Rocky vs Drago: Ultimate Review of the Ultimate Director's Cut! 

It baffles me that Rocky's speech at Apollo's funeral was cut. It's probably the most impactful moment of the entirety of both cuts.

I definitely prefer the original 1985 cut over the director’s cut. I would’ve liked it better if Stallone had kept the original intact exactly same & just added in the deleted scenes making run time over 2 hours 🥊

Actually really liked it as it was a bit more subtle and at the same time still felt like Rocky IV. The fights also felt way more even and brutal which I really appriciated. Rocky demolishes Drago in that last round.

Now give me a massive ultimate cut that's over 2hours!

Watched it in theater with my father and my son. 3 generations of Rocky fans and we all loved it.

I caught the director's cut in theaters, it was pretty good. But I still prefer the original Rocky 4

Some of the extra scenes with Apollo, the funeral and the extended Drago vs Apollo fight are better. I feel they cut too much from the original. I feel they could have cut 10 minutes of the original and added the 40 minutes of the director's cut making it a two hour cut. Hopefully someone can do a 2 hour special edition cut using footage from both films, i really miss the two gloves at the start.

I also appreciated the original line “It’s us versus them.” from Apollo towards Rocky. It really showed that it’s not about race, but about freedom versus communism.

The original is still best IMO. But I really did like the directors cut. There’s a place for both versions. I’m glad Sly did this!….

The final fight was definitely better. Instead of doing what they did in the theatrical cut between Drago and Creed (where Drago was basically just wiping the floor with him), Stallone added more to the final moments of the last fight where Rocky got in many more shots before Drago fell. That was more satisfying.

The new version was so good. It actually helped the characters grow rather than being too fantastic and a bit shallow like the original. It also really makes the flow into Creed II work better.

You can't mess with the No Easy Way Out montage, it's the montage by which all others are judged!

I wish Stallone would have kept in the boxing gloves smashing into each other in the director's cut. Also I wish he would have taken out in the driving montage clips of Drago and what he would look like in the fight against Rocky. He is not going to know what Drago looks like prior to the fight. Overall I loved the director's cut. Rocky 4 will always be my favorite movie of all time.

I loved the new cut. I enjoyed the different scenes they used to tell the same story but from a little different perspective. I especially loved the updated soundtrack. Sly added familiar tracks from the other Rocky films which added a lot of emotional depth and familiarity. When Rocky is trying to talk Apollo out of fighting again, all that music is new and helps deepen the scene. Mickey’s theme can now be heard during Apollo’s funeral, and goes great with some incredible new acting footage of Stallone. A really solid re-cut. Now we need the ultimate extended cut that combines both versions, so we have a trilogy of IV Films

I loved it just because i was able to go to the theater and have a 80s moment with my 14 year old daughter who loves Rocky almost as much as I do but I've seen the 85 version over atleast 1000 times. I got the VHS version of it for Christmas in 6th grade in 86 and watched it everyday for a year maybe two 😆 I got a original poster I have framed still the same on in the man cave and have alot of love for that version. I did have some things that I was like ? With decision to take away from his and Adrians discussion about his chances vs Drago turned into a kind of in his mind thoughts while he put pictures up on the mirror scene and took away the in the dressing room with Creed about his intentions why he wants to fight Drago and how he foreshadows his own demise. Other than that I really like it just as much as the original. I was hoping for alot more extra scenes because it was misleading by the studio saying 40 minutes extra. It was more like 5 minutes and a ton of alternate takes to replace the original ones. To me the best part of the new cut was the two fights, especially the final fight which he made more competitive by having Balboa wage war with Drago and had him on the verge of being knocked out i really liked the pacing and sound effects of it and the new scenes added to that were greatness. The whole ending was a surprise and at first was like whoa what? But after watching it at home i was pleased with it. I gotta also say that I almost forgot the two great added scenes of the commission which was filler and I liked it but was kind of not needed and the far superior new version of the funeral scene. Duke just sets the tone for my daughter and i, and by the time Rocky did his speech, I looked over at her and she was 😭 I had to hold it together by drinking my soda. 😆 a very powerful scene. All in all I now own it on amazon and will probably watch it as much as I can because it's very good. Still think the original is slightly better in a sense of just pure 80s badassery but this new one is razor close for me. Im just glad i was able to see it and wish my wife who passed in April could have seen it. When I met her Rocky IV was the first movie we watched together at my house after our first real date. She told me she loved Rocky and I fell in love with her at that very moment. She cried when Apollo died and I thought to myself I will marry her one day. I guess I kind of let this comment get away from me but Rocky IV means alot to me. If it wasn't for this movie I probably wouldn't have my daughter or my wife. I know my wife would have loved this version and I know she would have said the original is way better 😆 she was all about the original versions of any movie. I loved that about her, she wasn't easily swayed. I'll never forget watching the horrible The Last Jedi and in the theater she said, This is pure bullshit 😆 this is not George Lucas vision! She looked at me and said we need to leave now! 😆 man I miss her 😥

