A film without a love interest sustained by an incredible performance on the part of Rod Steiger and a dog called Dolores. Both deserved to win an Oscar for their talent! Gripping to the end......

What I don't get is how the timing is so current. Old movies seem to drag, they seem stilted a bit -- it's the style changes over all these decades. Just like serious music, surely. This doesn't seem to have aged at all. It's an amazing under-estimator.

I liked him best when he played Napoleon in "Waterloo" (1970) - the early scene was my favorite when the Emperor lands back in France in the spring of 1815 - and dares the soldiers sent to arrest him to open fire. We know from history the French soldiers loved their Emperor and rallied immediately to his side including Marshal Ney who told the king he would bring Napoleon back to Paris in a cage.

I am sitting here now, with a capuchino, in a lovely home. I have a wonderful career. I have two wonderful children, my daughter is studying chemistry in fact, she is involved in the current pandemic. My son, is studying anthropology. WHAT are YOUR accomplishments but to inspire hate and cruelty towards good people? I truly started this banter for my own admitted sick entertainment. To pick on you for being such a dolt. However, it has evolved into something that I am deeply sorry for. Picking on such a pitiful person as yourself. You need to consider, perhaps you are wrong. WRONG in everything you think of or inspire. PLEASE, do something nice for another as a start. You might find it rewarding. Perhaps maybe, start with your own self. Truly, I wish you good mental health and a desire to share a GOOD word for another. M

Rod Steiger, was a truly superb performer, he always seemed to take on difficult roles, that would have been complex and demanding for any actor. Thanks Rod for the memories.........

So different to his role in 'In the Heat of the Night' but I have to admit I haven't seen that many of his movies but yeah, great casting, great actor and a great movie released in the year of my birth. One of the most enjoyable movies I have watched during this Covid sitout. The other thing that I realised after the movie had ended was that there were no winners in the movie, maybe the Mexican police chief with his 50% share of the reward, but Steiger's character died as did Scarfe. Dolores the dog, poor thing lost two masters, Scotland Yard didn't get 'their man', that's no win. Mrs. Scarfe the widow had an unknown future. The American truck driver didn't get his reward and lost again trying to return Steiger's character across the bridge. Graham Greene was a very smart writer.

Torment is bad enough. Invasive torment is quite another. One is in the shadow of Hitchcock then. Only one man can rescue from thence. Mel Brooks. In my wildest, i imagine a movie with movies within: that Graham Greene's "Our Man In Havana" is inadvertently licensed duplicately, that unknownst to one another the Greene giant's Cold War satire is being put to silver screen simultaneously by Alfred the Great and Blazing Brooks. I do believe quite a picture could be made with those elements. Who to direct?

