Nothing to be sad about at the end of the day, even as a Fedfan. At 38 years old, to reach the AO semi finals after 2 4-hour long matches, to get beaten by Djokovic is totally all right.
This is so true! People are starting to call for his retirement as if he's getting humiliated and exiting tournaments in round 1! He's 38 and still reaching grand slam finals and semi-finals against men over 10 years younger than him. He's incredible! Absolutely amazing ❤
Not to mention he played no matches prior to the AO and was suffering from an injury. All things considered, he did alright. Even in his prime 10+ years ago, he still happened to lose to Djokovic in the semis.
I'll tell you why it isn't sad. Because there was nothing to expect. Who can expect a 38 year old man on a hobbled groin and back problems to beat a guy who is in good form and has only lost one set all tournament long? Not to mention the fact that he's the last guy that you would trust to convert a break point, let alone a 5-3 lead.
@@GMPranav Why are you so salty Rodzer fans.I just said that what he said isnt true and you canot argue that and you start coming at me with some stats that dont have anything to do with Roger.
So sad watching this press conference and seeing him not knowing that his career was over in that moment. Man was talking about how he hoped to recover quickly and be ready for Dubai which was just a few weeks later. In reality he ended up having surgery and not playing at all the rest of the year, and then attempted to come back in 2021 and after just 5 tournaments had surgery again and then in 2022 anounced his retirement. This SF match against Djokovic was the end.
Well he got like a $1 million check for losing that match. I think he was thinking "Well worst case scenario I get to deposit $1 million in my bank account. Not too bad."
It's TRUE that he got the money. Do you really think that he really played for the money. Do you know how many millions he earned and how much more he will. He makes more through endorsements. Federer himself said that he could have avoided the game but that is not the way it should be . Everyone knows Fed is not perfectly fit for the game.
Happy that Djoker won but massive respect for Roger for turning up in such condition and fighting till the end. A champion in every sense of the word...
@@user-mf5ue6rc5n Stop assuming, he has at least 2 years left- to get 8th AO, I know for sure Nadal is not going to win anymore, Thiem has sealed his fate, with the win, this was Nadal's last chance to be in the finals with Djokovic, and perhaps pull of the biggest upset of all time, and equal Fed's 20 slams, Fed losing this, is way less tragic, than Nadal winning this, and breaking Fed's heart, Fed at least can rest, until French Open and Wimbledon.
D D Exactly, Nole is my favourite obviously, BUT before Nole came it was Roger, and in Nole’s own words “Roger and Rafa made me a player I am today”. These 3 really are equally big, period. All three gave us tennis matches to remember and all three lifted tennis to a whole new level. Again, I personally think Nole is the biggest success in the last decade BUT he only went up a level BECAUSE of Roger and Rafa, end of.
Welcome to South Africa Roger I am so thrilled that I managed to buy a ticket to see you play in the skin on the 7th February. I hope that your groin gets better soon. Also to see Rafa will be so special. Cape Town welcomes you both and hope that you can visit a fewcwind farms
he really is a massive threat in 3 setters. problem is the young guys do very well in 3 setters as well and thats how he was denied the ATP Finals win.
@Oliver McCall Federer is 6-1 against Nadal since 2015, and Nadal's only win is on clay (and on a windy day). Dunno about 45, but to me a 40 yo Roger is the favourite to win against any version of Nadal in Basel & Halle.
I feel the same way. Novak's fan here, but I wish Roger health and a lot of success. Putting my preferences aside, I want to see good tennis. Watching Roger is a privilege and is actually good for Novak. He pushes Novak so much to improve himself, that´s great.
@@tush382 yeah started watching from past 8 years and since then he barely won. I think he won 3 in past 8 years. That is 3 in 32 slams. He is use to it
I feel you brother. Happiness is what is Tennis gives us spectators 💚 mental, physical toughness is all incredibly admirable but the joy of the game- He brings out like no other. A bit like Brazil with football 💛
It's really sad, he sounds like he doesn't trust his body anymore for the long tournaments(Slams). It's reasonable i guess because of his consecutive injuries in USO and now here, but i guess if he manages to win his early matches easily at WO, he will be the champion. Today he managed to give Djokovic a better competition than Nadal did last year, and he was playing just with his upper body. His movement was completely out of shape cause of the injury. But his backhand and forehand were amazing and he produced magic with them. I don't care if he wins or loses anymore. I just want to see him playing great tennis.
