Move over Ghosts n' Goblins references, we have Castlevania references now as this level takes heavy inspiration from the first Castlevania in the starting sections. Later, we get introduced to a poison mechanic where we have to avoid dipping into toxic waters, or Mega Man will get poisoned and take damage over time. The damage taken per second is higher the longer you were in it.
Shade Man takes inspiration from another Konami franchise, as he has Option Satellites, ala Gradius. They shoot out sonic waves whenever he does and follow behind him, taking the same path he does. They don't do contact damage thankfully and they can be destroyed. No wall reflecting or turning to stone here.
