Hey sweetie, imagine this..... ....take some short building nails half inch long or so with nice large flat heads. Cut up a large cereal box or some card board. You will need two sides or pieces the same size. . polk the nails through to create a nail bed for each of the rocks to sit on. Use at least six to 8 of nails spaced out for each of the rocks to rest on. Then take another cereal box or cardboard side and glue it to the side with the flat nail heads. When dry, you will have a group of tiny nail heads to support each of the rocks. You may not even have to sand the bottoms of your pieces at all. Look at what pottery makers use to support their pieces while cooking. This is pretty much the same concept. Have a wonderful day and let me know if you try this and it works out for you.
I have discovered that a cat scat mat is lighter than a nail bed , just cut to whatever size you want and rocks stick less to plastic than metal. Amazon has them . Enjoy. Another great tutorial Rachel thank you
Excellent idea Ronni! I happened to have a box of thumb tacks that I'm going to try. I can also use this to bake my polymer clay pieces on to prevent shiny spots on the back.
Thanks everyone for your comments on what to rest the rocks on while waiting for them to dry/cure I had no idea and thank you Rachel "they just pop off"💞🇦🇺
Great tutorial, I found wooden sticks cause more bubbles in the resin so I switched to a plastic spoon or silicone mixing tools. They all wipe clean with a baby wipe or isopropyl alcohol and a paper towel you can keep reusing either over and over. 💖
What a wonderful and well explain tutorial (video). I love how sweet and genuine you are when speak because is like you're talking directly to me. Never change🥰! Thank you very much 👍!!!
I'm a new subscriber and you are my first. I'm an old lady and just learning my way around RU-vid. I started painting garden art since I retired and am always learning. Prior to that I never painted anything except my walls. It's fun and I learn something new with each project. I could watch you paint all day. You make it look so easy, even for a beginner, with such professional results. Thank you so much for sharing your talent and amazing creations with the world. You are truly blessed.
My very first time using this resin was 2 weeks ago. My rocks were nasty sticky and I found the art resin website and there was a link specifically for sticky messes. Sooo helpful to know to mix strict equal parts and I now do thinner coats so this stuff lasts so much longer!! New subscriber! Only been painting about 1 month and I’m addicted to your rock vids. Thanks for sharing! 🦋
Rachel....Congratulations on the 67K subscribers! I was one of your first 1K. Time has flown, and you have grown! I'm very happy for you! You put out videos for all levels of talent, and you achieve this by making it FUN to try. I want to thank you for all you have done for me, personally. Some days I just don't feel like smiling, and then I see you have a new video out. My smile comes back to life! Love you Rachel.......
Wow, Rachel very nice and practical tips ! I appreciate them very much. You got a new subscriber here. I myself is into resin art, though I focus more on photos. I also use Art Resin specially for final coating in my photo arts. And you are right, it is very glossy and clear. Let us support each other's channel. Will watch you always.
Rachel, it’s not spit you have to worry about when you use a straw to pop the bubbles. It’s condensation. Just use multiple straws and don’t blow thru one for more than a breath or two. (I play a Japanese flute and condensation builds up in the flute after I’ve been playing for a while.)
I used to have that problem! I find that the less I use the better it turns out for sanding. Really don't need a lot of resin, A little goes a long way!! Also I use scatmat for cats, I lay the rocks on there to dry in a plastic container. Then you don't have to sand as much stuff off the bottom. I hope this helps in some way!!
I'm watching this for a second time because I've been having a hard time with whether or not I want to invest in the resin. I don't sell my stuff very much, so I really shouldn't even be making so many pieces - storage is at a premium! But I do love the way it shines!!!
I tried to spread it with a Cotton bud... it works perfectly on smsl surfaces and no waste or brush... for big surfaces the gloves are perfect.. thanks
The shop vac is an awesome tip and which drimmel tip do you use? I have sandpaper one's that I go through like mad!!🤣 Thank you for your tutorials.... I would never have started painting rocks without your guidance!!💞🌸
I've been trying a lot of ways to glass my painted rocks but I was never happy about the result. I didn't think about resin. Genius you're a genius. Thanks for this great tutorial❤
Thank you Rachel. I use Art Resin too. Mine never have those red stoppers but otherwise the same. I have never seen the floating bubbles. Will watch for them in the future. I have used a straw before, but will stick with my culinary torch or heat gun in the future. Mine always have more bubbles when I apply the resin than yours. In your first resin tutorial, you mixed it up, then waited 10 min or so before applying it. This time you mixed it and applied it right away. Will try that too. Thank you for the update!
Oh I wished I had watched this first. I painted 5 rocks, so when it came time to resin them I used foam plates. First I resin the backs and thought I’d resin the fronts once the back dried. Big mistake! The foam plate stuck to my rocks in places. I’m going to try the wax paper next time. Thanks for the tips, I love your work.🌸
I have been making resin tumblers for several years, and I have never seen bubbles float up when mixing...lol. I have been using the same plastic measuring spoons since I began, and I just wipe them out with a baby wipe, then dry with a paper towel. And the torch is the best thing for popping bubbles. I freaking love each and every rock you make!! Going to start making my own stones!! You have a loyal subscriber from now on!! You're talented, funny, and you explain everything in an easy to follow way!! Don't ever change!!