I was 14 when I saw the original cut. Still one of the best theatrical experiences I’ve ever had. Between this and Rambo II, Stallone totally had the pulse of movie audiences in 1985. Nothing can beat the pace of the ‘85 cut, but I still really enjoyed this new version. It’s a different experience through a more mature lens. Some of the ‘80s bombast and excess has been trimmed. I liked it for what it was, though this proves the rule that outtakes are generally outtakes for a reason.

Excellent review! And me too I prefer the original, the recut was toned down which I get, but the OTT was what I liked about the original and why it stood out to the others :) But I enjoyed it, and the fights were better in the recut!

Cutting Nielsen was a mistake. It was a Cold War film, that was the essence of it.

I just realised they cut out one of the best lines "Ive retired more men than social security!' by Apollo. Also most of Bridgette's lines were cut out as well almost like Stallone was trying to get rid of his ex wife like getting rid of the robot. I don't understand why he cut out so many lines in the original that were actually good. This cut could have easily been better at 110 to 120 minutes. I like that Duke and Apollo had extra scenes and lines. But the Drago Apollo fight starts around the 18 minute mark and the first 7 minutes of the film is Rocky 3 so the Las Vegas Apollo Drago fight starts at around the 11 minute mark of the actually film.It would be better for that fight to start around the 30 minute mark. My copy of the film is just under 94 minutes but 7 minutes is Rocky 3 and the credits are 5 minutes and 20 seconds so the actual cut is under 82 minutes!

It’s said to hear they changed No Easy Way Out. That is by far the greatest montage in existence. Nothing else comes close.

By preference, I prefer the original. But it works. The emotion and the intensity shifted. So the story was the same but the feeling was different. I agree, I shed a tear during Apollo's funeral. But the hard charge, motivated, tension filled original is what I loved about IV in the first place. That said, both are impressive works. I will gladly own both films and recommend anyone to see both. The colors and restoration look amazing. There were two places where I thought Sly added his current voice...the one 'yeah' after Drago says "Till the end" was really unnecessary and kind of bugged me. I wish he'd not added any new audio. But otherwise, it's was very enjoyable and impressivly executed.

I got to see Rocky 4 at the drive-in back in California when I was a kid..loved it.

As you said, the first cut is PERFECT and the ultimate rule that says dont try to fix what is not broken, let alone perfect. Its always nice to see unseen footage from your favorite movie but you cant expect to make a new cut with that, thats what DVD extras are for.

The original will always be better to me but damn I'm not going to complain about seeing cut footage after 40 years. Sly's a beast he said he's going to deliver something and he did. I look at it like Superman 2 the Donner cut it's a little off but still cool to have those cut scenes. I didn't like the 10 minutes of Rocky 3 in the beginning though they could have had a better opening to kick things off. It was pretty badass when Rocky hit Drago about 15 times at the end.

