We are Jim and Jessica, a husband and wife team who made the leap from city life to an off-grid homestead in Southern Arizona. We've started this lifestyle equipped only with two Permaculture Design Certificates and a whole lot of determination.
We’d like to share our journey of starting a sustainable homestead from scratch with all its ups, downs, and lessons learned. Watch us take on the challenge of modern homesteading, off-grid life, and turning this barren piece of land into a desert oasis.

This is the most unique home build on uTube that I have seen. Everything is so strange -everything. The wondrously beautiful landscape, the furry dogs from colder climes, the growing pits, the obsession with water so strong that I find myself cheering when there is extra going into the underground tank and the whole bag house thing and the that - peculiar mass heater. You are so doggedly persistent that I feel an ache of worry for you if things fail. You are two amazing people following their dream. I’m with you and wishing you all the best.

Hey Jim, you sure got Jess’s attention on that. Woo hooo oh yeahhhhh😂😂😂. Little reminder stay away from fumes that those cans let off. They’re very carcinogenic until all paint is removed. If I’m not mistaken that’s an imron paint The health hazards (permanent brain, liver and lung damage) are serious, and require professional level protection against lung and skin Be very careful little brother

now your doing it . dont know why you wanted to cut a hole in the top of the barrel . its going to be way better sealed and hold more heat kinda lol . i say kinda cause its going to push and pull air so the heat will move threw it as well . where your main heat will come from is the storage of heat in the mass you build be it a couch like bench of sorts or what ever . i see alot of people who have put up videos use tiny pea gravel and others use a mix of both pea and larger stones . i really think the mix of both is better . but i cant really say as i have never seen or built one . but it would make sense that a large stone will hold heat longer . but it might not matter once its all sealed in . ether way its going to be nice on cold days and fun to play with . your main problem is going to be where are you going to get fuel from . i guess old pallets and brush . maybe you can find a way to use wood pellets . or maybe you know what your going to use and will share your ideas with us at some point . but what ever it is it is not going to be very easy to get . you wont be able to depend on fuel from your land . you might be able to make a oil burner and get used cooking grease from local restaurants but thats kinda dangerous and messy . i just dont see how your going to make this work long term with out sourcing out side help with fuel .

Back in 60, we built a house on pea gravel. The plenum, and tiles were set and buried in the pea gravel. Then reinforced concrete over it all. The gas furnace heated our foundation and floors, as well as the rooms. Floors were heating the room, after the furnace shut off. Pea gravel is great, because it settles the least, under concrete, and for heating purposes.
