Handheld is all about convenience, unfortunately running windows is not. I bought the ally and returned it 3 days later, took too much time to set it up and update all the misc drivers. Picked up a steam deck and little to no effort I can start a game and enjoy. if I want high quality gaming, I go back to my gaming PC at home. Handheld is all about portability and ease of use. The Steam OS does just that. Plus the community support is just amazing. You can also install windows to run on the deck for games like COD warzone or using other games launchers too.

I agree with all the points however I would like to add that picking Steam Deck over Rog Ally will not forbid you from using it as your desktop replacement. Just like how Rog Ally is a full fledged windows machine, Steam Deck is a full fledged Linux machine. You can't go wrong with either devices and as far as I can tell, if you know what you are doing and if you are okay with linux, SteamOS is arguably the best Linux operating system there is right now. I can't wait for it to be released for everyone's personal use. Both are fantastic handhelds, the future will only be brighter for handheld gaming, I am so excited.
@filt3rless
@filt3rless 10 месяцев назад
I almost included that in the video. I had recorded it and cut it out. It can be used as a PC for some people, but I think it's just a small amount of people that would be okay with using Linux as their only machine. For those people though, the Steam Deck could work. The only other hindrance is the CPU performance is pretty low, so more demanding applications could struggle a bit.
@netrodex
@netrodex 4 месяца назад
Unfortunately no... not for normal users. Linux it's great on the steamdeck for gaming, but everything else... I've been in this hole it's a pain. I'm not a pro Linux user, and I don't wanna be, but I've learned a fair bit to make the programs I need to run on linux with wine or proton. It's not worth to hassle to me, and for most people it's not as well. I know you are gonna say I'm wrong, or defend Linux, but it's not ready to be a full fledge PC.

Now that you can get the ROG Ally for around $510 open box and the Steam Deck Oled for $549 new it really makes it a hard choice. I want the power and resolution of the ally but I want the battery life, Steam OS, and Oled screen of the Deck. But I think you stated it best, if you have a laptop or pc already that can play demanding games then a steam deck would be great for on the go gameplay. If you don't have a pc or laptop for demanding games then the ROG ally would be great choice for that. Since I have a gaming laptop already I think I'm going to have to go with the steam deck. I just trust Value and the steam community to keep the handheld alive for many years to come.
@filt3rless
@filt3rless 10 месяцев назад
I think you'll like the OLED :) If you were looking to replace your Laptop, the Ally can "almost" do that. But I think it's worth waiting for the next generation of handhelds as I'm assuming they'll have a bit more power ⚡️. And the OLED is a lot of fun to just pickup and play with older, and even some more demanding titles.

I have a rtx of the 4090 desktop and a powerful laptop and I use most the ally. Many of my fav games can not be played in the Steam deck and I found the battery the same in those devices...maybe if you play pokemon games and RTS games you should choose the steam deck. But SD is a 4 core cpu...in 2 years it will be meant for ps2 emulation only. The Ally is similar to an i9 11gen in terms of cpu performance. Why pay the same to get less?
@Kue27
@Kue27 10 месяцев назад
@@MicaelAzevedo I think for me the biggest reason is Steam os. I like windows but I also know how finicky it can be. On the deck it's just boot it up and play. Granted that's only the games that are supported on steam os but that list keeps on growing. Another big reason is the community, I really like how the community keeps developing mods and such to make the deck that much better and customizable. I'm quite surprised to hear that you experienced the battery to be about the same for the deck and the ally. Do you perhaps have the LCD version of the deck? I believe the oled deck got a greatly improved battery which is another pro. And you said many of your fav games can't be played? Is that because of the power or because it's not on steam? If it is because the games aren't on steam and are on another store like epic games then I think there are ways to get around that right? The ally is really tempting because of it's power and the low price but, honestly I think from what I saw of the steam deck's performance it will be enough for the type of games I like to play (tf2, csgo2, overwatch, gta5, forza, cyberpunk, indies, and emulators).

