Kathleen Edwards' music has been described as something between Suzanne Vega and Neil Young. The 37 year old alt-country singer songwriter from Ottawa broke onto the scene in 2003 with her album Failer that included the songs Six O'Clock News and Hockey Skates. The daughter of a diplomat, Edwards travelled the world in her youth with stops in Korea and Switzerland. Both parents loved to listen to music and shared their enthusiasm with their children. Edwards studied violin as a child and when it came time to go to university she opted to take her guitar and her compositions and try to make her living playing music. By the time she was 21 she was managing her own tour across Canada and in 2003 she released the album Failer to critical acclaim. Edwards has since released three more albums, Back to Me, Asking for Flowers and Voyageur. She has toured extensively across North America and appeared on Late Night with David Letterman several times. Edwards continues to perform but has become much more selective since opening a café, Quitters, in the Ottawa suburb of Stittsville. Ken Rockburn spoke to Kathleen Edwards in Ottawa.

The best artists are often very open, sensitive and vulnerable people. Having those personality traits can probably make "ordinary life" rather difficult at times, but - when "channeled" the right way - (and combined with hard work) - those characteristics are also exactly what enables these people to create the amazing art that moves the rest of us.

I remember hearing a clip from "Failure" on a PBS radio show in the car on drive home from work one night. I bought the CD. I played it once. Then I played it again. And again and again. I probably listened to it 10 times over the next day, intently picking apart the songs and being in awe of how good she was. I haven't experienced that kind of focus and immersion in an album since I did that with the Beatles in the early 1970 as a teenager. This is a great interview. She is just plain genuinely sweet, nice, honest, and immensely talented. What's not to like?

Is she delightful or what? One of the best ever. Cusses like a sailor, but has a heart as delicate as a snowflake. Can communicate through a song like nobody's business.

Stephen Fearing is like that. He is very supportive, and personable. I missed his autograph on the first BARK album at Northern Lights, because he had to fly out for another show. Colin and Tom were there to sign. When they came to Ottawa, he invited me into the green room to add his signature and shake my hand. I was volunteering for OttawaFolk, though. So I had pull with the Committee. Northern lights was a full access pass which the festivals exchange regularly. So our volunteer coordinator and I were acting as representatives for our festival. But he is the perfect gentleman and a big supporter of new acts. Oh, yeah. I also got a pic of Colin Linden and myself, complements of our media person, at the time. That’s part of the fun of volunteering.

Thank-you for this wonderful interview! I "fell in love" with Kathleen when I first saw her open for Veda Hille in 1999 at the West End Cultural Centre in Winnipeg. I picked up a copy of "that EP" I loved how she spoke her mind and her determination. Over the years, her music has only gotten better. Although I was sad to see her take an indefinite break, I am pleased that she is following her heart and still carving her own path.

Great interview. Kathleen is such a down-to-earth person, so honest and open. Her music is a great gift and she seems that she can succeed in anything she puts her mind to whether it is music, making muffins, growing the garden she always wanted, etc.

As an amateur singer/songwriter wannabe and major fan of music I have recently become a huge fan of Kathleen’s work. This is a great interview with amazing insight and honesty.

Thanks for posting this. It is so "informal" and just honest seeming, like Kathleen's music. I saw her the last 2 times she was in DC/VA at the 930 club and Birchmere. I would guess about 1 yr apart. You could see some of the strain and emotion she discusses at the latter show. Still, the band left the stage and she played Mint (on her now stolen Les Paul) by herself, and it was like Neil Young crashing into Billy Bragg. Passionate and fun. Do whatever makes you happy Kathleen, you've earned it.

What a great interview. Kudos for this. I first heard about Edwards when she opened for Aimee Mann on a tour years ago.....bought her first album and have been a fan since and have greatly enjoyed every album she's released. I still play her music regularly. I saw her live in 2012 at the Haw River Ballroom in NC. My impression was that she was a great performer/player, down to earth and funny, and I also sensed that she was depressed. Not because she came across as "sad" - but rather that she was just so raw and real. For everyone who has been there (and that's everyone, right?) - you recognize it and you feel it. While I would welcome the opportunity to buy new records from her (on vinyl, like the last two), to echo what everyone else here has said in their own way, I'm glad she's marking her own path and doing what feels right. Wishing her all the best.

Thanks for the great interview and clarity it provides. Before watching it, I have been tempted (weekly/monthly) to write "An Open Letter to Kathleen Edwards" on our site in which I would sing the praises of her artistry and implore/cajole her to return to the studio and stage. While I (and many) will continue to desire to implore/cajole Kathleen to return, after watching the interview and hearing her thoughtful/eloquent words about these matters and the peace in which she seems to sit, I think it entirely too selfish of her fans/critics to do so. So glad to hear you are doing well Kathleen! Friends and I were members of an entirely-too-small ("Charlotte-esque") audience in Ventura, California in April 2012 who were the beneficiaries of a truly memorable performance despite the stupid crowd-size. At the time, the concert was emblematic of the old adage "The Show Must Go On!" and I thank you again for it. So come or go in peace Kathleen. We will be here if you need us.

Some of the most successful artists, when playing to an empty house, will give their best show. The people who were there talk about it, making others envious of having missed it. Eventually, it turns around to the point that people lie and boast that they were there.

Hard to imagine her not selling tickets. I remember when "Failure" came out and the reviews ... hard to live up to that hype, I suppose.

Really a great interview. Honest, complete answers and pointed, direct questions that keep the flow of the discourse moving forward in a natural way. Thank you for this. It was a pleasure to watch! Much love to Kathleen Edwards, and much respect to the interviewer.

I consider myself very knowledgeable about music ...but six months ago if you asked me who kathleen edwards was id go.....who??? I totally messed up on this pure talent .....believe me i know who she is now ...wow.. what a musical genius ...she is able to mix all forms of music to form her own genre ..now that is genius ...this girl is great ..intellegent..and a great songstress...she so honest with why she slowed down thinking that her popularity was waning but she is just getting started i know shes been around awhile ..her success will grow once she concentrates on a total u.s. tour ...canada is nice but you must play the U.S. almost exclusively for awhile ...to become world renowned..kathleen you go girl ..the world is watching ...

We saw the Wailin Jennies here (Nashville, City Winery) not too long ago and I thought "These ladies, this band is really NICE" my partner was so happy to be here and I was happy for her, but all I kept thinking was "This is the best soccer mom band I've ever heard" but then I wanted to hear Kathleen.. the essence of Canada and the great outdorrs.. The music that lives in me.. I keep looking for her to appear here in Music City but I don't have much hope.. I don't think there's enough interest in the beauty of the writing and it looks like she isn't interested in being here... It's surely our loss (at least MY loss) but I'll be there if she ever shows up... Thanks Kathleen for the beautiful music...

"It's showtime" . . . Bob Fosse, played by Roy Scheider in the 1979 film, "All That Jazz." The character's name in the film was Joe Gideon.

I wondered why she quit the business. I am sad about that but I understand. She has some great tunes and voice. I think her violin in goodnight california was the best. But performers gotta sell tickets to the show, and that was lacking. She will be missed but I understand her angst.