Just used this video to resin my rocks. The process made it so easy I can’t wait to see when they’re completely dry. Even found my little plastic box with the lid to put them in. Thank you so much
Dear Rachel, I have made a possibility for drying the stones: I pour 1cm of raisin and hardener in a small plastic can. Then I set 4 big screws head down into it and let it sit. It works very fine and the stones only have 4 little spots, when they are dry. I hope, you could understand, what I meant.
Love all your tutorials....your works of art are amazing and you always give helpful tips and tricks! Might I suggest putting the freshly resined pieces on a baking rack in the box as that would give the resin a space to drip to and leave less surface to build up on.....just sayin' Thanks again for all your videos ❤🇨🇦
I know it looks like I'm still trying like a maniac, it's actually sped up alot or my videos would be way too long! But even when I stir slowly, there are some escaping resin bubbles😃
May 28th First day I have played with Resin - oh my goodness, so much better than polyurethane and I love how it can fill in the holes. I did some blank stones for a better dotting surface as well! Love these tutorials Rachel! Kelli in Florida - I will try to remember to send some pics! Hugs 2022
Well done Rachel, you have explained how resin works really well. I don't use Art Resin because of the floating bubble, it's the only 1 I have used that does that.
I can't thank you enough for doing these videos. During this pandemic, waiting for your videos has brightened my life. I love your humor and keep going. Love the Lysol wipe idea for resin clean up.
Hello! I am LOVING your channel! I am new to your channel and to rock painting and resin! Woo-Hoooo!!! In this video you said you go over the rocks again after 5 min to make sure there is no debris or bubbles. My question is... Do you mean you go over them again with the resin or the culinary torch? lol I know it is probably a duh question but in my defense I am a newbie! lol I look forward to first trying to follow along with the art on paper and then I will try it on a rock. Or do you think it is best to practice on the rock itself first??
I watched your tutorial and thank you. I resined several rocks and let them dry over night. They are a little sticky and assuming they need to dry more. Just wondering what I may have done wrong. It has been two days and they are still a little sticky. Thanks Rachael. Love your art on rocks. You are my favorite.
I haven't tried resin yet but your video makes me a lot less nervous to try it. As always, yiur art work is absolutely beautiful. Stay safe! All the best, ~ Lois
I did my first resin application today... how long do I let the rocks sit before placing them in a container with a lid? Thank you for your wonderful instructions!! I'm so excited to try some of your designs... I'm am so grateful I found you on RU-vid!!
The ones that know you knows your not being mean. Thank you sweetie for the video. Hope you have a wonderful day and an AWESOME weekend. Please be safe, much love.😻😻😻💋💋💖💖💖
Thank you! Thank you for this video! Your first resin video was very helpful and this one further clarifies the process. I have always wondered about how the back of your stones look like and how you deal with any ridges. 👏❤
You do such a great job! I think I really overuse my resin and always have a thick flattened bottom. I'll try to go lighter next time! I put my stones on a silicone mat to dry. I have a hard time getting the resin pieces off after I'm finished. One thing I found that works great is a lint roller. It picks up all the little pieces and is much faster than picking them off!
Hi Rachal I see you put the Rocks down after putting resin on the bottom of the rocks. Don't they stick to the surface? Great tutorial and love your rock paintings x
This was a fantastic tutorial. You explain everything in such detail and make everything look so easy (which I'm sure it isn't) thank you for sharing your talents and knowledge♥
Thank you for sharing this. I bought some of the same resin but was reluctant to use it but now I feel confident enough to try it . Your rocks are all so beautiful thank you for sharing your wonderful talent.
Very good points Rachel, Ive never done rocks before, but watching you gives me inspiration to try, but got to know do you sell your pieces? Because as much as I'd love to try my own, I'd love to own a Rachel original : ) and being a Scorpio I would love a Scorpion either in a striking position or lying flat either in blues or reds, but I love how you use dots of paint to fill a space & I also like how you accent a pc using gold paint too, very nice stuff. 😜👍
To clean resin out of mixing bowl, off brushes and measuring spoons, SPRAY bowl with non stick cooking spray like Pam. Put brush and measuring spoon in add dish soap. Swish and swirl all in bowl thoroughly then clean with pure dish soap ALL WILL BE PERFECTLY FREE OF RESIN and nice and clean Add dish wash liquid and
Absolutely fantastic and helpful tutorial- THANK YOU ❤ Love your tat, and the "vampire lips" rock, will you be doing a tutorial for that - i keep trying at lips but just cannot get it right! X
I’ve never used resin but have been wanting to try...couple of questions though..do you need the culinary torch or could you maybe use a hair dryer? And 2. These don’t stick to the wax paper or the plastic container? I love how yours came out! Makes the rocks really pop!
Thank you for the update. I have using resin after watching your first video and learned a couple things the hard way ( not putting lid back on resin and pouring from same bottle twice, using too much resin using brush not hands, etc). Had to figure out the dremmel/ finishing thing on my own... The only thing you said that I question is you mixed the resin and then used it 1-2 min later...? I thought we had to let it sit for 10 min before using? Oh and thanks for the Lysol wipes tip!
Thank you!! I was never interested in painting rocks until I saw yours. Love watching you paint! When resining over a previous resined rock do you have to sand it first. Also would love to find the amazing rocks you find. I’m in North Carolina. Haven’t seen anything as pretty💕
That's wonderful. I've been using both, the torch and the dermal, for awhile now!! Great minds think alike. I discovered the dermal when yea...a huge resin ridge!! Love the video too. Have a blessed day. Did you ever find the Fiery Red Folk Art paint? It is gorgeous.
