That was cheaper than in selsey the other week , the big site there it was 1.85 for a 2 pint as I went in and looked ! Your place was 1.50 for 2 pints. Luckily there is an Asda just up the road so everyone stocks up there if renting a caravan 👍
Full respect gareth for showing us these disgraceful rip off prices im 53 now and i despair at the state of the economy , 75 quid for a pitch is mind blowing !!
It's the insurance and indemnity costs for a powered site. Not just the utilities. Unfortunately people bring their stupidity along with them while on holidays. Unintended accidents do happen and someone always has to foot the bill. £75 is a lot but justifiable. Remember these people don't make much income off season, but rates and costs still rise regardless.
Same as having to buy Gluten-free & Lactose-free products. Think of a number then double it, no matter which supermarket0 you go to. They’ve got you - you HAVE to buy if so you HAVE to pay for it.
@@europainvicta3907Indeed. Who’d have thunk that cutting yourself off from your nearest market would increase prices? It’s almost as if it’s by design…
No it's not rip off Britain. It's Brexit, war in Ukraine, climate change affecting food production, massive hikes in energy/oil prices all fuelling huge increases in inflation. It's happening all around the world.
@@MrHennity No we did not and never will. It is half-hearted. Also the prices in Europe are much higher than they were. Inflation is not restricted to the UK. But supermarkets are renowned for Greedflation nowadays.
I remember caravan holidays at Clacton in the 1970s. Parents used to throw all their small change into a sweet jar during the year, So we could play the slots at the caravan site. Mother spent hours playing bingo. She sat at a stall sliding little doors to cover over the numbers as they were called. Having to walk through loads of other caravans to get to the beach. Happy days. 🙂
I was born during the great freeze of 1963 in Clacton. When I was a young teen my friend & I use to while away the hours at weekends playing bingo & the shove penny machines, I always went home with more money than I went with but my friend would spend all hers..great memories. I lived in Clacton all my life until I got married in my twenties & moved out with just the occasional visit to my parents home until they passed away, I haven’t been back for years now.
@@sallybutton6237 I used to raid my fathers National Milk tins in his shed. For washers for the penny slot machines. When the Fun Fair arrived at our local rec every year.
We had a static caravan in Anglesey, happy days. We had it for seven years, then we moved onto a towing caravan. We also had a towing fold out tent, with a proper gas cooker top, sink, water stillage, lights, gas fire, A Conway Colt Deluxe, it was brilliant. Good times. Glad you're having a break. We used to pitch the tent and it cost us 75 quid for the whole week, not a night.
Site shops have always been expensive. When I was a child, part of the luggage for the family holiday was a bag of groceries, mostly canned food because you didn’t get fridges. As you say, captive audience, but you have to factor that in as part of the cost of the holiday.
@@stevewhitcher6719 So did my Mum. I loved the canned food. Mum was not a great cook, so the canned versions were like eating exotic, foreign food because we were on holiday!
Alternatively, you could always get your shopping delivered by your chosen supermarket. During the summer months, I spend a lot of time delivering on a lot of holiday parks, in and around the lakes, so it certainly is an option 👍 By the looks, it would save a small fortune
Excellent vlog- recommend watching this video 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙌 There’s something nostalgic about a caravan holiday.did a few weeks every summer, from a small girl in the seventies and eighties and it continued for years. A tradition. Best advice is to bring what you need.make a list and plan.paying extortionate amounts of money there just means less to spend on enjoyment. You are having a nice break with your family, nice for you all .
Always been the same with on site shops at these places. Best to go prepared. A basket of essential items in the shop at Pontins Southport costs more than the holiday itself/
Glad your having a nice break. We always take Coffee cereal and milk and always make a Lasagne to take for first night the prices are ridiculous but as you say you always forget something.
