Rockhounding in Western NC

This should be a fun one. I love the rocks. Katie is the only person I can think of who has a fascination with stones. It’s part what makes her so special and beautiful.

What a beautiful place to have the privilege to be able to call it home. This brings back my childhood I lived in a place that looked so much like this until I was around 10yrs old I could go exploring all day just me and my dogs Oh how I miss it. I took so much for granted but I just was to young to understand how blessed I was for living in such a beautiful place. I sure would love to be able to go back there but the sad truth is it's not the same it was sold and the people over the years changed it so much it doesn't look anything like it did . They ruined it well that's not nice of me to say so I will say they ruined it for me not them . They didn't understand what a piece of paradise they had before bringing in heavy equipment digging up the ground and cutting the old old trees down. This is a beautiful place. If you ever come to Michigan rock hunting on the Great Lakes is awesome! I’m 70 years old and have picked rocks all my life. So nice to see young people loving this hobby and making beautiful things.✌️👍❤️

Not only the visual aspect of a small waterfall, it is the sound of the water tumbling and cascading over the rocks and the oh so soothing, calming, ethereal and sublime feelings that evoke an even greater calm in the soul. Water is magic, water is life.

I love rockhounding WNC creeks. I keep a lot -- probably too many -- but my favorites are the red quartz. Anyone who can appreciate a little creek after seeing and hearing it everyday for their whole life definitely deserves to be there. Your Mom has touched on the fact that we here in Appalachia seem to be very connected the land and its features. Thanks for the video.

Our son who is 54 now found a huge rock when he was about 7 years old and carried it home. It was heavy and he could hardly carry it. He kept that rock until he was in high school...it stayed in a garden when we moved...once in awhile we talk about his rock.

That is maybe the finest creek, I've ever saw. I'm in Florida and our creeks are blackwater with sand bottom. They're pretty too but a different kind of way, and certainly no tumbling water.

I played in a creek like that when I was a kid at my papa Noah's on groundhog rd in Hartford TN. The creeks emptied in the pigeon River. In the early 70s. Some of my favorite places, memories. As a kid I used to tell my friends my papa lives at the foot of the smoky mountains! 👩‍🌾

Both of you girls remind Me of My daughter, beautiful on the inside and outside, her Great Grandma lives in the deepest part of Ohio ,near West Virginia , there is a creek there that she always played in and would bring home lots of rocks so she asked for a rock tumbler , I bought her one and she loves it , the time seems to slow down when we visit , away from electronics , I find peace and tranquility down by the creek , your videos are inspiring for all , thank you for posting!

Katie, I have developed an interest in learning more about the geology of the lower Appalachian Mountain region (Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia). Lately, I have discovered the use of hard flint/chert in primitive fire making and some very limited knowledge of flint knaping. This video is one that has inspired me to get outdoors to look for different rocks and assess their hardness for myself. I have a cousin who loves metal detecting. He calls it "dirt fishing".

it was rad seeing ya talk about the different types of rocks, would love a more in-depth video on that! we have a lot of similar stuff up here in wv, but i'm not well versed on the names of it all. apparently the old main road used to run out our holler past the end where i live and go all the way out and over another hill to another holler. i've found old tires all over the place throughout it, and some carvings on trees, but that's about it. it'd be cool to take a metal detector out there!

Stamey Creek reminds me of Fall Creek up in Wilkes County. Cousins and I would hike that Creek so much. If you could go for miles, you would get to the Cascades waterfall at E.B. Jeffress park on the Parkway. That Creek stayed cool and was pure and clean, felt GREAT during hot summers. Pick up a flat rock, skip it across the creek. FWS used to stock the creek and we would catch Rainbow Trout all day. I miss those days so much. I love the outdoors, nature is God's gift to us, and I admire you for being a good steward of your gifts.. Katie, you are so practical and down to earth, and it is a pleasure to hear you speak, what a beautiful soul. Really enjoyed your showing off your creek and what you do there Katie. This was awesome!! Thank you thank you thank you!

