Look up video with steve scruggs and rattlesnake bites. He demonstrates multiple strikes on these boots
@jeremysilcox9362
@jeremysilcox9362 7 лет назад
From my understanding the vast majority of the 15% of snakebites above the knee are on people's hands. Others include people who pass by snakes that are higher ground, people wading through water, and people climbing under houses etc. Here in the SE United States you do encounter Timber and Eastern Diamondbacks that can reach 6-7 feet long and can get pretty high and far out.

Thank you for this review and video Seth. If you are still monitoring this I have a question. Did you consider buying boots with a side zip? Are the non-zip you have easy to get on and off?
@bwelmhouse1
@bwelmhouse1 5 лет назад
I did consider it at one time, but I don't remember why I chose not to go with it. I think the reviews for the side zip weren't as good as the lace-up. Something about the zipper falling apart or something. Can't remember exactly. The lace-ups are easy to get on and off after having broken the boots in. At first when they're new, they're stiff and a little hard to get off. Not too bad though.

Thank you very much for this. I'm trying to decide the best choice for boots for snakes. I do a lot of bushwacking and scrambling when I peakbag and rattlesnakes are def something I need to consider. Especially since several just don't care how close you get until you're right on top of them. Are you still hiking with these?
@bwelmhouse1
@bwelmhouse1 4 года назад
Where do you hike? I find it amazing that there are snakes that won't move when they detect a large something stomping toward them. I am still hiking with these, but they're wearing out. I've put a lot of miles on them and all the flexing and wrinkling has worn tears and rips in the layers of fabric that get stressed the most. I plan on ordering a new pair soon.

@@bwelmhouse1 it happened again this weekend too. So... I'm in El Paso, and I am actively working to explore, survey, and peak the high points of as many ranges as possible. So if you look at a map and eye ball them mountain ranges in New Mexico and Texas, chances are I've either been to them, or already have drafted plans to visit them lol I recently started documenting my endeavors on my page if it'll at all satisfy your curiosity. Needless to say, I absolutely need them boots. Lol

No idea if you are still monitoring this post. From what I've read needle test is best do-it-yourself snake proof test. Appears these boots failed. Was interested after you said they were confy. Also read having laces not best idea. Thanks for posting. Saves time of any further consideration of this brand/style.
@bwelmhouse1
@bwelmhouse1 5 лет назад
But the problem with that test is, needles do not resemble or behave the same way as snake fangs, and they have drastically different properties. The needle was difficult to pierce the boot with. A needle is much thinner, is not tapered and is made of metal. A snake fang is curved, is tapered, is considerably thicker just past the very tip, is not metal and prone to breakage. It is much more difficult to pierce the boot with a snake fang than with a needle, and even the needle took great effort. Therefore, I can conclude that the cordura fabric within the boot layer is in fact snake proof. You bring up a good point with the laces being problematic with the eyelets being potential entry points for a fang. However, on these boots, the laces do not compromise their safety. The eyelet holes on the foot part of the boot have the snake-bite-proof cordura fabric folded in behind them, so it is not a problem. The laces on the shaft part of the boot do not have eyelets, but have solid, closed metal rivets instead. So a fang couldn't get past those. The cordura fabric is layered in with the tongue of the boot as well, so there's protection behind the laces too.
@peggysueprater4205
@peggysueprater4205 5 лет назад
@Simply Seth - thank you for the reply. Snake proof boot options seem limited for women. Recommendations received seem to lean to a full leather tall boot vs. Cordura or other high denier fabric. Considering a Chippewa (? Spelling), Irish Setter, a LA Crosse, or possibly a gaiter which seems to be the only product to claim 100% snake proof backed up by warranty. Little good a warranty will do if product fails at time of need. Thinking I will iikeky wear full boot more than gsiters. Primary concern Cooper heads but I understand rattlers are around too. You seem knowledgeable. Curious as to your opinion if you have the time. Obviously my first pair. Thank you in advance.
@bwelmhouse1
@bwelmhouse1 5 лет назад
@@peggysueprater4205 I've looked into those other options but I seem to remember their being more expensive. What I have now seemed to be my best option considering cost as a factor. And I don't think you can go wrong with really tough leather. I do realize the selection for women is more limited. My wife did manage to find a pair of the same boots I have. This is the video that ultimately sold me on Rocky boots. Like you, I was skeptical of cordura fabric's ability to prevent fang penetration. But this guy demonstrates many rattlesnake strikes on the boots my wife and I have: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-j1FFs4wYn5Y.html I also came across a more recent review from someone who got struck by a rattler while wearing these boots and the boot protected him.

Hey seth do you think you would get the same puncture proofing that you have in that cordora weave from the rip stop micro fibre weave of magnums boots? Asking because i have a pair of mach 2's not sure if i should go for gaitors on top or just get some knee high snake proof boots.
@bwelmhouse1
@bwelmhouse1 3 года назад
I wish I knew. I'm not familiar with those other boots. To be safe and unless you can confirm that with the manufacturer, I'd go with snake-bite-proof gaitors over your boots, just in case your boots won't stop the fangs, or just get boots specifically for protecting you against snake bites. I like that they're knee-high. Really adds more protection covering higher up.

Nice review, Seth. How much trail hiking vs. off-trail hiking do you do?
@bwelmhouse1
@bwelmhouse1 7 лет назад
I'd say about 80-90% off-trail hiking. I just don't like to go where everyone else goes. I like exploring new areas that aren't typically seen by the rest of the hiking public. It's more peaceful too, rather than being around obnoxious hikers talking loudly while hiking with their friends or people playing music on their phones.

@bwelmhouse1

I've had to replace two pairs over the last few years. The quality of the boots is great. It's just that I do an incredible amount of hiking, which puts a lot of stress where the boots crease (near the ankles). Eventually, the constant flexing of the creases in the boots with every step causes the eventual tearing of the material. I've gotten at least 1 1/2 years from each pair, which is great for footwear that I put a lot of miles on and subject to a lot of flexing and harsh conditions.