I wouldn't be happy paying £75 a pitch a tent if it was windy and raining 😠 Come to think about it I wouldn't be happy even if it was was hot and sunny at that price😂. I'm not a fan of using communal showers and toilets to be honest it's just not me to get in a queue to have a wash lol.. A caravan/holiday home is completely different because it's got everything you need and comfort indoors. I stayed at the premier Inn 2-weeks ago and it cost me £39 for the night and I had a nice big double bed smart TV on the wall tea and coffee facilities and an ensuite bathroom. £75 for a tent I don't think so 😉
When I go shopping here in the US everything has gotten expensive as well. Eggs, milk, bread, pasta. I don't mind paying if it is quality, but even store brands are outrageous. I bought a burger meal at a favourite market for $25. This is supposed to be for four. Many families spend $200+ PER week. Even I could spend that much, but being only one, it would last about two weeks, give or take. Glad you are enjoying your holiday.
I work in the supermarket industry Gareth I am a baker in Morrisons Hamilton Scotland I have been for well over 18 years now the prices of goods has went through the roof we have a department for people to get food for nothing for the local community which is very commendable that's the situation we are in unfortunatly .
Top tip bud (been to many Haven sites for 15 years!). Save yourself the hassle of taking loads of food and drink with you and order an online delivery to your caravan from Tesco, Asda etc. We always do. Means you can get a full shop delivered to your van for your whole stay. And plenty cheap drink!! 😊
Hi, thank you for showing us around the site and respecting other people’s privacy not everybody thinks like you. As you said high prices but then again not a lot of choice so I suppose it is a case of take it or leave it. Hope you and your family enjoyed your time away. Take care and stay safe.
Hey BFG, prices down here are pretty much the same as those at your park, BUT, as for stocking up, better had, cos it ain’t gonna get any better, did you know that their are 13 countries signed upto deliberately cause a worldwide famine! Also India has just stopped the export of all rice, except basmati, not because of shortage, but to help their inflation, so the locals can afford to eat.
We usually stop at a supermarket on the way, but I've also done an online order and had it delivered to the site. Just put in the hours for the driver to ring you for your van number, or meet them at the gates.
No Gaz! if you go to camp sites, find the nearest supermarket outside of the camp. Prestatyn has Tesco etc. We like the place so much that we moved here (not the camp but the town)
I work crazy long shifts in a Nursing Home . Sometimes to tired to cook or plan ahead . My local small shop is charging way too much . Can of soup £1.20 ? 😮 I need to be more organized . Thanks for the video ❤
In our local Herons shop, all Heinz soups (400g) are £1.70! Never is a million years would I pay that for a tin of soup. Just hope that these shops and supermarkets find that people just will NOT pay silly prices and that they will have to throw out stock every day.
Less than 12 hours that you so kindly posted your clip and less than 12 hours that I’m committing and I must be the 700th person up to date to leave a comment. Shows how popular you are with keeping us up to date with prices and taste. A house full of woman just like my grandad was, as ive mentioned before.
Me and my friend do caravan holidays. Before we go we google to find the nearest supermarket. Then go to the shop on the way to the site. Saves a lot! ❤
When we go away we find the closest supermarkets and stock up or we get a supermarket delivery. To the holiday house we stay at. It's just nice being away I do love caravans ❤
I am increasingly wondering why alcohol doesnt seem to be affected by the same overheads every other food and drink supplier is using as an excuse for prices. Strange that. Surely liquid in glass bottles costs more to transport than bread, but not subject to the same price increases.
@@pheart2381 That's because alcohol is not a necessity and people will stop buying it if the price goes too high, unlike food, electric, gas and fuel, where nobody has a choice. If alcohol went up like food or electric and gas, all the pubs would shut down, by the way its sort of happening even now, a lot of pubs closing every week.
Absolutely brilliant review again Gaz, you all deserve the break and glad you all enjoyed sonshine, also I thought the little bunny you saw was a treat 🫢🐰xx
It's the same in the "kiosks" (corner shops) in Germany. In the smaller areas, nothing opens on Sundays, so if you forget to buy bread, milk, or drinks be prepared to pay at least double.
Oh, yes indeed! When I lived in Cologne, Germany in the 1970s you could only buy basic food items on a Sunday by making a special trip to the main railway station in the city centre. Nothing else was open.
