@@PhilZero When you need a break from TW, if that ever happens, take a look at the band Larkin Poe, another sister act that's been around in several forms since their teen years. This year their album "Blood Harmony" won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album. The call their genre "Roots Rock" and have a similar relationship with their fans, and stage presence, as TW. Their Rabbit hole, is 5 years deeper than TW, and started with 3 sisters playing Bluegrass, as the Lovell Sisters. When oldest sister Jessica left ( she preferred planning the logistics of tours, more than touring) for college, Megan and Rebecca, formed Larkin Poe ( their 4× great grandfather's name, who was a distant cousin to Edgar Allen Poe) and started their own sound. They soon discovered Blues, and went in that direction. They are multi instrumentalists, classically trained on piano (as are TW) and violin as pre schoolers. Rebecca plays Mandolin (award winning at age 14), banjo, guitar, and is lead singer, and primary writer, while Megan plays lap steel guitar, keyboard, and sings harmonies. For performing live, they have a bass player and drummer. Start with their 2023 performance on Rockpalast, with "Summertime Sunset",or " Preachin Blues", or their Sounds of the Road video of "Trouble in Mind" or "Ex-Con", Then go back to earlier stuff, like "Bleach Blonde Bottle Blues", and don't forget their 125+ stripped down covers, on their cover channel. You shouldn't be disappointed! 🤘😊👍

I was going to mention how big the bass is on the new album. Once you listen to the whole album you realize how powerful the bass is overall. Ale has some amazing bass lines in every song. I absolutely love the slides in a few of the songs, :30 seconds into Satisfied for example, so sick. Then the way she uses more sustain before the tempo and distortion changes in Escapism. Brilliant bass work.

Ale's bass really shines in this one, for sure. Even when Dany's voice cracked at the end, it somehow still enhanced the song. For me, this is the most beautiful song in The Warning's entire catalog. Kinda my interpretation, although I see it as a bit more sarcastic - something like, "Fine, if you want to be an idiot, at least own it and be the idiot freely without bitching about it." I think the idea from the singer's perspective is that eventually even your closest friends get sick of you complaining about how terrible your life is, and get sick of hearing about it.

Highly emotional performance of this song. You can hear Dany's voice crack with the feels at the ending high note. Pau was in tears during the song and remained emotional to the end of the concert. This was the first of their two encores. There were over 3000 people in the audience and every one of them was singing along! With all the crap they took from their critics pre-Narcisista, having a song, (their second Spanish language song) receive this kind of crowd reaction in their own country had to feel good. The crazy thing is, when they play this in other countries, the audience there sings along as well. They are teaching the world how to sing in Spanish, one song at a time. They say it's hard for them to compose in Spanish, (harder than doing it in English) which is why they only have three songs in their native language (so far). When they wrote these lyrics, they had their mother check it for grammar and proper word usage. Their latest song, Que Mas Quieres was originally composed in English but they felt it sounded better with the internal meter when they sang it in Spanish.

Apart from the outstanding vocals by Dany, and the cracking drumming by Pau, what caught my attention the most when I first started to listen to The Warning was Ale's bass work. If I had to say I had a favourite aspect of The Warning it's exactly that: Ale and her bass. In 50 years of listening to music it's the first time I've been so taken by the bass.

I mostly missed the boat on Foo Fighters and just listened to the Pretender recently after listening to the Warning do it a bunch of times. I like the Warning version better because you can really hear the bass. With two guitars the bass just gets buried in the Foo's version (at least the one I heard).
@Biomirth
@Biomirth 2 месяца назад
They consistently do a great job of bringing the bass forward in almost every song. It's truly part of their sound and how their able to surprise newcomers with how 'full' they sound. Also, they choose great bass tones and dynamics so that it truly becomes another voice in the mix. As Phil points out sometimes, it is the sophistication of their arrangement that is 'complex' rather than insane solos or high speeds. What is being shown off, other than the message of their songs and the artistry of their delivery is the depth to which they fine tune the sound of each song to perfection.

