Baghdatis was playing extremely well in this tournament. He beat Roddick, Ljubicic and Nalbandian before losing the final here. He showed a lot of talent and great shot-making display, and I remember the commentators predicting at the time that he will go on to win many big tournaments with all that potential. Sadly, he didn't. But he did beat both Roger and Rafa once in 2010. Never beat Djokovic, but defeated Murray 3 times during his career.

I have the impression that fitness was an issue for Baghdatis.

I remember that he was a black horse of the tournament ;) Sadly I had some missing years in my tenis watching career and never saw B beating R&R :( I just have checked and Djokovic lost to Goldstein in round 1, Goldstein lost to Hass 012 666 :) On the wiki of Novak there is no mention of this ) Those were the days. I still remember the old crt tv on which I was watching the game on :)

@@evakovacs5340 Indeed it was. Plus after that 2006 Australian Open I'd guess that he lost a lot of motivation. Sadly his career had a lot of potential but he didn't continue to utilize it.

@@tehdii You mean dark horse, not black horse. Baghdatis wasn't even a dark horse during the 2006 Australian open tournament. He entered the tournament as an unseeded player. Dark horse is someone who has unexpected skills and features up his sleeves and can display some serious prominence but is little expected or underestimated compared to the top contenders. Guys like Dimitrov, DeMinaur, Norrie, Khachanov in men's tennis nowadays could be considered as dark horses for example.

They dont follow sport and cant figure out why people still hail Federer as G.O.A.T. while djokovic broke records and counting numbers, and when they see any video such as this one from Federer prime, they get a reality slap right across the face 😂

So very true. The large majority of Novak fan boys are millennials and gen z. These are the same people that think Lebron James is basketball’s GOAT. Federer is the Jordan of men’s tennis.
@Jonathan-mp3ju
@Jonathan-mp3ju 6 месяцев назад
@@zvonkosolin8627Very simple. Stats alone has never determine the goat of a sport. GOAT icons like Tiger, Serena, Ali, Jordan and Federer transcend their sport on a global level, something that Novak is not even close to doing no ever will. Federer is on a completely different level with what he does on and off the court and how he does it. Only Nadal is even in the discussion. Novak follows them both. You may not like it but it’s a fact. In fact, Federer is considered one of the greatest athletes of all time. Novak isn’t even on the list. Google it.

@Nickreds20 6 месяцев назад
Oh yeah, for sure! Noletards are everywhere, like stupid mosquitos looking for every Federer and Nadal match or interview or reel or post or whatever just to try to create a discussion praising djokovic, bringing stupid arguments and stats 😂. Truth is Roger played since the year 1998, going through 3 generations of opponents, beating the best of the best, Sampras, Agassi for starters, and countless others. Djokovic would appear way after that in 2003. So you can’t really compare them, Fed will always be the Real GOAT, whether noletards like it or not 😎.

He was bad all tournament but played well enough to get through. He had problems with his ankle and foot, still lingering from his freak ankle-twist accident in training at the back end of 2005 (and almost won Shanghai year-end Masters on one leg) a couple of months prior to AO, but somehow found a way to win it this time. He was much fitter at the start of 2007, coming off a fresh back end of 2006.

Typical sort of match - good challenger comes out guns blazing, and Federer starts not at all on song. Challenger can't keep it up and tires, and Federer just concentrates and his game improves enough to win it. Looks like the heat was awful.

All that genuine emotion and humanity exemplifies why Roger is the most beloved and influential player in tennis history. And, to the polar opposite extreme, it’s why Novak continues to pile up trophies while capturing only the hearts of authoritarian anti vaxxers Hey, we had a hell of a run in men’s tennis But…it’s a run that exists in the past tense
@Psyaii

Refuses to get a vaccine mandated by authoritarian governments, yet he wins the heart of authoritarians?? He's not anti-vaccination, he was against taking that particular vaccine himself. Tennis still has plenty of emotion whether through Djokovic or other players. Don't be so blinded by your Federer bias that you can't enjoy the rise of new champions. True it's a bit hard with Djokovic winning everything right now, but that will pass eventually.