@@DrFearfall Well, me too but we shouldn't expect him winning today, we knew he was badly injured before the match. But if he is healthy, he will bounce back and beat Djokovic in Dubai(if the latter plays) or in Sunshine double. His shots and overall performance are MUCH better than last year. Against Tsitsipas he played terrible for most of the match. This year his off-season preparation was very good, he has lost weight and gained muscles and he is very precise at his shots. Also, his strategy in the last 3 matches against Djokovic has been great so don't worry. He will get some good wins against him this year for sure. After all he is the only player on tour who can serve so well against him and that's a big advantage. Today we saw some great returns from Roger as well.
@DrFearfall I agree. There's been many games he's played him and folded for some reason when he's been in control. Although Djokovic shows great mental strength and resilience, Federer has let him off a fair few times. Djokovic has had that mental edge over him getting over the line. Today you can make an exception with his injury, but, like Wimbledon last year he should of won it. for all his wonderful talent, he really has been his own worst enemy on lots of occasions. I definitely feel he will win at least one more slam before he retires though, he's obviously still got the game, just needs to stay 100% fit.
@@steventhompson2511 I agree, generally he has shown mental weakness against Djokovic. Today, he should have won the first set ,but he was also a little bit unlucky and not mentally weak as usual ( one Djokovic's serve that barely touched the line, one Federer's volley went out by 1 cm and one backhand down the line as well). But generally i feel that he considers himself too old to beat Djokovic in Slams and that drops his confidence.
din fak, it really is fine margins as you say. So frustrating how he lets him back in games a lot though, but, even with other opponent's too at times. It's silly if what you say ia true that he thinks he's past it to beat Djokovic as that's BS. He only beat him at the end of last year in November so proved he can still do it. Even without that win, hua performances this tournament have been staggering as you know, especially when the last few games he's limped through. He just needs to continue what he does abd get himself right and you know he'll be back. Hopefully he can win a couple tournaments before Wimbledon.
@@ayushraj3813 you cannot say tell someone who is the GOAT, people follow player that they love and get inspiration from, in this case he believes that Federer is that inspiration which makes him feel that he is the GOAT for himself not for anyone else and you cant take that away from someone, no matter how many titles they have won
What is fascinating here is his love for tennis. He likes to keep playing as long as he is fit and he is hopeful of winning irrespective of rate of success and failure. Though man.
Federer is playing just for a few reasons -, playing for his children, his fans, his love for the game, his chance to add a few majors though not very likely and for Uniqlo. He knows very well that if he wins, it’s s bonus.
hahahah come on man we all know he plays because of his fear of losing the tron of grand slams .... I bet if tomorrow Nadal and Djokovic announced their retirement there will be not a minute past till we hear how roger has also announced his retirement
Such a great player and a humble person!I love him!Tennis will really be nothing without you! Please don't retire your fans will be with you no matter what! You are the best!!!!!!!
Im just happy he is still alive. After the passing of Kobe i do not care about records anymore. Im just happy to still see him playing and enjoying himself. Even if Rafa or Novak pass him in GS he will still be the GOAT in my book and I know alot of people will feel the same way. Overall he has done so much more for tennis than any other player ever has or could do so for that I think he will always be the best ever regardless of records. Greatest does not just mean records but the impact and legacy he has.
Couldnt have agreed more on this.I mean after the passing was of Bryants and other wonderful people...everything else just seems shallow and fickle.Reminds me of how superficial our living is...and in this context records/wins/losses/injury etc are really blown over the top stats. Live each day, live meaningfully,be grateful...thats all i want to tell other fellow human beings.
@@zenscape663 no one did. Don't try to bring the goalpost closer than it should be, Novak and Rafa struggling to win slams against a grandpa who can barely run anymore and against next gens in their diapers who can't get a second serve in to save their lives isn't GOAT worthy. The 2000s was WAY stronger than the current era, even roddick would probably wipe the floor with Most of the tour on excluding the top 4
Federer still has it !! I believe he can win another 2 grand slams. He is playing because he loves the game. And 38 is young in my opinion. Don’t listen to anyone roger. There’s no reason to retire yet..Your still playing incredibly tennis !!!
Feelslikezoom i don't think he will win 2 more grand slams, but Wimbledon is obviously his biggest chance and he could perhaps win one more there, but yet again, the chances are small and they are getting smaller by each year he gets older. At least I can say that you can never underestimate Federer even when being a 38 year old man.
