The Nerd pumps himself up for a fight, in order to prepare for reviewing the SMS video game based on Rocky. This is Angry Video Game Nerd Episode 16.
One of the most successful movie franchises loved by children of the 80's was Sylvester Stallone's Rocky. Starting with the first Rocky movie released in 1976, the series had a huge impact on children and adults everywhere, winning all sorts of awards and praise. So, it was only a matter of time for Rocky's success to take a punch at the home video game console market. In this video, we find the nerd going over one of the games adapted from the franchise on the Sega Master System. So, what could an Angry Video Game Nerd have to say about a game based on such a successful movie franchise? It can't be too bad, could it?

You can have it or not, but there isn't any in between or up the middle. Look, we'd all like to be certain to enjoy the featured bit but it won't always cooperate. Just like the multi-flow plugs, these streams won't be correctly correlated and that's just the way it all tends to work when you're dealing with something like this. But I think I do agree with you, at least in theory.

Despite NES having by far the better game library, you really notice that the Master System was the better console, capable of better graphics and more colors. Would be very interesting how a NES game like Mega Man, Mario, Zelda, etc. could've looked like if it was released on the Master system

Magister Ludi The MS was a success, no question about it, people didn't care abut the pause button placed on the console instead of the controls, but for some games, it just spoiled the gameplay. I used to play with my foot on the console for exemple. Luckly, that button was big. My MS was a III compact, if you search on google you will see a big round white button on it, it's the pause. The thing is, I can't imagine playing Megaman or Zelda (you have to pause the game a lot on these games) on the MS...

I'd disagree. In the original episodes he's much more vulgar and over the top. In his more recent ones he goes on a tyraid every now and then, but even then his wording is more controlled and precise. I wonder if his wife has to leave the house when he's making videos so she doesn't have to hear him yelling lol

This game is easy to finish. As long as you surpass the training requirement Rocky is able to punch quicker. Clubber lang can be beaten easy with body shots. Drago is a bit tougher but its best to throw a big punch then back off a touch and repeat till he's beaten. In my opinion this is a great game and if you want a real challenge fail the training for each fight!!!

I love the old and new AVGN episodes. You can’t choose between the two because they both have emotion and time put into them. AVGN episodes from his Angry Nintendo Nerd days have same amount of time and dedication into the videos as the newer ones. Every episode or two has a reference to the older ones, big and small.

Daniel's Game Vault The original has not been removed. This is from the DVD version (hence the higher quality) as the DVDs are sold and the film clips, music, etc are copyrighted material. They can not be included in the DVD versions.

Back at the time of recording (I was eleven years old) I ran into James at a Home Depot in Lacey, WA (because he is in every Home Depot at the same time whenever he enters one) and we got in a kickfight. He lost. Never walked the same again. Or he has some sort of dysplasia, whichever you prefer.

Well, needless to say, a lot of the impact of the internet version is lacking (damn copyright laws!), but you did a great job at working around it. Couldn't ask for anything better. And that ending was just perfect! I never saw the DVD version, so I always thought that clip in the opening of "Moonwalker" was specially shot; now I understand it did actually come from somewhere.

I played this when it 1st came out in '87 and it's a total button masher... We had to use the Sega Sports Pad (track ball) because it was the only thing we had back then with rapid fire to finish the game. Real helpful for the training segments.

As stupid as it sounds, I think one of the reasons behind the gameplay and advice in the manual, is to teach players the principles of boxing. Of course, that's like expecting GTA to teach you how to drive BTW, I'd like to see a gameplay of "The Longest Journey"

ywyakdeathangel Most of his gameplays are done from the perspective of the average player, so it stands to reason that he may have not known about them, or that he excluded them deliberately. A how-to guide would probably show them, but as it is, this is a critique of the game's better-known aspects. Thank you for the +1

My mom got a bunch of these master system games when she was stationed in Korea back in the early 90's thinking they would work on our Genesis. I never got my hands on a master system, but wanted to play them so bad. For most of my childhood I thought they must've been some kind of awesome foreign version of genesis games. I'm glad didn't miss much lol

I beat this game way back in the day, only by using a rapidfire gamepad. Block on/off non stop while hitting whenever possible, still almost impossible. Drago is insane, and if you manage to beat him you see adrian and rocky hug

I'm surprised at 0:44 he didnt mention how fucked up the cover looks. In the movie his right arm is tucked to his side. On this it looks like he's doing a Heisman with a giant tumor on his right chest/shoulder.

to me, the AVGN before 2012 has its charm that nothing can compare to. AVGN on 2012 and 2013 lack the anger that AVGN based on. and the HD videos dont make me feel like going back to the past. I like when an episode quality is like VHS quality.
