It was a real challenge trying to edit this due to the chaotic beats. I tried my best to keep it a cohesive listening experience. For those dying for the uncut version, my Patreon is only $2/month (link in description). Cheers, y'all 🍻
React to xxxtentacion he was a great young artist, his last album he made when he was alive is the album titled question mark or just ?. Give it a listen
The "you think you know me" line scattered throughout the album is one of his producer tags (along with "daaamn Peggy"). Peggy fully produces, mixes, and masters all of his music
I saw Peggy perform for maybe 5 of us in a DIY venue in LA right before They Hate Change and Clipping. I was somewhat familiar with his early stuff but all of us were very confused when he jumped in our faces. Crazy that a year later he was selling out venues around the world.
That voice thing in “Real N*ga” is a wu tang sample! The member Ol Dirty Bastard, on one of his solo songs, started the song with that, but Jpegmafia looped it at the almost-scream part, and made a song around it, while ODB just did it acapella randomly, then moved on. The chorus of Rainbow Six is great and always makes me want to turn the volume all the way up. The Travis Scott part is a sample. I love this album but his next album All My Heroes Are Cornballs is my favorite of his
@@bobthepoppop it was genius to even think of sampling it in Real N*ga! By the way, Wu Tang are almost certainly a group youd love to do the albums in order after hearing their debut 36 chambers. When it comes to their discography, it includes both group albums and solo albums by the 9 members, and the first 7 albums all are considered classic after classic, a really incredible line of albums. Those albums were Wu Tang - Enter the 36 Chambers Method Man - Tical Ol Dirty Bastard - Return to the 36 Chambers Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx GZA - Liquid Swords Ghostface Killah - Ironman Wu Tang - Wu Tang Forever. All 7 are great, but after hearing 36 Chambers im sure you wouldnt need any convincing at all to hear more of them. But though they have many incredible albums, Enter The 36 Chambers, where it all began, is still their ultimate best
@@dylangrieb5986 even though it was genius, wasn't peggy's idea. check out chef warren's track by the same name, released years before peggy made the track
I like to describe jpegmafia's music as anxiety that's induced by my adhd. It's like constant different stimulus and sounds and ideas all at once, but they all fit together somehow and it just makes sense in my brain
I made that same analogy to myself while listening to this album for the first time. I have adhd, and I was like “this is literally just adhd in music form” which is probably why I love it so much
Dude, his sound is always "coming a long way". The evolution of this guy from album to album is really something. I don't know if non-artists really appreciate how awesome it is when someone is able to channel that and portray it through the gestalt of the art... just the way that it exists lets you know there is a growing, changing soul perpetuating it. I feel like I've taken the journey with him and it gives me a feeling that very few artists today do. And that is the desire to create something NEW... something ME. Take the time to make it different, put in all of those details I think people will think are weird. Concentrate your pathos and your ethos, let it drive what you make and what you choose to put out. Own it, and be good as hell at it. So good nobody can really question it anymore. Nobody ever seems to come at him for the quality of his art, even when they're basically dismantling him as an artist. More often they go for his takes. I find that pretty interesting. This is what he has always done as an artist. Jpegmafia gets the ultimate respect in this game for being a real artist before literally everything else in his music. And you absolutely hear that in every new release he has ever put out. There's always something new and different on there. It sounds chaotic at times but I have little doubt that it's not obsessively refined.
The Travis Scott section of Williamsburg is actually just a sample of one of Travis's most popular songs, butterfly effect. Peggy was much to small of an artist to have a feature from someone like Travis on this album
Glad you are doing so many experimental rap albums, theyre so great! Cannot wait for graduation next week, you’re gonna hear a whole different Kanye as usual lol
You should listen to Injury Reserve's By the Time I Get to Phoenix. It's some of the most unique, groundbreaking hip-hop albums I've ever heard. It's really pushing the boundaries of hip-hop. They were a rap trio composed of 2 emcees, Ritchie with a T; Stepa J. Groggs, and 1 producer, Parker Corey until June 2020 when Groggs unexpectedly passed away. Despite this album being mostly completed before he passed, and most lyrical content based on the death of Ritchie with a T's stepfather, it's still a haunting listen. It's a beautiful album full of aggression, pain, but hope.
