanted. There is a "magic" that can happen when making a film when all the ingredients come together right, and this is one of those times IMO. Nobody can predict when or what it takes for the magic to happen but it's something filmmakers (such as myself) become addicted to and it's what keeps us coming back for more. I say celebrate this gem for what it is. A big shout-out goes to animators John Celestri (Cindy) and Anne-Marie Bardwell (Angel) for bringing my (Verne Andru) storyboards and layouts to life.

I agree. She's a really fun character and I love her overall design as well. Sad such an entertaining character barely got anything else.

We were going for best-of-the-best 'Disney' style full animation (with adult themes) and had some of the top animators working on it including Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnson - two of Walt Disney's 'wise men.' For the special effects (lame by today's standards) we contracted Industrial Light and Magic. In fact, I believe Rock & Rule was the first outside contract ILM did after Star Wars IV.

No kiddin' she's one of the sexiest furry women next to Rebecca Cunningham, Minerva Mink, Callie Briggs on Swat Kats and more. And there's nothing wrong with anyone finding furry women, alien women, mutant women, magical creature women or cyborg women sexy afterall they are people who are different. I mean there is a difference between furry folk and feral critters. For example Angel, Minerva, Julie Bruin on tiny toons, Peg Pete, Callie Briggs, Rebecca Cunningham from Talespin etc. i can understand any guy can find hot as they are designed that way. Even in Talespin's world and Rock and Rule's world there are anthro folk who co-exist with normal animal critters they have in zoos/for food/pets/ride on and all which makes it safe for viewers to find the women on Talespin or Angel in this movie attractive as even the anthros in Talespin and Rock and Rule call themselves men and women and call themselves people. While something like Georgette from Oliver and Company or Nala from Lion King are just plain regular animal critters that eat out of the bowel, eat kibbles and bits, hunt in the wild, live in the wild or just plain pets as there's nothing sexy about 4 legged critters, sure Nala and Georgette are pretty but anyone finding them sexy is drawing the line.

Yet Cindy is more sexualized than her.

She's probably just met a few of them. Given Mok's egotism and Toad's protectiveness, it's unlikely Mr. Lips was permitted to take Cinderella to the ball.

He's incapable of loving anyone but himself. It's pretty clear that Toad can't stand him, Mok knows that and likes to give him more of a reason to. Thanks. At the time we were doing this - 1979-1985 - traditional cel animation was at its zenith in terms of quality. We were shooting for "Disney" quality with adult stories - something that hadn't been done up to that point. I was actually going to work on the Heavy Metal film, which was being produced at the same time, when I got picked up for this. We even had Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnson, two of Disney's old men, working with us and the special effects were done by ILM who had just come off the first Star Wars film. It was a magical time. Classic Looney Tunes animation was hand-drawn and smoother than anything on TV today.

I grew up on Looney Tunes and love it to this day. It was all done by hand with animation done on 2's - that means that the film was running at 24 frames per second but we only had to animate every other one. During the 1990s TV transitioned to all-in-the-box digital. My production studio was the first to successfully conform the output from Flash, which had never been used for broadcast before, into a valid output for network distribution. It's taken off since then with virtually everything on TV being done in Flash today. It serves a purpose but loses a lot of the art that made it sparkle in the first place.

Absolutely. Another thing that's annoying is the whole CalArts style that's become ubiquitous in the past few years.

This is my own opinion, so please don't take offense, but I would strongly disagree with Angel being a best character. Mok is by far the pinnacle of the movie. (I am extremely biased, take my word for that.) Angel has a very nice character design and voice talent - that much, I agree with. She has a very streamlined appearance and a fitting voice double for Debbie. But, as far as her actual character goes... She's a stereotypical 80s blonde damsel in distress, with no real depth or character development beyond "hey uh I'm a mutant Debbie Harry, I'm cute, innocent (very out of place in their grungy post apocalyptic punk rock band) I have the special voice, sometimes I act a little bitchy" She's little more than a MacGyver - a plot element, with little to no context or real motivations given for her and her actions. Of course that applies to all of the other characters too, but I feel like it negatively affects her the most. I see what the creators were trying to do. They wanted to make a feminist role model, a female icon who stands up to the baddie and doesn't just sit around waiting for her knight in shining armor to rescue her. The more respectable and characteristic aspects of her personality show near the end of the movie (it makes sense, since the movie was made backwards) - her standing up against the demon was absolutely a power move, and it shows she's more than just some tiny woman but courageous against all odds. But... I feel the movie kind of detracts from Angel's boldness by making her get constantly kidnapped, drugged multiple times, and then sexualized against her will. And of course, making her this innocent, clueless, femme beauty. It's all a very antiquated view of feminism - she's a beautiful woman (because that matters) but make her a little bitchy and try to escape a few times, so she's a feminist. (And yes, I know she was animated by a woman, but this was also 1983.... And the movie was written by a lot of young, fresh out of college men.) I believe she would have benefited from being less angelic, and more of a filthy, grungy punk who fit in her ragtag band of rockers, gave Mok and anyone crossed her path a hard time - she stands up for herself before others, and she doesn't take shit from nobody. She doesn't hold Omar's hand and decide to fuck after a half assed apology - I don't know. My vision of her is just more realistic. But appreciate Rock & Rule as it is because we aren't gettin shit like this anymore. Unless we are

Nope. Was a Canadian production from Nelvana. They are probably best known for the Care Bears movie. You might also have spotted their work in The Three Amigos. They animated the horses lips to the campfire song. There is probably a couple of good reasons why you have never heard of the film. 1) It did very poorly at release and... 2) All the negatives were destroyed in a fire. All the copies today are from a VHS tape.

