Testing out the VRAM (BIOS 323) in-depth in this video. It seems to limit some games near 4GB even when a higher VRAM is selected, very strange.

Great work as always! The 3.2 gb number brings 2 things in mind when I hear it. The old 970 Nvidia card that was cheaply built though it had 4 gb, only 3.5 of it was properly usable. That last .5 was garbage RAM and ran 20X slower than the rest. And the Nintendo Switch, a system with 4GB but only 3.2 GB was usable for games while the rest was OS only. Maybe they programmed these games with those points in mind and maybe not, it's just what comes to my mind is all.
@filt3rless
@filt3rless Год назад
Thanks for the info! What you said makes sense to me, and I used to have a GTX 970 SSC (which I loved), but I didn't test anything back then. What's so strange is at 5GB it immediately uses the 4GB it needs. And the ones that start at 3.2GB (most of them) will slowly climb up to the 4GB. But when given more, they'll immediately use more. It's very strange, I suspect it could even be the way Asus is managing the VRAM. If you have any ideas for how we might be able to test it further and see what's going on, let me know. I'd definitely be down to run some more in-depth tests on that issue alone just to see :)

Great video, like always from you. The auto setting is very interesting and seems like they could tweak that to better match the max performance that can be had when setting actual vram amounts. On the other hand, it seemed to do well with only using the tiny amount of vram. Just seems odd that auto uses such a tiny amount in all these games. I wonder if the AMD gpu drivers that should eventually be coming will change some of this because your video does show some weirdness in vram allocation. I don't know if that is a driver issue or if it's simply how this SoC works. The RDR2 vram usage just seems bizarre.
@filt3rless
@filt3rless Год назад
Thanks! I really hope they do tweak Auto to be more efficient. I'd love to be able to set the VRAM to Auto and forget about it all together. It did improve in BIOS 323, but just not quiet good enough. I'm looking forward to the new AMD driver as well, I'll be running some tests as soon as it comes out. It'd be great if we get even a little more performance and better VRAM allocation. The games stopping around 3.2GB and then even 4GB when it has 8 available seems strange to me. But we saw that some games will just use it up anyway, so I don't know exactly what's going on. I had someone comment that if you set VRAM to 1GB RD2 actually performs better, like you said I wouldn't be surprised with the weird results we got.

Thanks 👍 great work👏 Would be nice to have newer AAA games that are really hard to run on the comparison. Like Jedi survivor or Hogwarts Legacy or Spider-Man. Of course Witcher, cyberpunk and so on are demanding but they are already years old and had a lot of great optimization. More recent games that are horribly optimized for Pc seem to be the target for eventually turning the VRam higher.

I’ve gotten Spider-Man remastered to run very well(but that was on 8gb vram, before the update. Have to try it out with 6. But also with Spider-Man I changed my page file to 16gb instead of the 8,7 that is standard and after that it ran amazing and I got +60fps 1080p I think it was fsr quality or balanced, it dipped down to like 50 sometimes when around in the city. Besides that I’ve pretty much only played Diablo. Which runs extremely well.

I have disabled on my system. However, I haven't noticed much difference (even in games I thought it'd matter). I'm sure there are games out there, but I haven't tested them yet. On my main rig with 32GB, core isolation being disabled helps a TON in a game called Star Citizen, but it also eats all 32GB (and would use even more if available).

It's such a strange result and I'm not sure why it does it. Some of the other games also use slightly more VRAM when they have less dedicated. To me what the Ally is doing is very odd, however, it's still working really well. I've been running 5GB and just playing games and it's been awesome! I think 5GB is the sweet spot (including Diablo 4). It allows the few games that seem to not want to use 4GB to actually get up to that, and even go past up to 5GB. If you play COD though, 8GB is the way to go 👍

So if the games actually used 4GB, I think 4GB would work pretty well across the board. Since they don't though, the 5GB option gives them the headroom. Great benchmarks, though I never pay attention to .1% lows in any benchmark. All it takes is one momentary stutter, be they traversal/loading, shader comp, or some other things going on with windows in the background and never represent real-world gameplay experience.
@filt3rless
@filt3rless Год назад
Thanks, and I agree. The 0.1% lows are a very loose number. Since I show the gameplay I leave it in there so when there is a big stutter we know how low it got. But I definitely don't think it's near as important as the AVG/1%.

honestly i never understand why the auto is always at 400mb.
@filt3rless
@filt3rless Год назад
It's basically where it'll share the ram between the CPU and GPU automatically. So it's getting more then the 400MB, that'd just the small dedicated about. However, I don't know how Asus is deciding what gets what amount of RAM. I'd assume they're giving priority to the system and then letting the GPU use what's left over, but I'm unclear on that. If I was building a system I think it'd be really hard to get Auto working, because of lot of games would try to request too much, and there isn't a set "give this game this amount". They'd almost have to fine tune auto for every game. I'm sure someone else knows a lot more about this though, but those are my thoughts, hope it helps :)

@scottjungle5840 Год назад
One thing to keep in mind… the more VRAM you use the less system RAM you have, so this will affect your fps. This is where your “strange” results are coming from I think, so the CPU based games will want more RAM over VRAM. Also, VRAM doesn’t translate to fps, more VRAM means more textures etc. in a higher resolution. Suggest you connect up a 1440p monitor and see what you get then since the screen on the Ally is limited. Interesting that Auto VRAM meter is broken.

There is something that noone seems to understand with vram on APU's. so let me try and explain. So, i APU has no dedicated vram. it uses the system ram as vram. now lets say you have 3GB of vram allocated to the GPU of the APU, bios locks that ram away from the OS and sets it aside to the GPU. but lets say you open a game that uses more than 3GB of vram, what happens? Well Windows (or any OS) starts to use system ram to make up for the extra vram required. now, normally that would be bad with a dedicated GPU as system ram tends to be slower than the vram on the GPU but this is a APU, which uses system ram to begin with. so, when you run out of the allocated vram, the OS just uses system ram but because the "vram" and system ram are the same, when it does use system ram you should see no difference in performance. So, is there a point of increasing the vram amount on APUs like what's in the ally or steam deck? Not really, setting it to 2-3GB should be enough, you really dont get any benefit from increasing it more apart from having less for the OS to use which could actually harm performance more once the OS runs out of ram (which lets be honest, its windows, you will run out of ram)

@MCK888
@MCK888 Год назад
Yes
@filt3rless
@filt3rless Год назад
I didn't notice this in my testing. One way it could raise temps though, is if the VRAM is causing the FPS to drop in the game, it allows the CPU more freedom to pull watts. And the CPU runs MUCH hotter than the GPU. This is something I've found about CPU Boost and how it'll suck up free watts causing higher temperatures. So I don't think it's related to the VRAM itself, but the FPS of the game and the GPU not being able to be utilized as much, then the CPU sucking up the power and running hotter.