This one is popping up a lot lately, and it's quickly crawling toward the top of my list. Everyone that mentions it seems to hold it in very high regard, and that's always a draw for me
I would heavily suggest listening to “All My Heroes are Cornballs” before moving into LP! It’s a fantastic listen and I would like to see your opinion about the album’s regarding ones heroes. I just finished watching your tpab additional thoughts, and it kinda ties into your talk regarding one’s heroes. It’s a must listen!
YESSSSS I TOLD U !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! his album after this, all my heroes are cornballs, is my favorite album ever tied with LP!. hope u like them they are literal perfect masterpieces as well. every new project his sound evolves amazingly, and the fact he entirely produces, arranges, and engineers all his work is just unreal!
As someone who delves deep into lyrics and likes deciphering the meaning of certain verses please react to Earl, Billy woods (or Armand Hammer), KA, and RAP Ferreira! There’s definitely a lot to chew on when it comes to their work and I think you would appreciate their writing!
yeah bob if you're reading this, Hiding Places by Billy woods or Purple Moonlight pages by RAP ferreira are relatively recent releases that are great jumping in points
Completely agree! As far as billy woods and Armand Hammer, i think Armand Hammer’s Haram would be a perfect album. Such great lyrics and sound. And billy woods and Moor Mother’s collab album BRASS would be amazing to see on here too
Finally, great to see a comment mentioning these guys get a high number of votes! I'm sure Earl will happen eventually cz he's on another tier of fame than the other dudes, but I just need to see Bob talk about woods. Ka and Rory are great suggestions too, all these artists are just a little more on the up-and-coming side of things compared to most of the suggestions on here. But when I saw that he likes delving into the lyrics, I thought of them all immediately. Haram, BRASS or Hiding Places would be great places to start.
BOB!! Blonde meets death grips is a brilliant, genius comparison and makes so much sense! I love that the arsenal of hip hop you are accumulating is paying off in such a rewarding way! And it's funny to think about Frank Ocean and Death Grips in a collaborative way, because essentially it gives birth to an artist like Tyler. And Frank Ocean is Tyler's old close friend, real life bro, and musical teammate in Odd Future (Wolf Gang Kill Them All) its trippy to think about! Listen to Kanyes Graduation with Headphones ON cause its such a musical Rollercoaster, with such epic heights that it's my favorite Kanye Album- it's so thematically epic!
Holy shit I’m so excited for this. All of the more classic reactions have been great and also stuff like Kendrick has been fantastic but Peggy is the kind of contemporary sounds that get me super hyped today!! Glad to see you doing this album bob!!!
What makes Peggy truly a unique and special artist is that he also produces and mixes all these seemingly unrappable beats, he's also extremely humble and kind in-person. I love him very much. Ghost Pop Tape is worth checking out considering when it came out and how early on he was creating a sound that is distinctly his.
Love watching first listens to this album. I got into Peggy back in 2016 with his albums “Black Ben Carson” and “The 2nd Amendment” but he really clicked with me the first time I heard this album. Brings me back to early 2018!
Been binging your reactions all day and I think this is your best one so far. The way you’re able to pick up on the song structures and lyrical meaning in just one go is incredible. Not to mention being able to appreciate new sounds and vocals is amazing. Your getting better and better with each review and I can’t wait to watch what you put out next. I would recommend continuing with JPEGMAFIA’S discography it’s all good and you seem to like it.
the voice used in the beat on the 2nd track samples old dirty bastard, member of rap group wu tang clan also, the travis scott "feature" on williamsburg is a sample too.
Peggy is such a mensch. I saw this man back in 2018 in Philly and after his show he waited and took pics with everyone who wanted to meet up after the show.
seeing your reaction made me wish i could listen to veteran for the first time again. i hope you give all my heroes are cornballs and LP! a listen too!
