A slightly different format today as I try out the Rockfire USB Nest Gameport to USB converter with a Thrustmaster F22, F16 TQS and Rudder Control System. How far can we take it without tearing these devices down and rebuilding them to work with modern systems?

That's a lot of groundhogs, clintons, and freedoms you got there! :) I really like your intro/title thing. It feels much less intrusive when it's not at the beginning of the video, making you feel like you have to wait through it.

I have an older version of that Thrustmaster joystick and a re-branded version of the same USB adapter. From experimenting I learned that my stick uses keyboard emulation for all the extra functions/buttons beyond the gameports limit of 4. It used a proprietary software to program the keyboard emulation and required DOS to run said software. You may want to look into that.

VR Enthusiast Yes exactly, the thrustmaster joystick and throttle must be connected to joystick port AND keyboard port (Din round connector) Actually most of the buttons are mapped to keyboard keys. The difficulty will be to have the programming software to work (uploading is performed through the keyboard connection, and i m not sure any keyboard Din to USB adapter will emulate correctly the bidirectional connection required).

I use two Rockfire RM-203 adapters with Suncom F15 eagle HOTAS and CH Pedals. The Suncom uses a combination of joystick buttons and keyboard emulation via a PS/2 connector for all of the buttons on the stick and throttle. With this I can use 100% of the setups functionality in Windows 10.

JohnnyNismo I have a few questions. I have the same setup. Suncom throttle and CH rudder pedals (both gameport). Is it neccesary to have 2 Rockfire USB nests ? Or is it possible with 1 USB nest by connecting the throttle with the pedals? What do you do with the PS2 connector ? Which mode (1,2,3 or 4) do you use for for the setup and do you use Windows 7,8 or 10 ? Hope you can provide me with some anwers so I can use them again. Thanks in advance !

Have anyone tested this Rockfire USB adapter with the CH Products Virtual Pro Pilot? does all the axis/buttons work?

All that daisy-chaining to connect all the devices via the game port is bonkers! The Thrustmaster engineers must have had a hell of a time figuring out how to connect all that stuff via the game port; I thought it only supported four buttons? Very curious as to how on Earth 19 worked (+even more on the throttle!) At 14:25 you can see two extra ports on the back of the throttle - what are those for?

I recently picked up the USB nest just for my logitech wingman extreme joystick. my goal is to use it to play Star wars Squadrons on the PS4 pro (along with a PS3 Aviator stick, since it's USB). as much as I like the DS4, nothing beats vintage joysticks.

Thanks for the video. Helped me to decide to invest in this Rockfire USB nest. I have exact the same Thrustmaster pedal and want to use it in combination with the Honeycomb Alpha Flight Yoke. I would hate to buy a new USB rudder pedal while I have a decent Thrustmaster pedal (which costed 125 £ back in 1997) at hand. I will give it a try.

there must be a way to import the xp or 98 inf file and driver to windows 7 or later, or a third party fan made fix or something.

Hello, is there a way to get a Saitek Cyborg 3D joystick with usb connection to work on a modern console like the PS4 or Xbox one? I would like to use my old controller to play Star Wars Squadrons or MS flight Sim when that releases for Xbox. But simply plugging in the controller to the consoles does nothing...

did you ever notice that the output was slightly off to one side? I keep running into that issue with my RM-203 - the raw values only scale from ~6 to ~200 on a scale from 0-255. I don't know if it's Linux, my joystick with its aged-like-milk potentiometers, or the RM-203 itself.

I just purchased the same rudder pedals on eBay, the build looked good and the spacing is nice...but is there toe breaks? I sure hope so..if not is there a work around?

I remember having a few different thrust master sticks years ago for the numerous flight Sims I had back then. Sadly never had the rudder pedals or the throttle, though I did have a flight yoke at one point (I did some basic flying and glider training back then, so the stick and yoke had the side benefit of being able to practice in a flight sim what I'd been taught). Sadly have none of them anymore and mostly have 360/One wireless controllers for most things beyond the keyboard and mouse. Though I think I have a usb flight stick somewhere. On the subject of the game port. I don't think Microsoft were entirely to blame. Iirc they used interrupts, which Intel was keen to get rid of and so along with wanting to push usb to get rid of serial, parallel ports, the game port and a number of sound devices were stopped working by processor and chipset changes as well as Microsoft wanting to streamline windows beyond XP.

