I'd consider 2012 still his prime. He got back to number 1 when the big 4 were at their very best.

I think Murray's best was a little later and you could argue that Djokovic's 2015 was his best season in terms of raw numbers.

@@zlatkostevanovic5891 How can you call Novak the GOAT when Federer played better tennis than him? Seriously if you go one quality at a time, Federer gets the checkmark about 80% of the time. I'll give Novak speed, backhand, and flexibility... otherwise what else is he better at than Federer?
@henry6981
@henry6981 6 месяцев назад
@@waholoopesorry74longevity, consistency, mindset. he has more slams because he's been active for a longer period of time, in longstanding rallies between them federer is statistically more likely to make an unforced error, and you can see federer choke in various important moments throughout his career. i can say that i believe prime federer was better than prime djokovic, but djokovic's career is more successful and fruitful in legacy.

The majority of points here are from 2011-2012 season which many people still consider as his prime years (myself too). His peak was obviously during 2004-2007 stretch, but his prime is probably 2003-2012. That is one of the reasons why up until 2012 his matches against Novak were still very competetive, very tight. Federer was still able to keep up physically with Novak. After 2012 he massively declined and he was not able to defend well. It is not coincidence that we have maybe 2-3 clips after 2012 season in this video. His 2013 season was bad because of his back problems. He was able to rejuvenate his career by changing his racket in 2014 and putting even more aggressive playstyle than in the past years. But as i said he was the shadow of himself in terms of defending.
@masters.1000
@masters.1000 Год назад
Come on, how can you call 2011 his prime, ¿are you insane? He was 30+ years old, no one is in his prime at that age. He couldn't stop shanking the ball and losing every second set out there. You can't call a prime when he declined tremendously since 2008. He lost to guys like Stepanek, Fish, Simon, Montañes and Benneteau.
@TheGodsMustBeCrazy
@TheGodsMustBeCrazy Год назад
I disagree. His last match of his prime was vs Murray in the final of the Australian Open. He had his great moments in 2011 like beating Novak at the French, and spanking him for most of that US Open semi. He did win Wimbledon in 2012, but he was already 31. No one is in their prime at 31. I'd argue, his prime was 2004-2010. 2008 he had mono and 2009-2010 was the last year of his prime.
@benhicks9481
@benhicks9481 Год назад
they played 21 times after 2012, 8 of them went the distance for full sets played. Federer winning 7 matches when he's 6 years older and constantly playing against a more youthful GOAT recognised player is actually pretty good I'd say. For example take the Connors-Lendl rivalry, a difference of about 7 years, but Connors didn't win any of the last 17 matches between them and only took 4 matches the distance, Federer make Djokovic work to overtake him.
@rorschach3005

2011-12 is not federers prime simply because the courts were very slow by then as it is today and fed wouldnt switch to a larger racquet till 2017
@SHVideografie

@@masters.1000in 2011 Federer for the majority was 29. But tbs, Federer has always been a very explosive and offensive minded player. Once the body loses fast twitch muscle fibers you start to lose power, speed, athleticism, reflexes. Something Federer's game was depending on a lot. It's no wonder that his prime ended somewhere in his late 20s due to physical reasons. That in combination with more and more injuries.

A prime is a continuous period of time where both physical and technical abilities were at their best, and improving. Besides it, you can have several peaks of form, including within the prime period. Federer had a clear established prime since Masters Cup 2003 until the Masters Cup 2007, and he also peaked a lot of times like in Australia 2010, RG 2011, Wimbledon 2015, early 2017 etc.

The days where players didn’t have on court coaching which has really ruined the game , the player has to figure it out himself which some of the current current seem to find very difficult for some reason. Just waiting for a new rule which allows the player to leave the court while the coach plays a set for them? The game was perfect to start with and yet some Muppets seem to think it should be messed with.

Federer's pursuit of total greatness was really not only halted by Nadal or Djokovic but also significantly by Del Potro. US Open 2009, Tour Finals 2009, French Open 2012, Basel 2012&13, US Open 2017.

Roger blew away all of those by consistently targetting DP's forehand like trying to prove a point or something. In the US Open 2017 he had a bad back, so I wouldn't count that one.

What? The only one really significant here is 2009 USO. French -12 RF won, Basel wouldn’t say that halted his career too much and 2017 USO he would have lost to any decent player.
