The piezoelectric material is under the strip of copper and thicker than most disc types , probably Barium titanate. The disc type has a basic wash of the material on a brass disc covered with a flash of silver to solder the positive lead to . In these bar types the copper is the positive connection . They can be cut and if good with a soldering iron extended too to make say , a Chapman Stick or even a piano or make single piezo saddles using the material and the positive conductor as the bridge with be the ground , only one thin positive wire is needed from each saddle . The piezo material Notches quite easily to hold the string . You can make and cast your own piezo material for a custom shape using simple ingredients found in the kitchen . Creme of Tartar , Sodium Bicarbonate and Isopropyl alcohol. In 120ml water add 80 gas Creme of Tartar and hold at 95°C in a water bath . Add 1gm Sodium Bicarb at intervals until the reaction stops . Filter off solution onto a ceramic plate . Add 20ml of IPA 5 times at 10 minute intervals and air dry . The resulting crystals can be press formed into any shape you want .

Thanks man. Now I don’t have to rip one apart and ruin it just to see what makes it tick. Like I’ve done to many many things since I was a little kid.

Hello. I was looking forward to replace the saddle in my guitar which has this kind of rod piezo and I've red over there that this kind of pickups work better with plastic than bone, any thoughts? Thanks!

So what part of a rod piezo pickup don't you understand now? Clean, clear, and to the point. Excellent Video. Thanks!

Did you use an ohm meter to determine in fact if the red lines on the ferrite were positive or negative? Also was the copper strip positive or negative in relation to which part of the 1/8" jack? It looks like the (-)ground goes to the copper strip.

I want too swap under-saddle piezo for stick-on under bridge so as too bring down action, this video has helped just don't know which wire to connect , there's only two so 50/50 chance.

i’m wanting to sand down an under saddle to save $100. for some reason the narrow is significantly more expensive than a wide

I'm confused. You say the copper plate should not touch the metal casing, yet they are soldered together. To me it seems like the white wire is connected to the positive side of the piezo's that rests on the metal (within the tape), while the copper, and metal housing, are connected to the negative side (ground)? I need to repair my piezo rod due to a poorly soldered wire, and knowing what goes where would surely help. Thank you!

I think the copper that is outside and the metal frame acts as the "shield and negative terminal"; there is another conductor inside where the tape is that acts as the positive terminal for the piezo elements.

Thanks for posting, Tom Stringham. At about 4:00, you pointed out the red line as positive, more info on that would be appreciated (before you popped the crystal out, no red or gray line was evident). Suggestion: place a spot of tape on the table to keep the item from going off screen. Ay! frustrating. Otherwise, thank you beddy mooch!

Sorry about that, right at 3:48 there is a little glimps of it as I just pealed back the top layer. the crystals are marked so they all are oriented the same way, I am guessing these are hand assembled.

The piezo elements have a right side for up and down?
@imagineform
@imagineform 4 года назад
Yeah, they are polarized, there’s a lot red mark on one side of them
@MarcioAugustoGuitarra

The side with red mark is the side for strings?
@imagineform
@imagineform 4 года назад
I don’t think that matters, it’s just so they are all oriented the same way.

Just bought this thingy but the audio plug do not get into a regular 3.5 mm jack. What size is this jack?
