@DS AO 2017: Berdych, Nishikori, Mischa (who has beaten Murray), Wawrinka (who was the US Open Champion) and Nadal. Wow what a special draw. AO 2018: Struff (not a bad player at all), Gasquet (a known name), Fucsovics (played phenominal in this Tournament), Berdych (in absolutely strong Form), Chung (who faced Djokovic), Cilic (1 GS + Wimbledon Final). Hmmmm. Looks not so easy to me. Nadals victory in the 2017 US Open was easy.

This was neither a classic nor a bad match... it was a very weird match. There were hardly any stretches in the match where both the players played well, Roger started pretty good and was cruising for set and half, then his level dropped and Cilic started playing well and won the TB. Federer then played pretty good at the start of 4th set, got the break and I thought he would wrap it easily in 4 sets...but then Cilic peaked all of a sudden, Roger looked rattled, gets broken twice and loses the set. At this point, Cilic had all the momentum, I thought Roger might lose this. That first game of 5th set was so crucial, if he would have gotten broken there, I doubt he would have won it. He badly needed that game after getting broken in last 2 service games. Federer played very passive in this game and this was probably his most passive performance in a non-clay GS final. One thing which surprised me was that he hardly went BH DTL in this match, he hardly had any winners from baseline in this match. If Cilic's ROS wasn't so inconsistent, he could have won this. On the whole, a very strange match and a very strange performance from Roger but got the job done in the end. Now, waiting for #21 at SW19
@janglepoop123

Most likely cuz fed was super nervous in this match as he said so himself in his interviews post match. As the overwhelming favorite to win, there was obviously a lot more pressure in this final than in the 2017 one.

He is a champion of champions and its his humility that stands out for me. A phenomenal athlete but its amazing that someone as good as Roger at times suffer from nerves, more so of late. I hope he wins another Wimbledon but even if doesn't he will anyways be the most admired champion.

If you look back on 2017 his AO final against Nadal isn't exactly a very high quality one either. The first four sets are marked by momentum shifts, one player would capitalize on the other's error strewn play before receiving the same treatment a few games after. The 5th set though was remarkable, and the legacy surrounding the match made it all the more better.

I know right ? I just realized it now but, you know, for every match or final you have different special shots of each opponent. When both players have intense rallies showing off their best tennis. And there are always atleast some points or rallies which you remember. For example at the Australian Open 2017 there is this intense rally or the special nadal forehand slice passing shot or some other federer backhand winners. And for this match the only thing i really can remember after rewatching it is this amazing forehand halfvolley behind his back by federer. I don't know if we are just spoiled about the amazing shots the big 4 have given us each match when playing or to say against each other. But for me this final isnt really one that will be remembered because of the high level of play.

For me it's simple. No interest in goat debates... im a tennis fan since mid seventies. Federer is the "prettiest" (among top players in history - shapo still too young, kyrgios doesnt win enough, etc) to watch, since Edberg, w an honorable mention to Pete of course. Roger has played his entire career, every point with a view to win the point as fast as logically possible. Safin didnt have the same variety or consistancy. But that's the type of mental focus. Attack. Rafa and Novak will end up on par success wise, no doubt. But Roger simply to my eyes of viewing tennis on hard or grass, has every shot in the book, and the most visually pleasing of the big 3.

Federer is the greatest tennis player but possibly the greatest athlete of all time. 36 year old winning best of five matches on hard courts against players in their prime. Unbelievable. Where was Rafa abs Novak? So much for that silly “weak era” argument. Federer at his best beats everyone. End of story. This match wasn’t his best but it revealed how is grit and will to win. I remember thinking that colic was going to take it after the fourth but Federer will kicked it into another gear that fifth set which 36 year olds shouldn’t be able to do. Too bad the AO didn’t stay grass courts so that Federer could have more slams. That’s what surprises me about Federer wining back to back Australian opens because it’s a best of five on a slower hard court. Didn’t think his body could handle it. The courts have been playing faster the last couple years but still considered one of the slower hard courts which is a shame. Here’s hoping Federer can win one slam in 2019. If not, it doesn’t really matter because it’s a real privilege to watch this incredible shot maker even without the silverware. I have a lot of respect for natal and Djokovic but I don’t know how anyone can hate Federer. Rafa and Novak are great athletes but they play such a boring, physical and defensive style of tennis. I think the reason why Federer is the most popular worldwide is because if his brilliant shit making and offensive style (movement). Win or lose, Federer plays on his terms which can’t be said about other players.
@3438-e9z
@3438-e9z 5 лет назад
DS No offence, but your comment made no sense. How did your brain twist a fact into “I want my favourite player to win all the time.” I was stating a fact that the AO hard courts have played very slow from 2008- 2016 and that favours baseline grinders like Novak and Rafa. Just like how a faster court like Wimbledon helps an offensive player like Federer. They’re just facts that everybody who understands tennis is already aware. Actually you helped prove my point that if the AO still had grass courts it’s not unreasonable to think Federer would have another 4 slams to his name. I didn’t under data due your point about “tiley”? Are u saying you can’t explain how Federer won back to back Australian opens?
@3438-e9z
@3438-e9z 5 лет назад
DS You’re a fucking hypocrite. So I’m not allowed to talk about court surfaces but you’re allowed to butch and complain that Federer played his matches at night? You’re pathetic. Look how fast the court is playing. Looks like an old school hard court. No wonder Federer won the AO in 2017 and 2018 when they suddenly sped the court up. If they hadn't slowed all the courts down so much, he would have won more, which is why the GOAT debate is silly. It's all conditional.

True... Nadal is the most beneficial !! Federer & Djokovic wud have won more slams had the courts werent slowed

When I was watching this game, I used to consider it a revenge response to the 2014 US Open semi-finals. I was on my nerves with every point and did not disappoint me Roger Federer, Roger Federer tennis like Messi in football is always out of the ordinary and has no one else who looks like him

"Federer will remain the GOAT forever even if another player achieves the greatest records because my idol is the most loved or beautiful to watch" A brilliant example of partiality 😴😪 Federer's fanboys really need to stop acting so badly. *The GOAT debate should not involve the affect and personal preference of each one but be based on the figures, statistics, on the palmares.* *This is the best way to be objective* on the subject. Whether you like/dislike the game and/or the personality of a player, whatever he is, it's not crucial and should not be taken into account. Impartiality otherwise the opinion has little credibility. To date it is Federer but it can very well change if Nadal or Djokovic exceeds his records Please don't be a sore loser just because the situation could not suit anymore your guru 🙄

that second serve at the end there was actually so close haha. Federer just didn't want to actually have to play out a point to close haha, so he went big on the second serve.

people saying cilic has a small heart. partially true.... but his game style involves with whacking the ball hard and taking it early to win a match. when it's on it's hard to deal with as you could see the ball was traveling 80-90mph landing on the lines. but on the other side that mean small fluctuation is going to damage his game a lot.