Dude, honestly... this may have been my favorite "initial experience" with an album so far. It's hard to make that call because so many of these albums have been very different from each other, but this was like the perfect blend of... everything
I've briefly met Peggy twice - once after a show in Columbus Ohio and once after a show at The Agora Cleveland in 2023. He was genuinely the most humble, kind and joyful artist I have ever met. I asked him to sign my black Playstation 2 memory card and he had a hearty laugh from it.
I have loved the journey you’ve done through hip-hop I started watching from yeezus and watched every vid since!!! You’re thoughts on music and life in general are great to hear! I would love to recommend run the jewels especially 2,3, and 4. Keep up the great vids!!!
Dude, that's so awesome. I wonder sometimes how many people have been along for this journey vs. those that just check out the albums they like. Run the Jewels is on my list, but they're not quite to the top yet.
you might enjoy "iridescence" by brockhampton, it's this industrial rap album that took a pretty large step away from the bands original sound with the departure of one of the members from their first three albums (you might like those too!)
Peggy’s one of my favorites of all time. His new album LP! is probably my favorite by him, it’s kinda like a culmination of all his music. You should listen to it, you would need to listen to the offline version on SoundCloud or RU-vid tho.
The "Real Nega" sample is Goin Down - Ol Dirty Bastard, one of my fav starts to a song ever I remember I used to compete during recess to see who could do that voice stretch the longest without using your full voice lol
I interpreted "blood on my money" as potentially also referring to his feelings on his military service, with the "no stains" being a bit of a contradiction in that he'd like to think of himself & present himself as being faultless, when he might not necessarily feel that way deep down.
Hi bob, love what youre doing. While LP! is his latest and we can say his most polished work, I'd like for you to review All My Heroes Are Cornballs first. It's his start in getting into way more RnB inspired sounds. It's after veteran. Thanks!
"turned your house into a home"=Hip hop stole rock's temporary place as the 'cool' music and has permanently(?) fixed itself among the most popular genres of music
Hey man, I discovered your videos a couple of days ago and I really love your reactions! It's rare to find a reaction channel that pays so much attention to the lyrics. Also, I think its pretty commendable that your willing to step out of your comfort zone and listen to stuff like this. Knowing that you're a rock fan, you should ABSOLUTELY react to the band "Lightning Bolt". They're basically the musical version of a headache, but in a really good way, I think you'll really enjoy them! I would personally suggest either their third full length "Hypermagic Mountain" or the follow up "Earthly Delights". Both classic records although Hypermagic Mountain is considered to be their magnum opus.
Another comment mentioned the Beyerdyanmics 770, 880, 990's which I highly recommend, I have the 770's, a bit more bass being closed backed! I also recommend the AKG K240's, I've had them longer and wear them daily, it's difficult to state which have more space for your ears, but I can wear my K240's longer with no fatigue personally. Loved your reaction, can't wait to catch more, PopPop!
Loved this reaction and listen ! Probably my favorite one you’ve done so far. It’s inspiring to see you keep pushing your music knowledge into these more experimental albums and artists. Keep doing gods work
Not sure if you’ll see this at this point, or if it even matters, but 11:00 pressed just means “angry” so when you’re not pressed, you don’t care, you’re not angry, you’re not letting it bother you etc.
Holy fucking god I never expected this. I’m so so so so happy you did this. Jpeg is one of the most creative and under appreciated artists in the game rn
It’s great to see you pick up on the parallels between Peggy and Frank Ocean, Death Grips, and Aphex Twin. It’s also hilarious to see you go into the Genius annotations only to go “fuck that I don’t agree”. Welcome to being a modern rap fan LOL. Real Nega samples the vocals of the legendary Ol Dirty Bastard. He was a member of Wu Tang Clan and is a pioneer of alternative hip hop and a huge influence on experimental sounds in rap, especially for Danny Brown who I’m also super hyped for you to check out. This album contains a lot of themes of anxiety and PTSD which can relate to both his experience in the military and his experience dealing with growing up on the internet. Many of the instrumentals are warped digital messes sampling obscure RU-vid clips and containing references to memes caught mainly by the terminally online. You can really feel that despair on tracks like Rainbow Six and Panic Emoji. I thought Peggy perfectly captured the relationship between braggadocio in rap while covering up the pain underneath, as well as trolling the alt right while still feeling hurt by all the racism and hate they put forth. These are brazen attitudes cut in hostility. But you can tell especially in his interviews (check out his latest one with Nardwuar) that he’s a thoughtful, sensitive dude. I don’t think his aggression is necessarily a front, but I do think it’s a product of his environment. It’s sadly relatable as a response to ennui of the social media age. ALSO I should add the “you think you know me” sample throughout the album is from pro wrestler Edge’s theme music, which was produced by Jim Johnston. I’m not sure if that’s the true origin of the sample, but that’s definitely where it was popularized. JPEGMAFIA’s music contains many references to wrestling, and he’s actually gotten involved with a new company All Elite Wrestling, appearing in some vignettes with Darby Allin. The hip-hop/wrestling connection is absolutely booming right now with Peggy, Griselda Records, and Wale (just to name a few) rapping about it all the time.