Thank ya Katie for this video. I remember when I was a kid fifty-five years ago, my brother and I would wait on the school bus. We were on a bridge that crossed a creek right at the end of our driveway. The creek sounded the same way as where you are, coming down the mountain. We would throw rocks at the snakes that we would see up under the bridge. In the summer I would put on my dad's rubber boots and walk into the creek looking for critters. I was only about six so you can imagine how big the boots were. The sound and smell of the creek will always stay with me, I hope. When I hear and see the creek in your video's it always takes me back over a half a century. If I was thirty years younger I might just have to take off after you. I know this is an old video, but being a Rockhound myself, I had to watch it. I also metal detect. I would recommend that you take a look at the Xterra Pro coming out next month by Minelab. It has a great price and is several steps above a Bounty Hunter. The reason for mentioning it is that I guarantee that there are coins out there somewhere in or on the banks of that creek. I appreciate the video and am going to send you some rocks from Mojave desert in Southern California that I have found.Take care.

For someone that doesn’t have a degree in geology, you certainly know a lot about rocks. Love your creek. When I was a young lad I would stay on the creek all day looking for crawfish 🦞 chub minnows and salamanders. Finding an arrowhead was a plus. Loved your video. It took me back in time, thanks.

Katie, have you ever found fossils or arrowheads in or near the creek? I grew up by a couple of creeks like Stayme Creek. Lived in the woods by the creeks all summer. Couldn't have asked for a better place to grow up. Love these videos. Thanks for sharing. You bring life to my tired old soul.

I have had to learn discipline because i want them all when i get in the creek, nowadays i only take some and i use a lot in the landscaping and in potted plants👍💯❤️ - personally i feel the energy vibration in rocks they collect n hold energy and it is a really cool feeling always steadies me . Rocks keep energy memories from those who went before us. ❤️

You are living my dream life. If I have to start over again I want to move to a more mountainous area and have a creek on the property. There is a little bit of platinum in your area, you may find flecks of it on occasion. I am currently near the Hiddenite mines. We have a lot of different rocks, mainly quartz. Enjoy:)

Man alive, I would kill to have a creek like that so close. The creek at my house is about a 10-15 minute trail walk away. It must be amazing to be able to hear that falling water from your own porch. Nothing sounds better to me and it always seems to quite my soul and block out everything else. I often go to the creek alone and time seems to come to a standstill, everything that I have been doing earlier in the day just seems to melt away, especially if I'm having a tough day. I live in the upstate or piedmont of South Carolina right in the middle of the gold belt that stretches through the upstate area of S.C. into North Carolina around Charlotte where the first big strike of gold happened in the United States. There are lots of places, especially where former gold mines were, that you can go and for a small fee they let you pan for gold or you can get buckets of ore and run them through a slouse. We have a lot of quartz where I live. It seems to come in a lot of various colors such as the common white, to almost clear, lots of rose colored shades, and various smokey colors also. One thing that we have plenty of are quartz rocks that have long perfect crystals in them. When you find a rock that is nothing but shafts of crystals all stuck to one another the top of the rock while have a rough spiked texture where each long crystal pokes out and the ends will be faceted with how ever many sides each crystal has. They are easy to find if they are in the sun because the light bounces off of each one of the facets. Do you know what these rocks with many long crystals all stuck together in one heap would be called, or is it just called crystalline quartz?