Rocky 3 will always be the best Rocky. Totally underrated in the series and the second Rocky vs. Clubber fight is easily the best of the series and the best fight scene ever captured on camera....

Few films capture the excesses and absurdities of the "Me Decade" like 1985's ROCKY IV. We miss the robot (he had the best character arc), but this remains a genuine '80's camp classic.

I liked both versions (actually watched the original on TV less that 12 hours after seeing the director's cut in theaters), but I do find myself liking the depth added to the characters through their reaction shots in the director's cut & especially enjoyed the usage of Talia Shire here. I'm just glad that the montages weren't cut as seeing them on the big screen for the 1st time was a treat. I'm going to get this on blu-ray for sure.

I just watched this today. I liked it but currently I have to say I still like the original more. I will need to visit Rocky Vs Drago more in the future and analyze it each time. I hope it gets released on physical.

I watched the Directors Cut in theatre and it was amazing. I never got to see a Rocky movie in theatre, (I’ve seen Creed and Creed 2 in theatre), but the sounds of the high tech sound system in the theatre made every knockdown, and big punches sound so cool!

The original Rocky IV cut is a 80s Gem and didn't really need a director's cut. I would much of much preferred a Rocky V director's cut as that film is very flawed and rushed. The reason why the Rocky character resonates with a global audience so much is because he represents the everyman's desire to to escape their harsh reality and reach his full potential. We all have goals and aspirations and most of us sadly never achieve those goals and aspirations. Rocky represents the end result of making your goals and aspirations into a reality.

Think I still prefer the original overall but I did really like this new Director's Cut. It's a very fun and interesting companion piece to the original.

cant fix something that isnt broken to begin with. I love Sly and he is brilliant at what he does. BUT the OG movie was perfection.

I did really enjoy the new cuts of the fights mostly, but my god was some of the sound editing of the original just handled very badly. Like in the original they had the following: Reporter - Apollo what made you decide to put on an exhibition fight with Drago? Apollo - Oh lets go with a sense of responsibility Now in new version Reporter - Apollo what made... (now before he can even get the full question out) Apollo - Oh let's go with a sense of responsibility Just one of the examples of the bad sound editing. It was the same with the commentator dialogue during the fight. A lot of it has been cut really badly. Lines like "Rocky Balboa has done the impossible" To me this was a very mixed bag. Like Rocky and Apollo's conversation whilst watching the Rocky 2 fight has been cut down severely and it has no flow and feels very unnatural now Cutting out pretty much all of Brigette Nielsen is really petty imo on Sly's part and really affects the movie. Such as now they no longer ask about steroids during the demonstration so when it shows the needle going into his arm it is no longer as effective as it once was. Like you I loved the funeral scene and I enjoyed pretty much all the new scenes even the one with Apollo and Rocky out front as it was just great spending more time with them (it's really the only additional moment with them in the whole movie so it helps it seem like they are closer). Cutting out things like the announcer introducing Apollo as 'Master of Disaster" and even cutting out the announcer introducing Rocky at the fight just baffles me. If you put the new scenes in the original cut of Rocky IV and maybe change some of the shots with Apollo's wife and Adrian's reaction during Living In America that would have been enough for me. Also the ending really fell flat to me with Rocky just walking back to the locker room. Especially when you take into account the opening of Rocky V. Ha sorry it sounds like I hated it, I didn't. Like I said a VERY mixed bag. Loved the new stuff, but just flabbergasted that he took out so much of the old stuff (even Rocky saying to Apollo "you forget something" before he puts in the mouthpiece). When really it didn't need THAT much tinkering

I was waiting for your review. Wife and I saw it in the theater. Was a full house, which says something. I thought the original was perfect. Like so many others 4 has resonated with me since I was 5 on so many levels. Loyalty, hard work, discipline, friendship, family and patriotism. We both loved the new cut. The new opening with sweetest victory playing was excellent, awesome song from the soundtrack that wasn’t in original. Apollo’s longer scenes now were great, but I didn’t mind the robot. The Apollo fight was much better, more brutal and hard to watch actually. The funeral was heartbreaking. Seeing his kids, Dukes warrior speech and rockys words made me tear up. It’s a treat for us as fans to have both to enjoy. And watching on the big screen was an experience that will never be topped.

