Super helpful comparison. I currently have the Rode VideoMic for my a6500 but am considering switching to this (the micro) or the Pro due to length of the mic; keeping it out of wide angle shots. Have you had any problems with that previously?

Hi Christopher, I own the Rode VideoMicro too and realised that most shotgun microphones have echo and reverb issues when used indoors although perfect for outdoors when your subject is in front of it. Once I was recording in a cafe indoors and the dialogue was actually overwhelmed by the ambient noises. Perhaps a lavalier may be slightly more helpful in this type of situation - I can't confirm as most lavalier mics are omnidirectional. Would be interesting to see if you have a chance to test it!

Chris questions why someone would record audio with this mic when the subject is 15+ ft. away. Answer: I use this mic for reference/scratch audio only. Meaning, I use it to help me align my on-set or ADR audio that I recorded using my external audio recorder.

At 03:28 the camera is cutting the sound like it's stuttering. Is that expected with an external mic? I get that a lot with the videomicro with the dead cat on. But when I use the videomicro on my phone in high wind, you can hear the wind a lot, fine, but it's not stuttering, cutting like that.

At 4:03 you say you don't know who would wish to use the mike that far away from the subject - I am searching for the best on Camera Mike to shoot events - i.e Kids playing around and jumping into a large swimming pool - at beach barbecue parties where people are spread around - at various indoor dinner functions etc etc - where I would also be commentating from behind the camera - do you think the Rode VideoPro might be OK? or any other suggestions
@ChristopherBurress
@ChristopherBurress 6 лет назад
+Ron Powell you may get decent long range results if you boost the in camera recording levels. But as far as an on camera mic goes. I don't think that they get very good for long range recording. This should do just fine for your case

I've got the Micro for my a6300 but I think it's incredibly frustrating that you can't change the audio levels in the manual or preset settings. I've got my 1 and 2 presets set to 4k 24fps and 1080 120 but I can only capture incredibly blown out audio on the mic because I can't change the levels. What's with that??
@timsalton
@timsalton 5 лет назад
Josh I was frustrated about the same thing. I've got my audio levels assigned to one of my fn menu slots and it's always greyed out in the presets. However after you hit record the setting becomes accessible and you can change it. Try it out

@@ChristopherBurress I've always used only built-in. Never used a mic before. My cam is Canon 80D. I'm sure I've plugged it into the right mic port. I've checked again and again. Made recordings with built-in and with mic. EXACTLY the same audio volume and quality. No difference at all!
@ChristopherBurress
@ChristopherBurress 3 года назад
Well something isn't right because there should be a huge difference. Make sure the mic is plugged all the way in on the back of the mic. Make sure you can see your audio levels and bump the front of the mic to make sure that the audio is coming from the external mic and not the internal one.
@ChristopherBurress
@ChristopherBurress 3 года назад
The 80d has a mic, headphone and remote control jack that are all the same size. Ensure you are trying the correct one, maybe swith it up just to make sure that it's plugged into the right one.