If you are near Zurich and want to do a big shop on a Sunday jump on a tram/train to the Migros at the airport. Normal prices and a good range. Airports can be an option for any country with daft Sunday trading laws.
Ive always loved caravan holidays and I’m going on a short break in September and I can’t wait but I also will be prepared like last year I took a cool bag with sausage bacon egg’s bread and milk cheese ECT…glad you enjoyed your break
My sister says that about the co op that they've got a captive audience, she will go on to say that they've got all the pensioners because they can't get about to town as well. They've also got all the shop lifters too, they're prolific near us and at my local aldi. They always go for the meat. 🍖
Totally agree about co-op. My old flat was next to a co-op and it was always busy no matter what time of day. People don't want to travel to Tesco,Asda etc. Me I will go anywhere to save
I have been to the same site a couple of years ago. I went to the Asda in Barrow for our weekly shopping. The shop and the chippy is expensive. There’s a chippy in the village. Not too far away which was more reasonable. I’m at the Filey site at the moment. Prices here are pretty much the same. Enjoy your holiday 👍
You are so right …a captive market ..I live in Jersey so we are held to ransom ! Those are our normal prices …people are suffering here along with rest of UK with household basics , plus we pay an extra 5% on top !
Gareth, as the saying goes. 'Make Hay While The Sun Shines' is what those businesses do while they can. Off season is dismal for income! Indemnity insurance costs are through the roof, that's why it's not cheap to stay at some holiday parks and recreation areas anymore. Plus the utilities and council rates are choking businesses to the point of collapse. Yes best come prepared when and where you can. Buy before, or you'll Pay later! But what a lovely area you have at your disposal. No shortage of oxygen being sucked up by hordes of tourists. Just relax and enjoy 👍😀 All the best to wife and lipy nippers. Cheers.
Though we haven't done static caravan site for few years now, we always stocked up before we went as we realised quite early on that the onsite supermarkets were a rip off🤦♂️
Great video. I remember caravan hols with mum, dad and sister. It was the good old days with gas lamps in the caravan. I always felt "comfort" with the smell of them, ha ha! We went to Saundersfoot in a three-wheeler! If I remember rightly Dad had a motorbike before and you could drive three-wheelers without having to pay for a driving licence. I just remember the steep roads in Wales and my dad probably wondering if we'd make them with luggage etc. I love your videos of the village scenery when you share them with us.
@@stuartpace6111 Cravendale is sold in litres. I get the 2l which tends to vary in price from £2.30 - £2:45 in supermarkets or on offer 2 for £4. Started buying it as I was finding regular supermarket milk going off long before the date was due
I know that a lot of people are struggling with the price of food but if you compare the price of food when I was a kid and the average wage when I was a kid with now I'm pretty sure that food was more expensive then than it is now. I remember when Lidl first came to the U.K and absolutely nobody could work out how they could be selling things that cheap but then we kind of got used to it. From my personal perspective I have reacted to the hike in prices by being more careful what I buy and trying not to waste food which has offset the shock of the increases but I realise that there are plenty who didn't have the option to be so wasteful in the first place.
Every year more or less I go to one of these caravan parks. Mostly Parkdean, but the shop prices are the same. Rule No. 1, buy most of what you need in the nearest major supermarket. Use the on-site shop for basics only.
The onsite shops are usually run as a concession so the shop operator has to pay a hefty fee to the site owners hence the higher prices and yes they are relying on you forgetting things before you travel
I would never use a holiday camp supermarket....only for emergency items......track down the local Lidl or other local supermarket ....if you can buy things beforehand....so you have something to eat and drink when you arrive....milk, tea coffee, bread etc....i know not everyone has a car so could be difficult....but maybe arrange an on line shop for when you get there x
Yeah it would be nice if they did Local farm produce in the Store there to support the Local Farmers but it's all brand names at inflated prices.Nice to get away for a break though Mate.Hope You and the Family enjoyed it Gaz
I like that the pool was completely empty at the end of July when it is the worst weather we've ever had in the UK lol, and all we hear about is how hot the rest of the world is!