Maybe but Oliver, Djokovic wasn't better today, he was lucky if I may say. All I mean is AO is djokovic favourite and Roger was at least as good as Novak was today
@Feelslikezoom He can definitely win more. He literally made it to a grand slam semifinal with a tore up groin, back and on one leg!!!!!!! Couldn't move at all and still made it to the final four! Needs to do everything to get HEALTHY. Take time off. Limited schedule. Get FRESH. He just beat Djokovic like two months ago. Would've done the same thing had he been anywhere near healthy today. Made him SWEAT especially early on even with a failing body!
@39 still in the semis of a GS Still doing amazing shots Still a 3rd seed....why are people insisting for this guy's retirement when in a bold day light you are still able to see ..HE IS AT THE TOP THREE still...HE IS AT THE GS SEMIS still....HE CAN STILL DOMINATE YOUNG BLOODS....HE CAN STILL RACK UP titles..in my opinion...players that are bound for retirement are only those who can't do what's written above
I think it's about retiring when at, or close to, the top. Some people want that, some people don't. Eg Fernando Alonso compared to Rosberg in formula One.
@@pastorofmuppets8834 yeah..but roger is different... he listens to his body...while it says it still can..the maestro still brings the rackets to the court.
hosi35 how does it not make sense, she asked a dumb question that obviously the answer is yes. Who enters the tournament without thinking they can’t win it all
The question about his retirement was about retiring the match due to injury, not hanging up the boots and not playing tennis. The question was about him playing through his injury instead of retiring the match and not risk aggravating it further.
@Bunthy Kong Correct. If you still have it, age shouldn't matter. And 38 ain't THAT old anyway, and it's silly if people do suggest this to Federer based on his performances this tournament.
lachie, 36 is considered old and he won AO back to back. It depends on the individual. Take Cristiano Ronaldo for instance, he's 35 next month and has the physique of a 22 yo so I read.
Exactly!!! The guy is visibly crushed by the loss but he made it all the way to the semis. That itself is a feat! And then you go ahead and ask him that?! Slow claps. Jesus.
The fact that he is still out there competing for grand slams at 38 is incredible. He is an absolute legend! And I think he will win another before he retires.
Keep your head up Federer, you are the GOAT and we will always want you to keep playing! I hope you find your form again soon, tennis is always better with you ❤
Is having the most GS titles equals to GOAT? I love Federer cos he's a class act and his tennis strokes is like art, effortless power. Thats why he's GOAT to me, but yeah maybe he will not have the most GS titles in the future becos Nadal and Djokovic will probably surpass him :)
@@miltonng4116 I agree with that, he is the most gracious, elegant player, but Nadal and Djokovic are gladiators really, and most of his grand slams he won before Nadal-Nole era, thats why I think that goat race is between Nadal and Nole :)

He should have grabbed that last year. Was devasted after seeing how close he came. In grass roger always give tough time to novak , well it's different in hard court tournaments especially AO.
@@btfvffxwsf1672 Take it easy. Djokovic will surpass Federer one way or another, Federer deserves at least one more GS title for the effort he is putting up at this age with injuries, etc.
I cannot see him lose. Its always a heartbreaking moment for me. But for sure...there will come another 3 Grand Slams. I love him and will be Federer Fan till i die. ♥️🇨🇭
At this phase of their careers we all want to see them win. I am a Novak fan but tbh right now I just support all 3 of them. They will be IRREPLACEABLE 🙂
Always support Roger no matter the situation is up or down. Get better soon. Definitely hope to see Roger again in Australian Open and other tennis tournaments. I always believe you can do it!
Roger, only see you playing Tennis today is a privilege and an honours!!! Winning or Losing, it is pure magic!!! Please continue for more time... please FF
It was really sad seeing him drop in level, he was such in a high level starting the game in which he could have won the whole match the injury changed the outcome and that is sad
@@capitosinora 100% someone else who isn’t delusional.... he was playing fine at 4.1 and 5.3 soon as that tie break hit he knew what was gonna happen!!!! He’s unbelievable when it comes to losing to Djokovic that Wimbledon final will haunt him forever.
@@paddylewis6818 what are u talking about? You think he faked the injury and just choked at 4:1 lead in the beginning of first set? Wimbledon final is in the past already, it's not his first lost final that hurt. In their last game at ATP finals he easily beat Djoković.
@@paddylewis6818 clearly wasn't seeing his foot work was trash, his shot choices were so lazy towards the end of the first set. Esp when he had ser pt, you can see he was trying to end pts quick and end up hitting stupid net shots because any longer would of beena downhill match so he took the gamble.