On Thug Tears, that “I done cried so many times” line makes me think that the final “I’ll make a * cry for himself” is actually him talking about himself. The first couple times listening I’m assuming he just meant the guy he’s committing this violence on. But now I wonder if the thug tears are shed by him.
You listening to peggy is unexpected, but it makes me excited that your reacting to sort of newer albums, you definitely have to listen to TA13OO by Denzel Curry, it came out the same year as this album and peggy even features in one of the tracks
It looks like you're on a modern/expermiental hip-hop wave rn, but I think a reaction to Black On Both Sides by Mos Def would be great. Lyrically its one of the best rap records of all time and the production has aged so well it's hard to tell that it's from the 90s. The album is like a time capsule back to 1999 and reflects on the past few centuries while discussing the dark future Mos Def predicts in the album. its really great and since your a lyrics guy I think you could get a lot out of it. Love the vids, keep it up
I love that u reacted to this. Honestly one of my favorite albums ever, easily his best so far imo. You gotta listen to Death Grips - The Powers that B. Considering you love Aphex Twin, you would love the first half of that album (I think it's the best thing they've done).
other people will have probably pointed this out but “you think you know me” is peggy’s ‘producer tag.’ it’s a pretty common thing in hip hop, another example being “wake up f1lthy” on whole lotta red. peggy produces basically everything on here!
Super cool to see your reaction with your perspective! A lot of fun for me. Probably already been called out but the vocal on track 2 is an Ol’ Dirty Bastard (Wu Tang Clan) sample, I think fantastically used here. I listened to Third Eye which definitely bears resemblance!
Wow, that dedication to making the video is going to help your channel grow. 5am haha! Also it was such a nice surprise to see you react to this, I love JPEG. Can’t wait for your reaction to All My Heroes are Cornballs, that might actually be my favourite of his but it’s definitely a departure from this record, all I can really say is it feels a lot more colourful. Great video as always! Happy New Year!
The DT 770 Pros are really good for larger ears, and sound amazing. They're closed back. They're my personal preference but they sell others of a similar build but are open and such. Fun stuff. Edit: Ah saw you ordered them already. Great purchase!
you should check out "vegyn - only diamonds cut diamonds" if you have not listened to that before. he does a lot of production for frank ocean, and hes worked with peggy and travis scott before. he has a song with peggy on that project and the production throughout is incredible, i think you'd like it.
I'm a rocker too. I like "BALD!" and "Real Nega". I saw him live without knowing any songs and got my old gen-x ass in a good mosh pit. Not bad, kids. Jpegmafia needs to be louder though. I didn't feel that "bump" in my chest like at rock shows. He is killing it by himself other than that man
At 13:20 when you said "Its so haphazard and wonderful..." Peggy put put a song last year called "HAZARD DUTY PAY" thats only on youtube- he sampled Anita Baker for it but unfortunately couldn't get the sample cleared for streaming services definitely worth a listen when you review LP!!
the loop from track #2 is the rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard from Wu-Tang Clan belting, not sure where the clip is from, but you should listen to Ol' Dirty some time. That dude was an absolute maniac on and off the mic and had a flow like no other
Travis Scott also wasn't a feature and surely didn't know about Peggy when this album was being produced, it was a sample Peggy used off the popular single Butterfly Effect
