I think I've read just about every Roger Ebert review he ever did for the Sun times, and whenever I'm watching a movie made before 2012 I almost always Google his review. He's right, it's entertaining.
Hell, there was a period of my life where my significant other would joke “You are more into reading about movies than actually watching them,” because I spent so much time reading his reviews.
"A man goes to the movies. The critic must be honest enough to admit that he is that man." - Robert Warshow Ebert often said this quote is the foundation of his approach to criticism.
When a movie gets a negative review, and somebody likes it, and then they tell everyone, "Don't listen to the critics," that is a person who doesn't understand what makes a quality review. A quality review is about the quality of the film. The quality of a film is not necessarily indicative of how much you will enjoy it, simply how well it was made. Everyone should work on, at the very least, being able to express why they do or do not enjoy something. You don't need extensive film knowledge; just start with your own thoughts for this one film. Instead of saying, "Don't listen to the critics," become a critic yourself, and explain to everyone why the other critics are wrong about this particular film. You will sound much less whiny, and you will have contributed substantially to the dialogue.
“This is why I don’t listen to critics” or even “this critic” has to be one of the most annoying comment types. What they’re really saying is this: “In this instance, this critic’s taste didn’t perfectly match my own, and that makes me angry.” What a childish way to look at the world.
@@ambskater97 Since 2018 Rotten Tomatoes has been posting reviews from blogger and youtubers. That isn't necessarily problematic but many of them don't even make critiques. Either they don't know how or are just too lazy to bother.
interesting. However I disagree that if they bad mouth a movie... What makes you think youd like the movie? like say the Texas Chainsaw remake. he said "this movie was depressing to watch" and he was right.. why would you want to see a movie that depresses you. I saw it and the constant "heroine got played over" was depressing to watch...