I bought the same adapter from AliExpress for my Trust Predator SV85 joystick. Unfortunately it didn't work because that joystick only has two axis and two buttons (one button on top and one trigger). I set it to the closest option but I was unable to calibrate it (there was no movement). I don't think it is a problem with the joystick itself, since it was barely used (the only computer with a gameport I had, died long ago).
@Lachlant1984

Are you using any special software to set up the calibration and other settings, or are you just using the standard joystick software that comes with Windows 10?
@RMCRetro

Nice video but you forget to remember that the Gameport is restricted in its functionality. To handle such an amount of buttons it must be a digital communication. But I don't know if this is also restricted. USB does here much more functionality.

Hey RMC. Great vid. Got the same USB Rockfish and success with rudders and a Gravis Blackhawk stick. When I plug in identical F16 Throttle and FL16 FLCS the response is erratic. Seem to be good condition controllers. Daisy chained as you did. Individually, without anything else plugged in, I get the same behavior, response is nuts (which is odd cause throttle is identical). Any ideas? Thx

Dirty or worn out potentiometers in the controllers.

It's hit or miss with these adapters. They work flawlessly with Suncom (currently have an F15E Eagle and SFS throttle hooked up actually) and simpler equipment, but most things with more than four buttons that don't rely on keyboard emulation or pedals with toe brakes (such as the CH Pro Pedals) will only give you partial functionality. You will also likely have problems with DOSBox games as well because of how each device is detected. I haven't gotten my HOTAS to work right with MechWarrior 2 for example yet.

Four years later... Just found one of those Game port 2 usb adapters and love it for my DosBox setup, now if I could just find a new IBM model M keyboard sigh
@Sokol10

LOL, the adapter transform an "high end" HOTAS of 1990's ( 2 axis + 18 buttons on stick, 4 axes + 10 buttons + mouse in throttle, 1 axis rudder pedal) in: - 4 axes, 4 buttons "HOTAS". :)) This old HOTAS wort for people that are able to rewire then in modern USB controllers (BU0836, DSD 12, MMJoy2, FreeJoy), and so keep their originals functions and can even add more axes, buttons. Gameport to USB adapters are a 1999 tech with only 8 bits (256 points of resolution), a "lemon".

I found one a Thrustmaster topgun joystick for a couple of dollars with it's own box at a goodwill a while back. system requirements is DOS, Windows 3.xx, or windows 95, and a gameport. it recommends the thrustmaster ACM Game Card.

There's a kind of new open source version available for such a gameport -> USB adapter (aka Necroware gameport adapter). Besides the analog features it also supports the digital protocols of Microsoft, Logitec and Gravis and you can add new Joystick implementations as well: m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tSJLgCD8jeM.html

The problem with the Flighsticks with 5 or more buttons and additional axis is, they have to be supported by the application - the flight simulation for example - itself. Because they use a proprietary communication protocol, by using the standardized analogous joystick signal and modulationg their own digital signal onto it. That is how these sticks add the axis and buttons beyound the standard of 4 buttons/4 axis of the original PC gameport. And you don't have this support in modern games.
@mjl1966y
@mjl1966y 5 лет назад
Well, that sucks. I have hundreds of Falcon 4.0 hours with my trusty FLCS/TQS and was really hoping to use it for DCS. But if it's a programmable emulator, then if you program it in DOS and then map to keyboard strokes in game...? (I still have both floppy disks.) Ah, but that all depends on sending code to the chip via the old gameport interrupts. :( Damn.

I remember the Microsoft Sidewinder with force feedback that required a midi capable game port work. I wonder how many other sticks used the midi functions for other uses, or can the usb nest be hacked together with a usb to midi thing and make an unwieldy monstrosity...

When I played PC games back in the 90s I did not have access to a gamepad or joystick of any type, I didn't get my first PC gamepad until 2002 and it's USB of course, so I know little to nothing about joysticks that use the DA15 game port. I've just been watching a video by joystick rehab about using old joysticks on modern PCs, he talked about analogue and digital joysticks. Because your Thrustmaster joystick has a POV hat and more than 4 buttons, it's probably a digital joystick, so you might be able to get a game port to USB adaptor that has support for digital joysticks.