Right off the bat, the first reason to get an Ally is that it's a PC? That you can hook it up to a monitor and use it as a PC. Why would you word it this way? Are you being intentionally misleading? The Steam Deck has a full Linux based desktop mode and can also hook up to a monitor and accessories. If you meant it's a full "WINDOWS" PC then say that. Otherwise you're just lying to people that are trying to make informed decisions.
@filt3rless
@filt3rless 10 месяцев назад
Hey, this is more consumer friendly content. I do get people can (and do) use Linux as their primary OS. But for the vast majority of people, this isn't something they'd enjoy. The CPU performance alone on the SD would make it less than ideal as a PC replacement.
@Space_Monkey_Nation

I don’t see how misleading people is “consumer friendly”. All you had to do was mention Windows and Linux. Instead you painted it as if the Deck simply lacked this ability at all.
@filt3rless
@filt3rless 10 месяцев назад
@@Space_Monkey_Nation The purpose of referring to it as a full-blown PC is for individuals seeking a portable device they can use on the go and as their primary PC at home. It's also an option for those without a PC, especially those with budget constraints looking to invest in a single system. For most people the Steam Deck is not be the best choice for a main PC. While some may appreciate Linux, the majority of people wouldn't prefer using linux over windows. Mentioning that you can use the SD as a main PC would be very misleading to most people IMO and I'd feel terrible if someone bought it thinking that's all they needed. And by 'consumer,' I mean what 95% of people walking into an electronics store and stating, 'I need a new PC,' are looking for. With just a hub, the Ally becomes a desktop replacement. The 7840U pulls the same CPU score in Time Spy as my $1,700 G15 5980HX laptop.

@@filt3rless The Steam Deck is really underpowered when I hook up my 15 inch 144hz 1080p portable monitor. No way am I gonna play games in 720p on a 15 inch screen anyway. Valve never really sold it as a hybrid machine did they so you are correct not to state that it's good as a linux desktop gaming PC? Linux is not a great experience for me and it takes some getting used to. In the 15 months that I have owned my Steam Deck I just never really use desktop linux as I didn't like the experience at all. The ROG Ally is a different story as I can up the wattage and have a pretty good lower spec gaming laptop with that 15 inch 144hz monitor and my wireless Razer Blackwidow V3 Mini and Deathadder wireless. I use this combo when working away. Just wish that portable monitor was VRR because wow the ROG Ally is so much smoother in framerates. It’s a really tough choice. I’ve mostly been playing the Steam Deck as I like Steam OS a lot and the battery life is amazing. I also really like 4 back buttons as I always remap x, b, y, a to them (or other shortcuts sometimes). Quick resume is also an epic feature and when paired with great battery life, it’s even better. I do like the Ally’s extra performance, but when pushing 25+ watts it’s around 1 hour of battery. So I’ve come to enjoy the slightly lower performance, but much improved battery life of the Steam Deck. I have another video I just uploaded recently that compares the OLED and Ally at 12W and 15W.

I think these handhelds are trying to be too much. Yeah, you get more power on the ally and can play games like call of duty(with lower settings) but you can only do that for 45 minutes before having to plug it into a wall. Why not just play call of duty on an Xbox, ps5, or pc? It would be basically the same thing since they’re both tethered to a wall. You’d get better performance out of a console or computer too. These handhelds should be focused on playing more games that are suitable for heldhelds and the hardware should reflect that. Then they should be optimized for streaming so you can play those aaa games on the handheld without relying on the hardware. That’s why I think the steam deck oled is way closer to what a handheld should be over the ally and the legion go. It comes down to battery life and actually using it as a handheld. If you don’t want a handheld, then just buy a gaming laptop with a 13 or 14 inch screen. It would be easy to upgrade it later on, it’ll have way better battery life, and will run aaa games better than all the handhelds.
@filt3rless
@filt3rless 8 месяцев назад
I definitely think the OLED checks the handheld box really well. It's like a nintendo switch on steroids and let's you play most of your steam library. And being okay with 40-45FPS makes it so there is very little tweaking needed on the deck. Much more console like, like you said. I found setting a 45FPS cap and then "just playing" games has worked well. I find myself spending so much time tweaking settings on any windows device haha.