Ya’ll are super savvy with regards to metal locating ( time spent to riches found ) it’s about the experience. Also it’s fantastic that the relics you come upon are familial. Good Stuff, keeps the senses sharp and allows your talents to mature

Katie I have rewatched this video and I've noticed a few similarities between your rockhounding and my birding. Background: I haven't had the first course in ornithology or wildlife biology, it's just something I've learned that I am very passionate about and taught myself through independent studies and going on guided walks. Habitat: I've learned a lot about different habitats and which species are most attracted to each, just as you know the best places in your creek to go rockhounding. Spirituality: I cannot look at a bird without at least firmly believing that there is a God that created such a magnificent world. I may forget my bedtime prayers more often than I should, but every feather (or rock) is a prayer in my heart. Fulfillment: Even if you don't find the right rock(s), or I still don't get to see that elusive Swainson's Warbler, it's still a day spent being outside, loving and learning about nature. I'll probably come back and watch this video again before I visit my creek in Purlear next week. I'll be looking for birds, of course, but I'll also have a better appreciation for the rocks as well.

Excellent video! That creek is BEAUTIFUL! You're very lucky to live in such a beautiful place.I love rock hunting and metal detecting with my wife and son. If they're busy I go it alone. I take my canoe and paddle down river on a nine mile trip and stop and walk EVERY rock bar along the way! If you ever come to Ohio let me know and I will take you to some EXCELLENT spots along the river that are well off the beaten path. Some of the rock bars here are a hundred yards wide and several hundred yards long. The nice thing about rock hunting from a canoe is you don't have to pack all your finds out, you just load 'em in the canoe and float to the next spot! I call it TREASURE hunting cause i have also found copper wire and once found a 15 LB chunk of bronze from an old Foundary that used to sit along the river in the 1800's ! Another time after a big rain me and my boy found over 60LBS of old Lead pipe that washed down in the flood! We're still casting slingshot ammo from all that Lead. We've also found old throw nets that got hung up and later washed down that still have the Lead line attatched, we cut the leads off the Lead line and use them as weights on our limb lines or cast them into Muzzleloader ammo or slingshot ammo. I love finding flat pieces of Banded slate and making them into arrowhead pendants.Your Momma has our email so if you ever want to talk rock hunting, treasure hunting ,or crafts, ( I make beaded jewelry, slingshots, walking sticks, ect. My wife does crochet and twisted wire jewelry) .Feel free to drop me an email cause I could talk about this stuff all day! I understand what you're saying about feeling close to God when you're out there in the middle of his creation. Nature is Gods church, I feel closer to God out there than I do inside any church house. Thanks for sharing this video, I truly enjoyed it!

Katie, the stone you picked up at 4:25 looks like Mookite. I have studied geology both formally (Roane State Community College) and informally (I started collecting rocks and minerals at age 9.) I love the science as well as the history of geological studies. I have a fairly large collection of semi-precious stones and mineral samples. One of my favorite stones in my collection is a large piece of yellow jasper agate. I also have a good sized chunk of raw tigereye and a big piece of tiger iron. My best stone is a natural blue zircon that I found in a box of dyed, cracked quartz stones, in a shop in Cherokee, NC., about 40 years ago. I paid 50 cents for it at the time.

That is a beautiful creek. Have you ever looked at the emerald mines in NC. There are some commercial and private gem claims in NC. I have planned minute amounts of gold and some tiny gem samples around Cullowhee. There is so much to discover in our mountain waters.

Just love all y’all’s videos! Have you ever used rocks from a fish we call drum here on the French Broad? The rocks are white like pearls and come from their head.

Enjoyed the video very much. I'm also not a geologist, so I'm saying these things to make sure I got it right too. But both quartz and feldspar are not metamorphic rocks. In fact, they're not rocks at all, they're minerals. A metamorphic rock called quartzite is made up of the mineral quartz. The igneous rock Granite is usually made up of three primary minerals: Quartz, Feldspar, and Mica.

Thank you. I learned a lot. I'm a rock hound, but haven't looked in creeks/rivers much. So, this was exciting information! Also, when you held your hand up as the "tool" you use, there was quite a bit of space (or different height between the fingers) compared to most people's hands. I'm curious if Corie has the same feature. Look at other people's hands and see if you can see what I mean. :)
