PBS FRONTLINE "Secrets of a Bomb Factory"
Season 12: Episode 3
Wes McKinley didn’t know what he was getting into when, in 1990, he was chosen as foreman of a special grand jury investigating potential crimes at the Rocky Flats nuclear weapons plant in Colorado. But what McKinley and the other grand jurors learned in their two-and-one-half years of listening to testimony and examining other evidence disturbed them enough to risk prosecution themselves by going public. FRONTLINE, in co-production with Oregon Public Broadcasting, examines what the grand jury learned and what led to their rebellion.

The downwinders from the Nevada Test Site have suffered horribly as have those by the Hanford site. And people still don’t know much about Santa Susanna. But I didn’t know about Rocky Flats until last week when I started reading “Full Body Burden.” What a mess they’ve made of our country. Neils Bohr told Edward Teller upon seeing Los Alamos and hearing about the entire project: “You see, I told you it couldn’t be done without turning the whole country into a factory. You have done just that.”

I have watched this documentary twice now and prayed for all of those exposed to any type of materials within that plant. As an RN for 22 years now, safety and informed consent are critical for my line of work. I have a moral, ethical and legal obligation to each person/family unit that I provide care to. I want my patients to completely understand what they are facing. In closing, I have only one major thought: no matter what anyone might get away with here on earth, each person will stand before the judgement seat to make an accounting of how they lived their lives. No smoke screens or blindly looking the other way or claims of ignorance will save them.

Susan. I used to think people would answer. I was wrong. Jesus already paid for our sins. Therefore, there is no sin. Therefore, there is no need or place called hell. The man your worship sacrificed his only begotten son. That is not a good thing. Most men would die first. And heaven would have forgiven pedophiles murderers and rapist? Doesn't sound like heaven to me. I used to believe. Now I believe it was a big lie to distract us from discovering our true creator. Too many contradictions in the bible. All sin can be forgiven? Jesus already paid for them. This statement shouldn't even exist. Take care.

Susan Turcotte Look at what happened at Runit/bikini islands/Enewetak Atoll in the Marshall Islands. The people of that country & also what happened to the military crew they sent improperly equipped decades later. The cleanup crew fighting for their lives & even fighting to pass a bill to help them out. The Marshallese will never be able to live in Runit island & not to mention rising sea levels along with the eroding concrete dome/eroding sand under it. That place is leaking these materials into our ocean's as we speak.

I’ve personally been near rocky flats while it was still running and off and on over the years. What I’ve noticed is whenever they declare the site clean someone always finds samples of contamination that require another clean up. Yet people keep moving to Bloomfield and other communities that are growing ever nearer to rocky flats. What people don’t comprehend is plutonium can be extremely difficult to find in the soil. The thinnest layer of soil could block detection. But if the soil is exposed to the air even a particle the size of a pollen grain can kill if ingested.

Both Jacque Brever and Judy Padilla are heroines who were loyal to their employer until the last, yet had the emotional strength to stand up against both employer and the US Govt at that time. This was _'new'_ technology at the time they were handling & manufacturing, with most of the dangers not being documented until people were hurt and/or there were nuclear fires
@swingmanic
@swingmanic 6 лет назад
Personally I think the government knew the risks but the demand for nuclear weapons was of primary importance and peoples lives and the poisoning of the environment was secondary. The nuclear weapons industry had carte blanche to do as they wanted!. Sadly Jacque Brever and I'm sure many others were just sacrificial lambs in the process. Now the people are picking up the tab for an impossible cleanup operation which as people move into the area from other states in the U.S will make the statistics for radiological diseases look a whole lot better!

I went to college with Ms. Brever several years after this program was filmed. We were in an environmental restoration program together. For one of my classes I interviewed her and wrote a report on her story. After that semester I changed majors to Computer Science and lost touch with her; I hope she is thriving some where. I now live within 8 miles of Rocky Flats, there is a big housing development adjacent to the RF property ... I wouldn't want to live there.

There's a great book about it called "Full Body Burden." It's by Kristen Anderson, who grew up next door to it, and had family members who worked there. She even worked there for a while. It's got all this stuff in it and much more. I was born and live near the Hanford site. We still get contamination in the towns around here coming from Hanford, and it's nothing compared to Rocky Flats.

Have you been to Denver lately? Have you even looked at the housing needs around Denver? You'd be surprised where they throw up homes. It got made into a US FWS Wildlife Refuge. But what they don't tell you is, on occasion, in some areas, one or two of those wonderful bright shiney silver balls will work it's way up out of the ground. Their about the size of a softball or maybe the size of your average grapefruit. But, it's filled with enough nerve agent , to completely and forever wipe out the population , if one of them ever split open. and on at least one occasion I know of, it got that close. I use to work with a guy who worked out there when it was in full operation. Some of the HAZ MAT stuff they had was to hot to be moved and some of it got buried in place. There are places out on that so called refuge I wouldn't even venture out onto.

These jurors need to put what they want to say on paper, for a few reasons, despite what govt officials want or order. Ultimately the tax payer is going to foot the bill for clean up, while the govt and corp people retire on fat profits. The criminals need to be honestly prosecuted. Justice would be to turn Rocky Flats into a prison where those found guilty would be ordered to serve their terms. But without a revolt of some sort by the people, we all know that isn't going to happen.