I can't comment on the caravan park shop but our little estate shop is really struggling. They're not profiteering, they're just struggling with increased energy bills, increased prices at the Cash & Carry, increased business rates and rent, increased insurance. A few months ago they were robbed and the milk fridge died. That cost them over three grand. A lot of people grumble about the prices in comparison to supermarkets but supermarkets benefit from economy of scale, holding the producers' feet to the fire etc. My estate shop is barely breaking even. Supermarkets profits are HUGE. The estate shop delivers to the elderly and disabled and if it folds, a valuable community resource will disappear.
Last time we went on a caravan holiday we found the nearest town and did our shop at the local Lidl.. saved us a fortune, the shops on site are a rip off.
Pleased you had a good time. It looks a nice place. Expensive for a tent, wow. All the shops at holiday destinations are expensive as you say they know you will pay, lot of time you dont have a choice as yoj say they got you. These places are mega expensive now with all the price increases in your normal supermarket then these places add even more. I dont know where we are going with it all apart from up up and up. 😢
Your right Gaz, the site shop has its own prices and if you find your self short of something you go to the site shop and take it right up where the sun don’t shine unfortunately, it’s not the price of the shop product as such it’s the price of desperation and they absolutely know it … but hey it’s holiday and they want your spending money unfortunately. Great content and something different 👍👍
This reminds me of supermarkets (and fuel prices) at M-way Service Stations. Captive audience. However, I live next to an Aldi, also opposite a Co-Op Petrol Station. The price differences are astronomical! The cheapest bottle of own brand wine is £6.50, in the latter. The only advantage, is that you rarely have to queue! 😉😉
We often book a few nights usually midweek breaks at these holiday parks as they are often low price and the caravans are fairly well equipped. BUT, we only use it as a base to visit the local National Trusts or English Heritage properties! We do not use the clubhouse, or any of the entertainment, we take our own food or buy it at the nearest supermarket. A great way to explore new areas and much cheaper than a hotel. We're a senior couple. Do not use the onsite shop!!
The point is you don't have to pay the prices. Take food with you and use the place as a base. We did Haven quite a few times with the kids. The entertainment is rubbish and cleanliness is suspect but we had days out in the car everyday. You don't have to get ripped off.
I know what you mean, ive been taking my family on uk caravan holidays for the last 20 years. 7 nights caravan stay used to be 470 odd quid now 900 quid (south devon) as for on site food shop prices they are a joke. Abroad destinations are getting our money year after year as its cheaper. (well not mine anyway) . Thanks.
I always find your food reviews and supermarket commentaries very interesting. Here in the US, I do without some things when I think the price is too high. With little children though that isn't always possible. (Or with cats. My cats eat better than I do, I am convinced.)
In USA too, I see the holiday camp prices are higher than normal as per usual, but I think our prices are far higher in local supermarkets, Decent Bread here is $5-$6a loaf. Ruffles $6 its insane, I leave out the luxuries at that price too, Im not willing to fall for it.
@@rbnhd1144 I hear that. Went into Aldis not that long ago and saw a box of crackers for 7 something. More than seven dollars for a box of crackers?? No way am I paying that.
When you booked the holiday, it should tell you the grade of caravan that you paid for. Eg deluxe, prestige, platinum etc. great video. I love caravan holidays. Though they have gone expensive too. I always found the on site shop far too expensive. The issue is convenience and they know you may have travelled a long way, so you’ll pay over the odds for bread, milk etc. it won’t ever end… unless the camp sites close!
I've had a few Haven holidays but always left the site to find the nearest supermarket to stock up on food. When you go out on your day trips you stop off at the supermarket again on your way back to the site if you need anything. A rare treat to have a takeaway on site but same again, collected a takeaway on the way back to the site. When camping I would buy six disposable BBQ's and cook us all bacon for breakfast, no pan to wash and no fat splatters. Lol
Looks like a nice place to holiday with kids but the staff should be wearing balaclavas! I suppose if it's a long drive to a market, it's better to pay more for the convenience of the holiday camp shop than the petrol it costs to drive off-site to pick up the one or two things you forgot. Keep up the great videos!