Loves animals. Ignores people. Great. Dont tell us we dont understand. Frend ours breeds dogs. Heres a reply from a dog groomer- "F-Off Idiot".Yeah fantasy is good till you believe it. The wonderful cops/courts and the bad criminals.Go on. Just ignore what follows (as usual)..-- 9.3.20 UK.Not spell or proof checked. Wonder why people wanna sit watching corruption, violence, smarm and carefully assembled propaganda when the scams are goin on all round the viewers. We refer,in UK to- corruption in- HM courts. HM Coroners. HM Police. HM Parliament. HM (and private) Education. HM Universities. HM Prisons. The media incl - BBC. Mirror Group.CH4. Guardian.Mail. Local Press.. The Charities and charity commission board. Sport. Health.EEC. Acting. How do we know that? We spent 12 yrs traipsing London streets knocking on doors and approaching joe public on behalf of victims, some victims had been tortured by establ in uk. We nearly forgot- at least three political orgs. orgs who admitted to us the intention to engage in corruption. 1000pp. We are experiencing Police attacks. They are advising us that the Religions and Local govt want 7us silenced. They also advised that the eidence which we gathered can never be put into hands of public. They also claim that the dont read evidence. Here is a quote by Local Govt- "We dont care about the public so you had better watch out". Dozens more quotes incl the "Old Bailey" admitting we are right and the Shrink (at the hospital that we contacted after their clients started coming to us for help) said this- "Competence has no value" Her staff said this- "She has killed people and the local HM Courts. Charities. Coroner. Local govt. Press have covered it up". We started to pursue the culprit and suddenly she was moved to Broadmore and we could not get into there but could get into High Secuity Prisons. When we turned up at the HM Coroner in Westminster they were hiding behind curtains and some ran out withy the police and ran towards Victoria Station. We then started to experience the Police attacks. One day a whole gang people turned up with an ambulance and we were invited to get into it.. We had just treturned from doing state of the art work on one of their "clients" who had been confined to his dwelling for over 6 yrs. In the space of 3 hours he grabbed a coat and disappeared into the night , returning an hour later. When he dashed out there was a thud and we noticed a woman lying on here back the other side of what was a closed door. she ran out too. All of this incl the "raid" was predicted. We were told not to resolve anyones mental health issues because the work interferred with finacial gains. We indict also the Insurance Industry. The indictment is Establishment Manslaughter. 1000s are involved. We refer to 30.000 deaths over 35 yrs. 1000s Court cases are void. Also implicated is F-Book and Yahoo and many others. The press system has said that none of this text can ever appear in print in UK.The BBC advised "Hide The Documents Abroad". The text represents statements of fact, truth reality. This is a legal document and its not lawful to destroy it without action. No UK HM Member of Parliament will answer questions. No University or student likewise. 50 Police were given huge amounts eidence and didnt reply. Also implicated is a Dimbleby family member who is involved with media of course. No reply from Lottery Board re the multitrillion malfunding.. The Educ Minister is a "MP" for the area which is full of corruption. No wonder we were obliged to employ bodyguards. The public? They tell us this- "Its Nothing To Do with Me". Did we not notice that going on in 133-45. The fact is is killed millions and the description applied is "Appeasement". But dont let this worry you particularly if your new kitchen is planned. Heres another quote- "If Only It Was Not My Brother In Laws Wedding Anniversary I Would Have Time Top Rescue You From Certain Death".. Anyone for a game of squash make sure you have a racket. Yes weve seen thgese movies and is that hypocrisy ? No it isnt We do it when we are too exhausted to do antthing else but, having been involved for many yrs in Cent London theater, TV and other we dont kid ourselves about actors or film makers. We had 100s "friends" or did we. Theres never ever been a "film" about the corrupt police Home Office or the HM Court system. Theres just the one bent policeman now and then. The reader ought to have been with us when we had to employ b-guards to stop the Establ killing us. But, it needs more than an evnin watching junk to do that.Wheres the film about the HM involverments and the schools and religions. We could not find a mainstream religion that was not crrpt. We repeat no replies from 1000 mailas sent to HM Govt. Local Govt. HM Courts. HM Princes "trust". HM CPS. HM Bar council. HM MPs. The F-Book Org erasing or blocking mails and accounts cos they fund crrpt Universities. The Lufthasa Crash cover up 144+ deaths implicates all the listed orgs plus the psychlogical society plus of course the CEO who when asked for next of kin list sent offers of cheap flight tickets.(Cologne Office) By the way after WW2 dedicated Nazis were given key jobs in EEC and Germany. One of the clowns was orig wanting to destroy Russia except for slave material. This week we just realised that The Baarder Meinhoff group was not wrong in its theory but they went about it wrongly. They did what we did, that is completely underestimate the publics ability to go along with anything that suits their incomes. The physicist Einstein declared that in the 1950s but the public ignored it.The EEC Office Cent London told us this- "Nothing Can Be done about Corruption In Europe". . Latest from the Police? - Nobody should be warned about danger if they have not requested it. If you see someone drowning you must not help without their request. Thata what comes of insanity within Psychiatry/psychology.Who is to blame ? Its you. Why?. Ask

'Steiger was particularly aggressive towards director Kenneth Annakin during the making of Across the Bridge, insisting on rewriting most of the script and changing many of the lines to better fit Steiger's idea of the character. Annakin stated that he had "never known an actor to put so much thought and preparation into a performance" as Steiger.' Wikipedia

Bernard Lee showed up at the end of Beat The Devil to arrest Peter Lorre and three other outstanding co-star bad/funny guys. B.L.'s resolute persona is put to a lot more work in this flick ... which is quite the drama; demonstrates a man's conniving heart changed by a dog's devotion. Good show Rod Steiger; especially for reminding us to be kind to animals. Thank you Retro.

Rod Steiger had an intensity that came from deep within him. He reminds me of the actor Gene Hackman who also brought a lot of intensity to whatever character he was playing. I rememberr Rod Steiger from way back in the late 1950's when I saw the great musical Oklahoma!, and he played a farm hand who went nuts when the pretty farm girl didn't return his feelings that he had for her.

Having an ordinary appearance has never been a drawback for actors in English made films it seems to me. It may in fact be an advantage to some unsurprisingly since the majority of the population is of ordinary appearance.Though Hollywood seems frequently to see a handsome or beautiful face as a necessity in an actor, English film makers seem generally to cast according to acting skill.

Helen Lauer He’s is a COMPETENT actor but very limited in his scope. Look at the movies he made, like this one he played a mean, unstable PSYCHO and he was good at that. In The Heat of the Night he was almost human it was one of his better performances, even in Oklahoma he played Judd a mean, unstable loner that suited my description of him. He is a VERY LONG WAY from your claim of one of the finest actors in movies. Oh I just remembered in The Comancheros he once again played a PSYCHO, and then there was his performance as Napoleon who was a text book example of an unstable PSYCHO. Rod was perfect for the part but once again it confirmed that he was a one horse actor. A GREAT actor? NO, competent yes.

Uh, what's his name Richard Gere is SUPER competent. But Steiger is not in that league, he's way higher up there, hanging just below Brando. He's so damned intense, how can you call that competent. Extraordinary film. The genius of Rod Steiger is hard to match. I did find it extremely difficult to watch for the degree of violence between men, but also, because Delores was loyal to the Steiger character and, therefore, also an outcast, to the degree that no one seemed willing to feed her or treat her at all humanely. Perhaps this was designed to tug at our heartstrings and teach a valuable lesson: this compassionate dog was more moral than the entire cast of ‘human’ characters.

Its you. Why?. Ask.@@acornsucks2111