In Mexico, the word "martyrdom" is slang for something annoying or stressful. This song is for people who complain about their problems but don't try to fix them becoming a nuisance to others trying to play the martyr. It tells them they're the only ones who can change their situation. It's become a popular anthem for the band's Mexican fans, so they get really into it when they perform it. Also, a "torta" is NOT a sandwich! Tortas are made with special Mexican bread ("bolillo" or "telera") and are more like a French baguette or Italian ciabatta. Sandwiches are made with plain white bread. Great reaction!

@@PhilZeroI grew up in Texas and learned enough TexMex Spanish to get me fed, bred and killed. I went to a school district 51% Hispanic, 45% Caucasian and the rest a mix of southeast Asians. I stupidly studied Latin since learning school book Spanish didn't seem to be worth it since kids who already knew Spanish as first language would flunk it. We also had a middle aged woman who spoke limited English who lived in and took care of my little sister as my mother traveled for work. Missy spoke Spanish as her first words. I developed a deep love of cooking from central Mexico and fresh flour tortillas filled with fried potatoes sausage onions and peppers and scrambled eggs for breakfast. Really spoiled. I learned basic conversational phrases and words from talking with Maria. Later on dating a Mexican girl "learned" me other more useful phrases 😊. Now 5 decades later I have forgotten 95% of the Spanish I once knew. But they don't call it one of the Romance languages for nothing. I can figure out written Spanish a large percentage of the time but very little of it in songs as they are sung. But I love Spanish language songs. Cuban, Porto Rican, and all the other flavors of Spanish - even Castilian from Spain. Cuban is amazing because of the mix of African beats. Have a buddy from Argentina who exposed me to some of it. And of course living here in Austin you can't help but hear music of several genres daily. Can listen to it without anything but the most basic guess of what's going on and love it. So I really love the few songs from The Warning in Spanish- wish there more but I understand why they don't do more. English songs can do well everywhere on the globe. Spanish not so much. But I still wish there were more.

The Warning toured with Eruca Sativa a few years ago and Ale spent some extra time with Brenda Martin from that band. Brenda also plays a 5-string bass and has been known to rip out bass solos just like she was playing a lead guitar. Anyway, Brenda is one of the bass players Ale often mentions as a model for how to play. It would be interesting to hear the two of them having a jam session after Ale has had this many more years to practice.

I think that the emotion of playing this live in front of a primarily Spanish speaking audience and being one of their biggest headlining shows, to that point, was somewhat apparent. We see Pau displaying huge smiles throughout while being on the verge of tears simultaneously. Dany’s voice crack, which actually adds to the song, is very rare for her and I attribute it not only to the emotional element but also to playing for 2 hours in the elevation of Mexico City (CDMX). The only other time I’ve seen Dany’s voice crack during Martirio was when they played in Spain and Pau was also similarly emotional behind her kit. Elizabeth from TCV has commented that certain composers in classical music would include big vocal jumps in their works and it’s rarely present in other genres. You’ve been one of the few reactors who have mentioned it twice now during your reactions. Dany’s not to shabby of a vocalist…lol. Absolutely look forwards to your analysis/reactions. Keep up the great work.

My interpretation of the lyrics, particularly based on the first verse, is that it is about someone with a victim complex, that believes they are unjustly suffering and in the process perpetuating their condition.

Best reactor right now phil. So glad you know what you are talking about and you being a music nerd. We love the girls, we love The Warning, thanks for help them to explode and blast the world. You will not regret attending the warning show, they are pushing rock to cosmic proportions, already a cult band.

Great video as always! I’m glad you mentioned Ale’s work on those bass lines. Sadly bass is not always what people talk about, but Ale does have a great presence, and a massive bass tone. The three sisters really know how to combine their sound to make so great music!

What I understand from the lyrics of this song is that it is a call to those people who victimize themselves and hide behind saying that everything goes wrong for them and that they can't do anything because they are alone and without support and they martyr themselves saying that they are victims of their conditions, but the song makes the call to stand up and fight especially in the part that says "learn from those who suffered and if you have to live in fear it is better die in the hands of a goodbye" In a few words it could be interpreted like this: Are you going to drown in your problems and difficulties and accept that this is your destiny or are you going to get up and fight?