The land surrounding and maybe including the Rocky Flats facility sat are now covered with new homes. It's a frightening thought that people live very close to where that plant was and their kids play in their yards. Did the government clean up the nuclear mess, or just let time go by and people's memories fade? And, the facility wasn't too far from the University and all the hospitals in Boulder.

So it only compensates them for $1'000/yr for their life-altering troubles, and that's if you don't add any of the plaintiffs legal fees. The only true survivor of this story is Plutonium...

What exactly was this lady exposed to? The program, and most people, automatically assume plutonium, but that's not likely the problem. Plutonium is not a nice material, but it is far from the worst thing she could have been handling at any chemical factory; in fact, her symptoms sound much more like chemical exposure than it does plutonium. Radiation poisoning's symptoms parallel deep burns; in fact, they are quite analogous. Plutonium in metallic or oxide form is not a very radioactive material. Bomb cores are quite often handled with a bare minimum of protection; physicist Raymer Schreiber said in an interview that he often handled plated cores. The cores used in the bombs dropped on japan were carried about in plywood boxes with thin magnesium coating. Plutonium emits alpha particles, and is therefore not a danger to a human unless it becomes embedded inside the body (including ingested or breathed). Respirators are sufficient, though hazmat suits are used for various reasons, generally to prevent carrying the material home. It is pyrophoric (it will burn, readily, as a powder), so cores are plated with nickel. It is also a heavy metal poison, like lead, copper and arsenic. No one, as far as I know, has ever died from plutonium exposure, including some test persons who ingested it. Look up the UPPU club. The radiation danger from a bomb comes not from the plutonium or uranium which is in the core; but from the fission products produced in the microsecond in which the atomic chain reaction occurs. Contrary to popular lore, the dangerous materials are those which decay away quickly, like iodine-131, with an 8 day half-life. Uranium and plutonium, with half-lives in the tens of thousands of years or more, are very mild by comparison. Just sayin'.

There were lots of VOC's or Volatile Organic Compounds in the form of carcinogenic solvents like Freon, Trichloroethane etc used for cleaning/degreasing machined components were used and workers were exposed without appropriate equipment. Lots of the 'spent' VOC's were released directly into the ground too, not really helping for long term hazards created as a result. Fume extraction must have been abysmal, judging by the raw *PU* found in the ducting!
@puncheex2
@puncheex2 7 лет назад
i would agree with that. Sounds to me like what she had she could have picked up in any chemical or manufacturing plant in the US. Or anywhere, for that matter.
@puncheex2
@puncheex2 7 лет назад
Get this right: the longer the half-life, the less intense the radiation. The really scary things are like Iodine-131 with a half-life of 8 days, Cesium-137 at 30 years. Structural steel has an infinite half-life, is it ultimately dangerous? if you don't understand this, you don't know anything about radiation. Secondly, nothing in what you said addresses the questions I posed.
@puncheex2
@puncheex2 7 лет назад
I did not so say. Go back and read the comments. You brought up the lead-lined gloves, not me. I didn't say the makers of the film were liars; I did say that they didn't apparently ask any hard questions, or use a nuclear physicist or nuclear medicine scientist to do so.

Very difficult. However it occurs to me that there was a war on. Not a hot war perhaps but more dangerous by far despite that. Not a war that many American citizens were perhaps as aware of as they might have been. Indeed they prospered considerably as a result of this war and the military industrial complex that fed it. If you examine the evidence of the corresponding Soviet nuclear weapons program in Chelyabinsk you will see similar and indeed arguably much worse errors of judgment were being made in this struggle to the death. Be thankful that it was the Soviet system that met its death as a result of the struggle and not that of the West. Mess can be cleared up, other than the spineless political incompetence that leads to decades of dithering with regards viable waste disposal methodologies that can't be pursued because some politicians might loose a vote or two. Some judgements can't realistically be made, or reviewed, by a jury of our peers especially when the judgement benefits from 20/20 hindsight. With the greatest respect to the charming lady, I don't want strategic decisions made by someone who hands out religious medals to her friends. I would however trust her implicitly to look after my loved ones in my absence! Horses for courses!

My father was one. Worked in Bldg 77 (later 777) from 1954 until he retired in 1982. He died from colon cancer in 1984. Our family tree has no incidence of any type of cancer, until my father's was discovered.

LOL, the video has a Colorado Department of Health or Environment say "there are no homes built there", while discussing the Rocky Flats site. Well, there are homes there now!!!!

Ricardo Moreno Google maps shows NO homes built there. Unless they built some in the last 4 months which I doubt. It's a National Wildlife Refuge and you can't build on one of those.

You’re building nuclear bombs and your hair is falling out, doesn’t need a rocket scientist to figure out what is happening.

Gas factory? Mmh, I like that! However, nobody is forced to, nor should work in a bomb factory. She knew what she was doing.

They chose to work there in unsafe conditions without protest, why blame the company

myyube; WTF??? The neighbors and community members who were contaminated over ~ 20 yrs didn't 'choose' to work there! This doc was about the lack of personal accountability for plutonium and other dangerous radioisotope leaks, a conspiracy of cover-up and collusion between DOE and Rockwell to break enviro laws and safety rules. Pay attention!