Give it time, someone will edit the original with the new version and make a 2 hour version! 😆🤟

Can’t wait until this comes out over here. It will be good to see more depth and emphasis on character. When the last version came out, cinemas full of Brits got up and cheered when Rocky finally brought Drago down. This almost never happens.

I enjoyed the new version, especially seeing it on the big screen with the sound effects. I even enjoyed the ending more in the new one. However, I prefer the original version without question. On a side note, I find it funny that Stallone cut out most scenes involving his ex wife, Brigitte Nielsen.

I absolutely LOVED this director's cut. As much as I grew up on the theatrical version, this one does such a better job of tightening the narrative, plus the new clips of training, especially the jump rope shot is just EPIC! Stallone is a BEAST!

I like the added scenes. It gave Adrian, and Apollo more of a character arc in the movie. Overall it felt more like a Rocky movie but at the same time something felt left out, like something was missing.

I really enjoyed the director's cut. We all know sly is genius in many ways. That being said, I feel he gave the movie more depth as a whole. Extended Apollo fight was very fair to his character. I could go on and on. But as for a remake, he really nailed it.

I’m a rocky 4 fan. Rocky 4 was my bible. I collected the cards and created a photo album when I was younger. I know and love rocky 4. And this cut is better. Less filler and more rocky vs drago story. To me it’s better and it’s the one to see from now on.

killing off apollo was the equivalent of killing off optimus prime in The Transformers The Movie (1986)

I still prefer the theatrical cut but this was still fantastic and I'm so glad we have it. I think it actually goes well with creed 2 more

Did you notice that in the new cut the Soviet governors no longer clap Rocky after his speech? They all just walk out when they hear everyone in the audience start to clap.

I was really happy to see that new version of Rocky 4. I have to say i really enjoy the tone more in the new version everthing have more impact, and they re edited the fights so with rocky the fight with drago is more even all along. the only thing i did not like was the car montage i felt there was too much images and some images emotions did not fits the mood of the song. The training montage tho i have to say i found it more epic the way he reedited it.

I’m glad we have both versions but I like the new one more. The original cut was made too family friendly. The directors cut was way more brutal in my opinion.

Just watched Rocky vs Drago and I enjoyed it but I prefer the original version. I felt it did do the fights better, in the original Rocky looked like he didn't belong in the same ring as Drago at the start and any sane ref would've stopped the fight. In the new version he was losing at the start but was getting some punches in and keeping it competitive.

I honestly didn't care for this version to the original. He cut out Pauly from this movie essentially. The Alternate scenes were not better and the music, even though the same songs, also had an alternate version. The scenes removed hurt the movie. He put "Eye of Tiger" at the end which was just wierd. Drago's entrance was better. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Rocky Vs Drago was outstanding

Unlike me? I saw it 1985 in the cinema and had the soundtrack. I worked it all out on piano too.

Rocky IV, was the first Stallone movie I Ever saw in the theater. Imagine the impression for a 9 year old. Growing up the visuals are still impressive but it pales in comparisson to Rocky and Rocky Balboa storywise, and I always joke about the fact that this is more suitable for the MTV generation as it is montage after montage. I welcome any changes Sly can do to improve it. I saw Rocky 4 only like 10,000 times. It won’t hurt to see a new version of what could have Been.

I would love for Stallone to Direct and write a Drago movie how his life was before the events of Rocky 4 would be interesting to see

Honestly not sure why Sly decided to do a directors cut on Rocky 4 considering how much money it made on its original release and was considered a huge success. If he had done a directors cut on Rocky 5 then I could understand but I guess Rocky 5 would not have gathered as much interest.