I absolutely love watching you play. It's okay that you didn't win this tournament. You played great tennis and gave us all what we look for in a Federer match. Demonstration of great tennis skills and watching you display your love and appreciation for the game. One more thing, 38 is not old. I'm 58 and I ain't old.
As a Novak's fan I think we shouldnt argue who is the GOAT between Nadal Roger and Novak we should just enjoy while we still have them in the game. They are all goat in some way
As a Federer fan I agree, I get so tired of the endless GOAT debates and how nasty some fans are about it. For me they are all the GOAT. (Plus Laver with 2 CYGSs 1962 & 1969 and would have probably had 20+ majors if he had been allowed to play those 6 years in his prime before the open era. ) The big 3 all are amazing players and we are lucky to get to watch them for so long. Hope Federer recovers from this injury and then hope they can all stay healthy the rest of the season . ❤️Roger ❤️Nole ❤️Rafa
He started so strong. I was at the match I worked out it cost me $2.10 a minute to be there based on the ticket cost and the playtime... Maybe he will play next year the last time??
Morphix007 films, do you think it was worth it, given that you’re watching 2 players who are not only the greatest so far, but could possibly be the greatest of the future too?
I am a roger fan , everytime i see him getting closer to his goal , it really excites me and i really wants him to win. And if he cant than its still fine since he still does things most of the players cant even think of. So roger better luck next time. U r an inspiration.
As a Federer fan I have to appreciate the level of tennis Fed is displaying at the age of 38 and I am thankful I am able to watch him still play. But on the other hand I have to admit that todays first set against Djokovic kinda shows why he has a negative score against these players. Nothing to do with age and injury, he just choked it, like many times before and who knows how the match would have unraveled if he had won that set... He started the match with the "nothing to lose" attitude and dominated the game but as soon as he started feeling he has a chance to win... We saw what happened. Lets be honest, concerning talent only he is in a league of his own, but the mental toughness, well, he never was even close in that department compared to Nadal and Djokovic who are absolute mental beasts. Well played Djokovic, deserved win and I hope we get to watch an interesting finale.
federer started off great, but are you rlly ignoring the terrible start of djokovic? unforced errors over the top, thats why the score was the way it was in the beginning, not cuz fed outplayed him..
Not a fan of Federer, but many players would have not even taken the court if they wasn't at least 80% fit and got a big check. I got to respect him for that.
This era of Federer/Nadal and Djokovic reminds me of the Ali/Fraser and Foreman bouts of the 70's - dominant, fierce, personality, drama, drama, drama! Love it!
Always very well spoken of his opponents. He is always trying to do new things for the game of tennis like the match in Africa and it shows his commitment to the sport he loves ! Love you my hero ❤️🎾🙏🏽
Don't retire Roger!!! You're having injury related issues, but you're still the best of all time. Get back to the arena and show them your awesomeness.
Nothing to be sad! You are already proven, Maestro! The living legend! Mr Unique! The King of Tennis! Weloveyou, Maestro! God bless & see you in your next tournament.
We love you Federer. You are an inspiration for anybody. May God keep pouring out all His blessings upon you and we want to see you playing for many years to come
I don't normally listen to the talk - just watch the game - but I was very impressed by RF's analytical skills and articulacy - especially under the oppressive pressure of the immediate post-match interview. And patience with and courtesy to the questioners.
The way he played the first set, despite the groin and lower back injury, was phenomenal. Nonetheless, it was a great match and roger will come back stronger !
Roger is 2 hard on himself. He is still a very great player. So many would b thrilled to get to his level. He's a fighter & his confidence today U could c was lower than usually. Still one of the greatest. Can't wait 2c the next tournament.
For me you are a tennis legend you always in our hart. But I see last three match of yours you struggle with new generation player. Respect for you always you still play 38
Pretty obvious watching the match that he was injured. Lack of power but played as canny as he could. Defense was obviously challenging as a result but offensively he gave Joker a run for his money. BTW People who give a thumbs down should try playing tennis with an injury.
So honest and down to earth considering he is a megastar. Consdiering how he battled to the semis with no prep, its quite amazing. If he can keep his body injury free who knows what he can do.
Huge respect for both Roger and Rafa as well as for Nole. Winning or loosing they show the NextGen what it takes to be true gentlemen in and outside the court. It will be a very sad day when it comes the time for them to go on with their lives wearing long pants. The amount of wonderful memories will be overwhelming. Get well soon and keep on playing Great Rog.
