Rodger Penzabainee was born in 1945 in northwest Detroit near 8 mile, in Michigan to parents John Penzabainee, a steward, and Anna Cindy, a stay-at-home mother. He was of Sicilian and Irish descent and not African-American as it has been assumed by some. It is said that as a kid, he was the jovial, the extroverted type, and always good at everything. Whenever he met his cousins over at their maternal grandparents in Brockway Pennsylvania during the holidays, he was the clear standout amongst them. No one could dance like him, no one could play the piano like him despite him never taking any piano lessons. And it’s because he was a Detroiter, the vibrant city full of life.

Thank you Thank you THANK YOU for this SAD yet INSIGHTFUL post. I was first made aware of this tragic story when I was going through my first meaningful heartbreak at the age of 25 and I had this song on a mixtape that I had made for myself to help me through it all. When I learned that the writer had supposedly taken his own life after writing this heavy heartfelt beautiful MASTERPIECE it helped me put my own troubles in perspective. It actually made me hurt less for myself and more for him. The fact that he didn’t live long enough to find out what a AWESOME contribution his song has made to the history of music still hurts me to this very day! I am FOREVER grateful to his lyrical genius, forever Rest In Peace Mr. Penzabene and “Thank you”!

I am a connoisseur of Motown since I learned to speak. I like to pride myself on my extensive knowledge of Motown and it's in the workings and its artists. But on this person I drew up short. I am so grateful for information, that through your post, I've been informed. Rodger was a great and talented songwriter, who was seemingly at the beginning of what surely would have been a massive career in songwriting. Haven't seen the name on credits of many of the records that I have I know it but I did not know the story behind it. He won't be forgotten that's for sure. I'd like to thank whoever it was who made this post you did an excellent job I'm truly grateful thank you.😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

When Temptations' members were interviewed (Melvin Franklin, for one) tells Rodger's story. To teenagers, these songs were jams, fun to listen and dance to. David Ruffin's delivery is icing on the cake. It is when you become an adult, you know what the words are truly saying. And they become more touching when you find the words are from the writer's actual life.

Wow. Such a powerful story about this wonderful talented gifted man. And there could not have been a better narrator who told this story with determined passion. The Motown days were my mother's era and I grew up hearing all the songs and even dancing to them I discovered Rodger yesterday, a day or two after the last living Four Tops member, Duke Fakir, passed. My mother loved the Four Tops. Anyway, I strolled down Mowtown Lane to see who did what and when and was checking out the Temptations. That's when I discovered RODGER PENZABENE was the writer for one of their classic hits "I Wish It Would Rain". I was blown away to find out a non-African American wrote the lyrics 😯and that he killed himself. So Sad. Thank you for this story, Thank you Rodger for your contribution and I pray your spirit is comforted. RIP Rodger 🙏😯

'I Could Never Love Another, After Loving You' has always been one of my favorite Temptations songs, along with 'I Wish It Would Rain'. (Man, David Ruffin had one of the greatest voices we'll ever have the pleasure of hearing.) I was familiar with him only as a liner note in one of The Temptations compilation albums. He was mentioned as a collaborator with Barrett Strong and Norman Whitfield, who wrote a few songs and ended his life at a young age due to a failed relationship. Nice and kinda sad to get more details on him. He left us with some timeless music that will echo for a long, long time. RIP.

I worked at both Motown, when it moved to Hollow-wood, on Sunset. Actually it was at two places in Hollywood and ended up on Sunset east of Vine. Years later, I worked at the music part of Motown, Jobete. I never heard this story, this very tragic story. Thank you for covering this special young man. It's hard to hear. However, what I do know is that there are wayyy too many tragic stories in the music industry. Roger and his wife were both sooo young and inexperienced. I can only imagine how challenging their lives were. RIP to Roger and his wife.

@brendathompson23: That's how we all were as teenagers. David Ruffin 's lead is the greatest. As teenagers, we didn't know the writer was talking about his own situation. I first learned about Mr. Penzabene was through Tempts' Melvin Franklin. Other than that, his name could be seen, as house songwriter, on many a great Motown song.

His family was against it, wonder if they blamed her after he did it. But to leave his two kids, no no. Love the Temptations and Supremes, best groups ever. You're my everything, wish it would rain. Did he also write get ready, my girl, just my imagination. Eddie, David and Paul were so handsome. Otis the only one left. Can see why Helga couldn't resist the artists. It'd be difficult to say no to Eddie Kendricks or Smokey Robinson although her husband was handsome too. They say women leave good men. They say love conquers all but he was too sensitive, she tough and it didn't work but maybe if he forgave her and if they got back together the marriage would have lasted. Also know after having failed relationships then finally getting a good guy who you love and who loves you and family don't agree can destroy the relationship. One person can stray and fall for someone else when you never expected to

Great story!! Berry Gordy ran Motown as a music production line in the same way the auto manufacturers ran their car production lines. He considered everyone a role player, doing that which made big hits. No one was bigger than that end product, and Gordy didn't care about anyone's welfare except Gordy's... Everyone was replaceable. If the Marvelettes didn't deliver to his satisfaction, he owned the songs, publishing, even the group name. and he would have four more Marvelettes next week. that was pretty much how the music industry was run then. Singers, musicians, writers were treated as cogs in a big money wheel! Sad...