I was fortunate to see the original back in 85’ as well as the new cut in theater. I love the pacing of the fights in the new cut better. Got rid of some of the goofy sound effects (ex: the weird dinosaur roar during the slow-mo head punches) and added some amazing bass heavy sound effects to the emphasize the pivotal punches. Love that Apollo put up more of a fight and the final bout didn’t seem as overly one-sided which I also think was a good change. I do appreciate Viking’s thoughtful analysis and you do make some solid points.

The new footage in The Director's Cut was cool, but Stallone changed too much for my liking by deleting a bunch of scenes. The theatrical version is better.

I thought Duke took over as his mentor which i really liked. In the original, before the last round, his motivational speech was great and I thought gave even more of a sense of urgency. That wasn’t in the new cut.

Original was better maybe because its what i grew up with, there were editing mistakes in the second. I've made my own cut cuz i do love the new scenes, I left everything in and added everything else. Some scenes were tough to do. The new funeral speech was better so left that in. I changed the intro completely for better or worse.

I enjoyed this version very much, will want to see it again to see how it shapes up against the original, I am very happy that Sly did this, it gave all of us something to look forward to during these difficult times going on right now,

Probably the best version would be a mix of both versions. A few cuts I thought were sorely missing. Drago's wife and Paulie got the shaft. I missed her "you have this belief that you are better than us" rant. I suspect Stallone was trying to steer away from Cold War themes as much as possible. The interplay with Rocky's son could've stayed too; I always enjoyed seeing 'rich' Rocky as a kid and enjoying his life. The two most shocking moments for me was when Rocky fist bumped Drago as if to say he forgave him. This kinda sorta contradicts Creed II. The second was seeing the Soviet Premiere walk off pissed off instead of changing and applauding. That speaks volumes in this version. There is no getting through to hardened Communists this time.

Watched a couple times now. Got it yesterday. What they added was fine but I can see why it was cut for the most part. Yes graveyard scene is definitely the highlight. I think though graveside scene is the only scene improved. Didn’t think Sly was as spot on with his speech as you think perhaps. All the other scenes that were changed are not as sharp in the recut namely Creed/Drago press conference and Rocky Adrian scene at the house after fight against Drago is announced. And yes “No Easy Way Out” not as strong.

It bothers me that Drago's wife (Sly's ex wife Bridget Neilson) is almost completely removed from the film. Also, I prefer the Survivor song at the end of Rocky IV versus bringing back Eye of the Tiger for the ending. Overall, it is worth the watch but I'll take the theatrical cut as my version of choice.

I was lucky to have watched both versions in the theater with that being said i do prefer the directors cut to the original and character development Alone.

I loved the original way better. I felt like the directors cut used alternate scenes just for the sake of using alternate scenes. Some of the edits are so sloppy.

I didn't see the directors cut yet but i thought the robot scene in the original worked perfectly. That's what really rich people do buy things likes robots and Lamborghini's especially people who grew up poor then became rich. plus it just adds to the fact that rocky went from super poor to super rich then directly after this movie back to poor again and lost everything, and this movie was from the 80s even before cell phones rich people had robots in their homes. looking back at it i bet people back then thought by now robots would be common in households like cell phones became cheap enough where everyone has one but that never happened yet. i just thought that scene worked so well to show realistically what a poor person would buy when they became rich and even though rocky 5 was the worst of the series it showed also what happens sometimes to athletes when they lose all there wealth.

I saw it a few days ago and I liked it. There was some additional dialogue where I saw why it wasn't included in the theatrical version, but I prefer the director's cut over the original version.