@@Orlor Thanks for the info. I remember many Nelvana shows in the 90's. Too bad about the negatives. Pretty much makes this a "lost" film. Many films that crap out at the vox office go on to become cult favorites. Sounds like this one.

I'm not sure this is correct. There was a DVD release done from restored film and I got a 3/4" tape version when I left the studio.

By the time the movie was done we were in the late 1980s when political correctness ruled the day so it didn't get the theatrical release it should have. A growing group of fans kept it alive on late-night TV and it is only now - almost 40 years later - that people are finally starting to take notice of it. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Care Bears and political correctness killed films like this. Rock & Rule started development in the 70s when creative freedom was the norm but came out mid 80s during the Reagan era that stifled free creative expression. It's taken this long for people to start noticing what's been going on.

the eighties were a strange time, The band Twisted Sister went to testify in senate hearings, at the time the U.S government deemed the band to be a bad influence on children and they hade to fight in court for the right to continue making their brand of music... weird!!!!

@@phoenixman8569 Rock & Rule is really a 70s film that got released in the 80s. The 70s were a fabulous time for creative endevours whereas the 80s saw the rise of political correctness which eschews outside-the-box thinking (to societies detriment IMHO).

Being able to play different parts so differently the audience can't tell is the sign of a great actor. That's why Meryl Streep is held in such high regard whereas actors like Arnold Schwarzenegger or Will Smith, who play the same character over and over again, get panned.

Thanks. I had a lot of fun with this one and John Celestri (Cindy animator) was fabulous to work with. I got some blank stares when I designed the transition using Cindy's skirt, but he did a great job implementing it. He also did a great job on the foreshortening of the sofa (when Cindy moves it under the grating) giving a real "in your face" feel to it.

Thanks so much. This sequence is technically known as "laying pipe," which is another way to say putting out back-story, which can get boring really fast. I was given a free hand in how the shots would cut together and John Celestri, the lead animator, did a fantastic job bringing it to life and turning a "boring" sequence into one of my faves. Glad you like it too.

Well, pretty much, Cindy is saying she’s a little old fashioned. Not very nice but it’s part of Mok’s character development as far has interests.

She’s kind of a country mouse, Mok seemingly prefers more fashionable women.

Everything was done optically. There was a lot of multiple passes, gels, back lighting, bi-packing and matte cutting going on. The only real 3D effects were those that appear on Mok's screens - those are the lawyer, accountant and etc. characters - and they were added using mattes and bi-packing the film. The wire frame and limited motion on the 3D was state-of-the-art for ILM at the time. Everything else is 2D - some of the sequences of the band playing were roto-scoped.

Verne Andru That’s a lot of work in order to show a scene. Very impressive all the effort put into the movie. My studio team and myself have been watching the movie plentifully to learn from it. We are hopeful something of similar quality can still be done traditionally. But still lots to learn from this type of movies.

It was a lot of work to do anything before computers came along. I'm glad you are interested in carrying on the high-quality 2D tradition as most animation these days is done in Flash or Maya. Most studios don't even have pencils anymore! If you're wanting to learn from those of us that worked in the field you better hurry up as my generation is retiring and there is no-one trained to carry on the craft.

Verne Andru That’s what I’m aiming for. To learn from those who know the craft. There is only 3 of us in the studio since others simply prefer digital. As for pencils that is true, it’s super hard to land an art profesor that teaches traditional animation first.

@@lexwolf8843 where are you located? I taught classical animation, storyboarding and comic book production at the Vancouver Film School a few years ago. I think they're still running those programs so there are people out there that can and do teach. Not many that got to where we did with Rock & Rule, but they cover the basics. There is push-back to teaching traditional because there are materials costs (like pencils and paper) that aren't needed for digital. Schools are always looking to cut costs. The other thing is that the real artists are busy drawing, not wasting time on the internet. It's not uncommon for a pro to work at the board for 10-12 hours a day, every day. Email and all the digital distractions don't allow digital artists the chance to really focus unless they unplug, which many just can't do. Most of my students were in their 20s so I saw it on a daily basis.

No idea. It languished for years and has all of a sudden has taken off. Go figure! It is coincidental with the COPPA stuff so now that it's set as not for kids, it might be getting more attention because it's definitely not for kids.

I don't mean to sound like a narcissistic egomaniac or anything (I do), but a part of me believes my own art has something to do with it. Maybe not a lot, but I'm a Rock & Rule based artist (primarily of Myself) intent on bringing more light to the movie and getting people interested. This was done by Nelvana while Ralph Bakshi did at least some of the Tolkien titles you mention. Perhaps there is a slight resemblance consistent with 2D animation of the day, background painting techniques were similar at all studios for example, but not much beyond that I would think.
