Ever since I was a kid in school I messed around with all the rules Apologized, then realized I'm not different after all Me and the boys thought we had it sussed Valentinos all of us My dad said we looked ridiculous But, boy, we broke some hearts In and out of jobs, running free Waging war with society Dumb, blank faces stared back at me But nothing ever changed Promises made in the heat of night Creepin' home before it got too light I wasted all that precious time And blamed it on the wine I was only joking, my dear Looking for a way to hide my fear What kind of fool was I? I could never win Never found a compromise Collected lovers like butterflies Illusions of that grand first prize Are slowly wearin' thin Susie, baby, you were good to me Giving love unselfishly But you took it all too seriously I guess it had to end I was only joking, my dear Looking for a way to hide my fear What kind of fool was I? I could never win Yeah, baby, woo Now you ask me if I'm sincere That's the question that I always fear Verse seven is never clear But I'll tell you what you want to hear I try to give you all you want But giving love is not my strongest point If that's the case, it's pointless going on I'd rather be alone 'Cause what I'm doing must be wrong Pouring my heart out in a song Owning up for prosperity For the whole damn world to see Quietly now while I turn a page Act one is over without costume change The principal would like to leave the stage The crowd don't understand

Discovered this song just weeks ago. I got to see him in Vegas twice, but never heard of this song. Awesome solo and a message that applies to any age between first love and future loss.

I had this album. This was my favorite song. I played it over and over again. I was so in love with Rod Stewart. Good memories. I grew up in an abusive alcoholic home. I really related to the lyrics about not knowing how to give love. And just kind of floating through life. Incredible song writer.

Give me a minute to pick myself off the floor.. Just to clarify are you trying to make a salient point about the egregious business practices of RU-vid.. well I’m sorry sir. This forum is only to ask is you are listening to said song in the current year. I like you man, but your swimming against the tide on that one

Michael. this was more than a theme song, it hit on so many facets of growing up in a time of freedom. "My dad said we looked ridiculous" , how many times did we hear that... "but we broke some hearts"! One of those snog's you sing along with knowing every word!!

Just love his voice! The first concert I saw here in the States, at 17, 1977 Greensboro coliseum, NC. What a show he put on! He was running all over the stage. During one part he was kicking soccer balls to the crowd! He was a player like many British guys.

An absolute masterpiece through and through evoking both laughter and tears from a 63 y/o turning a corner and knowing it- like being blind folded in a car- but still can sense a bend coming Final phase scary shit and music is the medicine With reflecting on an early 1970's teenage @@ "in and out of jobs running free"......................... Fantastic guitar solo with overlaps various types of guitars on the same riffs just brilliant and as a (former) player had this off after lots of effort and practice to the point "Suzy baby" * going mad Recently frozen the use of my left hand due to mild stroke perhaps there are adaptive alternatives but not the same meanwhile I feel George Harrison "my guitar gently weeps" *Maggie O'Brien 1977/78 "giving love unselfishly" xx Brilliant Rod a fantastic expression and era to be young Foot Loose and Fancy Free would not change for anything. Thank You.