I have both to test and for me it comes down to battery and display. Colors and blacks are better on deck. Size of display and shine is amazing. But in some games aliasing is noticable, like Dragon Dogma, dark souls. In some oled looks better. Switch emulated games and colorful indies will look better on deck regardlerless of lower resolution on ally. I still cant decide. But all the talk about performance of ally, if you play native res on both machines you get the same fps. Slightly higher on deck

I had the OG LCD before but sold it coz of the huge and chunky feel of it, I have pretty small hands. I love the ally’s weight much much better. But now that everyone’s saying the OLED got a bit lighter than the LCD, plus the longer battery, I kinda want to go back to Steam Deck again. I love the Rog Ally but the battery life is really a turn off(for me, I mostly have to play plugged in. I’m really tempted with that OLED screen 😍. Idk I’m torn. Is there anyone here who did the same? Sold/returned the ally and got the SD OLED? I wonder what is your experience with it guys. Thanks. ❤

OLED ALL DAY. Pointless to have a handheld with ZERO battery life. Literally the whole point for a handheld. So all you Ally folks, that’s cool and all, go off. But battery is priority here for handhelds. Otherwise, you’re a fool trying make it work bc you should just be on pc. Let’s be real about it. Like fr fr.
@didjidks
@didjidks 10 месяцев назад
In the end it all depends on what games you play. If it's heavy AAA games and you can't tolerate 20-30 fps then go with ally. Otherwise Deck OLED is fine. However, another good point is wether or not you have a gaming PC. If you have it already then Deck OLED looks preferable. Better battery, control scheme, OLED and HDR will work well with streaming heavy games and normal play for anything else. As for Windows vs SteamOS its not an issue imo. You can install Win on Deck if you need it. Yes, you would need to spend some time configuring it, but there's enough comprehensive guides on the internet already, it's not a big deal.
@nathanjuan6042
@nathanjuan6042 9 месяцев назад
I don't think people should buy a deck just to install windows if there is already Ally that is windows out in the box at the same time more powerful. OLED is not even a big deal if it only has 800p or rather 720p you can easily tell that 1080p is sharper than 720p OLED doesn't make a difference rather than more saturated colors.

Hot take If you have "that" steaming gamer desktop, get the Asus Ally. If you're like me and just have a gaming laptop, get a Steamdeck. I say this because a laptop already has the gaming portability that Ally provides. It even took me a minute for me to buy into the Steamdeck hype until I had take a trip to Hawaii, then I bit the bullet. The battery lasted like 90% of the 6+hr flight (OG w/extermal battery). I only say this because the transition from a gaming desktop to a portable powerhouse would be less jarring with an Ally, than a SteamDeck, with the processing/resolution advantage. It's like having an Xbox and a PC, there's a lot of overlap in the "entertainment" Venn diagram when you can get a PS and XB or PC and get the best of both worlds. Ofc everyone has a different situational circumstance or priority. I'm not telling anyone how to spend their money, just my opinion. You can buy whatever you want. Or buy everything like that one filipino gamer dude lmao.

1:14 People need to understand each system is optimized for different levels of power draw. At 10 watts Steamdeck is still far and away the most powerful mobile PC ever built, Valve worked a miracle with their system level power optimization, oppositely at 20 watts the Z1E/7840u chipset will spank the pants off the Steamdeck running its hardest. In the end each system will work best with very different games and very different playstyles. Steamdeck OLED tuned for minimum power draw can play 2D games for over 10 hours, more than 3X longer than the ROG Ally: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GQkpJ1qPUVA.html But then if you want to play modern games at high resolution Steamdeck just won't cut it, the ROG ALLy or Legion Go will run 2x-4x more resolution than Steamdeck, but you'll probably get half the battery life.

@filt3rless 9 месяцев назад
Valve worked magic with it for sure. I have a huge benchmark I just ran with 20 games at 12w, 15w and then 30w on the Ally. The numbers the SD pulls at 12w is impressive. It’s be great to have a chip that can handle lower watts like the Steam Deck while still giving us the option to push the watts higher for more performance. I’m sure we’ll see some awesome improvements with handhelds in the future :)
@budthecyborg4575
@budthecyborg4575 9 месяцев назад
@@filt3rless Looking back over the video with battery drain tests, it looks like half the magic of Steamdeck actually has nothing to do with the processor and is just the total hardware optimization. On the 2D game test setting TDP to 4 watts it runs for over 10 hours, which means the screen, memory, motherboard, fan, all run on less than 1 watt? Unless the TDP is lying but there's so little wiggle room there. Meanwhile in that same test with the Legion Go, same battery size, TDP set only 1 watt higher at 5 watts, gets nearly 1/3 the battery life. Whoever the hardware guru is over at Valve that guy is a god tier magician.