Looking at different documentaries on Motown so many of those artists ended up bitter towards Berry Gordy. This must’ve been one selfish man to have worked under. Someone who had his favorite artist like Diana Ross, and Smokey Robinson. I’ve seen Eddie Kendricks in an interview from the late 80’s and a statement when asked about Gordy , and he said “ I never knew the man”. The Jacksons left Motown to have more say over their own music and other Motown acts. Just saying.🤔

Everything you said about Berry Gordy is true except for his obsession with Diana Ross. The other female singers at Motown could sing her under the table. Sleeping with the boss was her claim to fame; he would replace better singers before he would replace her.

@lindalawon9151

Somehow, I never thought of David Ruffin as the lead singer simply because 1) whenever singing, he was always straining and trying to sing at the tenor level; he bullied his way to snatching the microphone when he was fired; and his excessive cocaine use constantly caused his voice to be deteriorated. I never liked David Ruffin because of the way he constantly physically beat up women and his own son very brutally. The Temps deserve to be in the different Halls of Fame but not David Ruffin as he makes the industry look bad. The different Halls of Fame are special for special people.

I went through a very painful breakup when i was younger and the words of Rodgers songs hit like a brick. No thoughts of checking out but the pain was excruciating 😢 RIP young king.

All of this nicely placed eloquence of this wondeful story told back in time when that era was so golden 4 the many talents we now see as Legends & with this the truth no doubt hurts especially the hurt he felt after she cheated on him & in his life at that moment was sadly meaningless & the lyrics said it all "Your My Everything" but lost it all sadly by taking his own life over a Love that he truly believed in.

Hey family freddie here, Bro. Rodgers was our talented friend and as we lived our lives with his song remember with me the message that told us nothing is new under the sun for we all shared his experience and emotions in our own relationships loved that experience the good and the bad with out it we wouldn't have experienced the feeling and purpose of love. Rodger your songs are us at our best, nice work!

He was truly talented and will be missed. He wrote your my everything and I wish it would rain two of the Temptations biggest hits wow he deserves his flowers. This is what I got to say no of us was there but I’ll say this heart break effects people differently and men hurt as well we don’t get enough credit for it or what it does to your mental health so Rip Rodger gone but not forgotten.

I first heard I Wish It Would Rain by The Faces, and it rocked me. Straightaway I picked up the original by The Temptations. This song was my doorway to the Tempts, its a masterpiece.

Very informative story about other MOTOWN songwriter, i was familiar with the Super Talented trio of Holland, Dozier, Holland one of the most Famous of all of MOTOWN'S Greatest Songwriters, this is such a sad Story anyway you look at it😢Penzabene wrote some of the most beautiful songs for MOTOWN, he left this world much too soon 😢🙏, what an AMAZING TALENT he was ❤ any and all 60's songs recorded by the MIGHTY Temptations.

I remember when my second oldest brother came home with this album in 1967. He go drafted to Vietnam shortly afterward and had to go fight for this country. Well it was summer time and it was hot outside, locust hollering from the trees and the dirt road outside showed traces of heat from the hot sun . Nevertheless that album was played . I listened to every song learning every word. Then years later when kareoke had arrived I placed second in the contest of about 30 people singing My girl . Afterwards a young Spanish male said he believe I should try , I wish it would rain by the Temptations. I told him I was afraid of that because Ruffin put the stamp on that song .. Then I bought the Emperors of Soul by the Temptations. I read the makings of I wish it would rain. Remembering them saying the man took his life cause she cheated on him. And another son he had penned , ‘You’re my everything.. Suddenly I felt the need to take on these songs as an honor to the man that wrote them ..What a legacy Rodger Penzabene left us with and David Ruffin put his stamp on that song .. It's always discounted how people feel... heartache is very serious especially at a young age. He didn't feel included with the staff and yes that's what Fame will do with your friends. It's heartbreaking to hear his demise with pain and sometimes your choice is to stop the pain even if you choose to get off!! Once again the prey was just there to destroy no other reason ❤

Thanks for this tribute. S very talented man. The "I Wish It.Would.Rain" Album is my favorite of all the Temps recordings. Glad Norman Whitfield & Motown Records decided to release the Temptations version of "I Wish It Would Rain" over Marvin Gayes version. A classic. "Cindy" is on that album and is there some significance? Great.story.