What worked worked and what didn’t work really didn’t work. Chopping the living room scene and making it shorter and removing dialogue really was a downgrade for me. Especially that living room scene with Apollo and Rocky. It didn’t need to be edited like that. There is a lot about the new cut I like, but this part disgusted me. Definitely room for a fan edit just for that scene because the original living room scene had more impact. I liked the alternate scene of stand in my corner - but the rest didn’t need to be changed in that particular scene. Overall, I like the fight scene edits and I love Adrian being the focus more than Rocky’s son. I wish there was a way to keep the catcher mitt scene in without having to acknowledge the robot. Or the Adrian anniversary scene. There were some great improvements in certain fight scenes. Even the Rocky Balboa edit with the first knockout and a 75 year old Stallone doing a voice-over was okay. However, this seriously needs a fan edit in certain places.

I agree, the original is better. Though the original has flaws, they kinda give it its innocent charm. The fact that Drago was such an iceman originally was very much in line with the 80s Cold War theme. And though I get why he made the beginning more about Apollo, it kinda breaks tradition with the other films which show the final fight of the previous film, not its whole plot. The magic is still there though.

I was 19 when Rocky 4 was released. I remember the theater being silent when Apollo died. I really enjoyed Rocky vs Drago. Once Rocky vs Drago comes out on blu-ray it will sit on my shelf along with the original.

I enjoyed the Director's Cut, but I thought it was going to basically be Rocky 4 with a 40 minutes of new scenes cut in and the robot crap cut out. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed the Director's Cut and there's definitely a place for both editions.

I was 12 when i saw it in the theater people were sitting on each others lap it was so crowded.

Having grown up with watching the theatrical cut I have to say the director's cut is vastly superior. It feels more like a Rocky movie in the context of the series. Rocky IV always felt very different. A subtle change I like in the directors cut is when Duke objected to Rocky not having access to sparring partners. True to Rocky's character, he took his major set back in stride and told Pauly he didn't think he needed (sparing) anymore. Knowing deep down, he is at a massive disadvantage. In the theatrical cut, without Duke's objection, Rocky comes across as arrogantly proclaiming he doesn't need sparing partners anymore. I always felt, that was out of character for Rocky.

I’m going to see this on the 25th. It will be the first time I’ve ever seen Rocky 4 at the cinema.

I think when you do a directors cut of a film like this you leave all the original stuff in alone with all the new stuff. It’s for true fans who will watch a 2 hour version. He should face it, like it or not the robot is part of the movie. As well Dragos wife, his ex wife. It all should have stayed. Disappointed it’s advertised as 40 more minutes when it’s really not. It’s a replaced 40 minutes. The Rocky 5 work print is way better then the theatrical version. They butchered that movie from what it could have been. Still like it though. My least favorite is Rocky Balboa. Tarver was a terrible choice for a foe. He was trash in that movie. Morrison was far better in 5.

I think most are used to the original but this new one would have been better and make more sence if it was the original because the apollo extra scenes make so much more sense

I've just watched it, it only became available today in the UK (on Amazon Prime Video anyway). I really enjoyed, very different tone but I do think he could have left some of the original scenes in and made it a 2hr film. The end fight was brutal, some of those new clips were brilliantly done. One hook actually looked and sounded real. Overall, very good.

Loved the new cut. It feels more in tone with the rest of the series, which I loved. The funeral scene was way better. Stallone's performance felt more impactful too. New Apollo and Adrian scenes were cool. This awesome flick just because even better because now it has what was missing. The drama and heart.

As a complete Rocky fan, I have to say, the first "Rocky IV" was much better. The opening of this one was good - but I prefer the Apollo/Rocky fight at the start in Mick's Gym. Overall, the feel of the movie was lost. There was very little humor (most of Paulie was cut out). The movie just did not flow well at all. I felt most of the "new" scenes were left on the original editor's floor because they simply were not good acting (can Dolph say "Drago" any weirder??). I left the theater glad I go to see Rocky on the big screen one more time - but not pleased with the "new" version of the film.

Great for martials arts and I definitely want to plug gripper tools for strength and man they are addictive. Hard to believe bruce Lee was into these things way back in 1973 . Liked it better. They cut out the robot. Brigete Neilsen was cut for the most part and the son watching at home was cut. The fights were better. Even the Apollo fight was better