*grabs a chela, plays some Chente and sits next to Phil* Compa, let me take you down an even deeper rabbit hole. Ale's bass playing here, was the norm on the previous two albums. There's a reason so many metal heads and Rush fans fell in love with Queen of the Murder Scene. That album is filled with moments in which they all shine individually and together.

This was one of my favourites right off the bat and one of the very few songs that the video is better than the live version. I too am going to see them on the upcoming Canadian leg but in Kelowna. Saw them in Penticton a year ago … you will love them I do wish I could see them as the headliner… I been giving Spanish a go so maybe I’ll be lucky to see them on their home turf. Been a fan of theirs for some time, as an old fart growing up with 70’s rock these young ladies have managed to give me faith that rock isn’t dead. All of their new stuff is great but you owe it to yourself to give Queen of the Murder Scene a listen, I’m absolutely gobsmacked that such young musicians in this day and age wrote that album!

Yes' Chris Squire (RIP), John Entwistle (RIP) of The Who, Tal Wilkenfeld (plays with everybody, it seems), and Polish Jazz bassist, Kinga Głyk (has her own band) are other bassists in the same class as Ale. Ale often interplays as support with either Pau or Dany, or both, and occasionally inserts a perfect fill that sounds like a lead. I have no doubt she could play the bass as a lead instrument, even a solo instrument, if called to do so. I'd love to hear her write and perform her own composition where she plays lead on that five-string while singing lead.

Martirio in Spanish means "martyrdom" but also means a deep pain either physical or emotional, or a very difficult and hard task. This songs refers to the second definition: a deep emotional pain, but in this case self-inflicted. BTW didn't know you like tortas ahogadas. 🤤 They are a typical dish from Guadalajara. Cheers.

It’s a odd but emotional feeling to be singing along at a concert of The Warning and I sing all the words and don’t even know what exactly what they mean since I don’t speak the language. Never happened to me before Matirio was released. Love this song 🤘⚡️🤘

Martirio also translates to suffering... It's about someone (anyone?) finding themselves drowning in suffering, searching for a savior who never delivers and, ultimately gives the advice to learn from others who walked this path and accept that a ( likely painful) severance from this miserable path would be better than to continue on living in misery. Better a painful end than endless pain.

There sure are worse ways to get introduced to a band, eh? Binge away I say. Heck I just flew across the Atlantic to see them play three shows in the UK & Ireland. I mean, why the heck not. I am really enjoying your journey. There is no right or wrong way to learn about THe Warning. The key is to start SOMEWHERE. This has been their show closer in Mexico and South America. What a bloody good stadium anthem it is. In CDMX last fall, there were 8000 of us singing along at the end in full voice even though many of us can't speak any Spanish. The message gets conveyed in the feeling for sure. They have really hit something great with this song IMHO.

It wasn't my favorite song on the album either, but it grew on me over time, and now I even have handwritten lyrics from Pau for Martirio (Patreon reward). It's such an anthemic song with a lot of musical intricacies! Ale slays her bass lines 😎

They learned songwriting as a group: starting on piano and lyrics, then self arranging so it could be played as a band at the next meeting. Their instructor was also Ale's bass teacher, so she was doubly prepared to become an amazing bassist. I don't think you've reacted to anything from their second album, the phenomenal concept album "Queen of the Murder Scene", but Ale did such a incredible, mature job that it's almost impossible to believe she was only 13 when the album was released.

Not only Ale's stellar bass work but also her harmony vocals in the 2nd verse are downright soulful. And yes "en tu martirio ahogate" can mean "drown in your self-pity" which is a helluva line in any language. Besides, you can't have a Warning album without at least one "drowning" reference!🤘

Ale's bass is always there, in every song. but, many times only another bass player can really hear it. She can seamlessly blend into the song if it is what the song needs but she also shines outwardly in songs like Matirio. Ale is one of my bass idols.