When I went to Haven near Blackpool many moons ago it was a Spar supermarket, super expensive for the time. I just got a bus to the ASDA in the town and got all my shopping there, even with bus fair the shopping was cheaper
Hi Gareth, it looks a nice place for a family holiday, but if i was going there i would take my own stuff especially when you have children. I didn't think the fish and chips were a bad price for somewhere like that
We look after our grandchildren a couple of days a week during the school holidays. And to take them anywhere costs the minimum of £40, a trip to the cinema, by the time we’ve bought popcorn etc. Even a trip to the local park has a cost added to it, ie:- ice cream, coffee for granny and grand dad. I don’t know how young families, manage.
Is £75.00 a night a lot for an average family of mum, dad & 2.4 children? Three to four days for £225.00?!? I would pay it, subject to what it included / where it was. Everything can seem expensive but depends on what it is being compared to. The place looked lovely, very clean, tidy & safe for the kids….. I think it’s more about value for money….👍
Not gonna lie, It looks a fab site, clean, tidy, nice & relaxing...the shop prices are about right for those type of places to be honest, Although 75 smackers for a tent pitch for 1 night is beyond extortionate!!,The caravans look epic though! Hope you all had a fantastic break pal :)
So fish and chips for 4 is over £45😮. That's just for 1 meal for 1 day! Chill box and supplies to go. Kitchen seems suitable but are there the cooking implements 🤔. Great vlog
The Caravans/mobile homes are fitted out lovely now(like yours) but if anybodies thinking about living in one full time because they`re much cheaper than a house; look into the pitch fees first. The charges here in Hampshire are approx. £7000 + per year. You still have to pay for your gas, electric and water on top of that+ many sites require you to leave site for 2 months of the year.
You’re right…. We visited this exact same mini market earlier this year…very expensive on most items,I wasn’t sure if it was the price , or their telephone number ..😂😂😂..lol.. Tip…don’t get caught out….look for a supermarket on your way to the site and stock up on most of the things you’ll need for your stay and steer well clear of the site shops…nice site otherwise..
The site is really nice and clean, that takeaway is robbery £5 for large chips, the drinks also daylight robbery, but the place looks nice and peaceful and the girls sound happy that’s the main thing ❤
It's been the same for years, right back to the early fifties we always had a holiday van when I was to kid at Flamborough. I also remember the horrendous inflation in the 1970's when I was setting up home and bringing up a family. Things are worse now as apart from enforced globalisation and greed we have an elite who couldn't care less about ordinary folk along with a useless Government and opposition. At least you don't have to suffer the old calor gas cooking and lighting with its condensation and smell and the horrors of an Elsan toilet with shiny toilet paper!
Hi gareth. Yes spot on about haven camps. Going to blue dolphin near scarborough. Taking all our own food etc. Prices are disgusting. Like you say, theyve got you! Not me! Im a yorhkshireman! Not having my pants down! Lol. Some families go through a good grand on food alone. We tent camping. Usually static, just wanna try under canvas, at my age! (61) wild camped cayton bay here in 81 when i was 19. Cost me f...... all lol. Glad you exposed the trap of food prices. Good call matey. Keep up the good work Andy McCartney, Hull Yorks
We love this Haven, we live in Whitehaven and don't drive do it's a easy Train ride away. The onsite prices are terrible but the couple of shops in Flookburgh are decent. Also, when we go to Haven we do a Tesco online shop and get it delivered to the caravan otherwise we'd be skint day one 🤣
Jesus , I nearly Chocked on my glass of wine 🍷 with the Shocking Prices of that Supermarket Gaz , but you brought back Lovely 🥰 Old Memories of going camping ⛺️ with my family when I was a LOT Younger mate Lol 😂 Xx
