"On the 7th of October 1000's of people around the world are going to put themselves in harms way because harm is coming down the road anyway.", Roger Hallam
In this video Roger, in anticipation of what was likely to occur, shares with us his heart felt and deeply held convictions on why he is prepared to go to prison. Or in Roger's own words, "I'm not making this video to make out like I'm some sort of hero. I'm just saying I'm in prison. And the fact of the matter is, other things being equal, it's not going to be a big deal. And it's not a big deal compared with the massive sacrifice that 1000's of people are making, paritcularly in the poorer countries of the world, the Global South, who are getting tortured and killed to do the sort of work we need to do."

I was just thinking how much Roger reminds me of my late father when he mentioned he was a farmer. My father was also a farmer and before that taught at an agricultural college, dedicated his life to animal conservation. So much love 💚

Thank you roger for waking me up, you and Greta, I've donated large sum,for my budget, to help support. So you can pay people. I was environmentally conscience doing what I can do myself, but I can't believe how we've been misled and outright lied too about the severe reality and the deep fucking adaptation that is now required. The timelines are so short now. One of the best quotes on protesters sign I've seen was" you're going to die of old age and I'm going to die of climate change. " Economic disruption is the only way people in power only act when profits and economies are affected unfortunately this is the only way now, 30 years of doing all the right lawful processes and things has failed. Power greed didn't bend an inch. They fucking made it all worse.

If you could please show us the prison, perhaps it would help to allay some of our anxieties? I, for instance, would be afraid, even as a 74 year-old man, of being raped.
@robsengahay5614

You have to admire the passion but does this action win the hearts and minds of the waverers? Nothing will impact the outright deniers. I recall this sort of disruption by CND in the 1980s. Did it lead to de-nuclearisation. No. Did it persuade waverers that unilateral nuclear disarmament was the right way to go. No. What we are seeing here is the two sides on this issue raising the stakes and the downside is that the vast majority start then to equivocate or disengage. I would like to know the steps that environmental activists are seeking. Governments need to employ a steady flow of legislation and initiatives in a step-by-step way to carry the majority along with them. A planned and phased approach (a blueprint if you like) is the answer and someone needs to write this down and publish it so that progress or the lack of it is more apparent.

XR do have some things, such as citizen's assemblies. i was pleased to see the lib dems state they would implement citizen assemblies ~What you are asking is that XR become like a political party, have a manifesto and all the answers. it's up to ALL of us to create the solutions .. if YOU were in charge, what would you do? you have a unique set of empirical experiences and priorities that have a solution, trust me :D myself, id implement community food forests to feed those who already experiencing food insecurity and would have starved to death by now if it hadnt been for foodbank charities n churches in rural areas. I was lucky enough to only need 2 weeks of food from my local church due to benefit delay. The food is the longest lasting, most tummy filling, nothing fresh, so the vits n minerals are low and will impact neurological development in children. (most 'customers' have dependant children far as i can tell) Some comment under this vid suggested 'green investment-only banks' when you have your idea, take it to your local eco-group, and if they're not already working closely with local council, take it to them directly, or anyone who'll listen,t ry and implement it, collect allies in your community -what can be done on a community level? maybe you could contribute to building local green energy generation those archimedes screw style water generation things look good, but i havent had time to research in depth. The political machine starts at the town n village level -that is a place where we DO have direct influence and must get involved

kim warburton If I was in charge I would have a huge shopping list of policies, some seemingly mundane, others more impactful. Off the top of my head these would include:- Phasing out single-use plastic within 3-4 years Tax high energy light bulbs and subsidise low energy ones Carry out energy audits on all businesses, reward cutting emissions and penalise those that don’t take measures. This could be a list in itself of measures that businesses must consider. Ban the sale of outdoor heaters. Reduce the costs of public transport and encourage the switch from diesel buses. Invest in technological developments in clean energy generation and storage solutions. Tighten building regulations around building in energy efficiency with new homes. Introduce road charging for single-occupant petrol cars.

Would you consider that your _'privilege'_ to have animals enslaved, mutilated, tortured and murdered just because it is currently lawful might just be showing - a tad? The shill you were questioning is selling the idea to fools that Roger has been permitted a nice clean room to do his interview whilst probably being fully aware that this interview was filmed just in case of any arrest. @@kimwarburton8490 I actually worked 7 days a week in prison, removing asbestos for $1/hr during the week, then volunteered on weekends, cutting fire wood for the poor and the elderly. At night, college, philosophy classes, music, church. I was living my life to the fullest, reading 4 books a week, now I haven't read a book since I got out,3 years. I live in the Catskillmountains, very rural, I miss my state job, now I have to kill myself to make big money (construction), and the money just evaporates, no matter how much I make. In prison, there's no shortage of friends, now I spend a lot of time alone, I've changed, but my friends have not, I can't play those old games ( drugs/alcohol) , I'm 51 and my body is falling apart from a life of labor. It's like living in solitary confinement, work, home, repeat, church on Sunday, my only day of peace. I hope you're recovering well, and don't feel guilty about getting a little help, it's only fair, you've probably worked your whole life, like me. I don't know about you, but I'm tired, I had 3 jobs when I was 12, that's almost 40 years of nonstop jumping through hoops. 5:07 "You could lose your job, but if you lose your job, like, you lose your job, you get another one. It's not the end of the world" That's a pretty bold and privileged statement to make about someone else's life. Now, I'm with you that the current state of wage slavery is pretty darn fucked, but some people, a lot of people, can't just "get another one" and actually depend on their current job to survive. Although I guess this video and XR in general is mostly supposed to appeal to the middle class, so fair enough.

Problem with the idea they are given of "getting arrested should be worn as a badge of honor" is while it may be fine for older protestors who have a pension, but for young protestors it stricken was job chances they will be able to get. As most employers (doing background checks as per standard) will see you have a criminal record (regardless if you went to prison or not) and will tell you to leave as they wont be employing you, as you have been shown to be naturally untrustworthy. Doesn't matter if you were fighting for a cause, you broke the law and wont be employed by them.

This is my area of study and I am in full support on tackling climate change. But I do not consider myself a supporter of Extinction rebellion. Points I agree on is that convensional protesting will not work. Quite right, disruption at the scale in which the economy can be distinctively altered is where the power of this activism will be found. I admire you for being convicted enough to your beliefs that you are willing to be isolated in Prison from the environment you are trying to save. Points I disagree on is how and where the disruption takes place. Being in the streets un-announced to the wider public is to put everybody at risk directly should they need emergency services present or to get to someone in their family in need of emergency attention. This happened to me where a passenger on my service did not get to see her dying dad because we were held at a stop due to protest. These are human values which should not be stepped on or treated as necessary collateral damage. Responsibility needs to be taken. Disruption to all the major ports/harbours which ship goods, Amazon Distribution centres,schools by having kids taken out for a prolonged period of time, Car manufacturers that specifically ship diesel and fuel product and so on so forth. The stoppage of the actual income is far more impactful to the government. These also have a more limiting number of incidents that may need emergency services attending. The stoppage of many cargo ships only disrupts the few crew members on board but halts MILLIIONS of money at once, for example. Also I disagree on your values. To the single carer of a disable/paralysed/mentally unstable loved one, walking off to battle climate change will have the WORST immediate affect on the other person. Potentially resulting in death, life long mental or physical damage and none of that is what being a virtuous human being is about. This is not an asteroid heading to earth which will kill of everyone at once. Its a process of rapid change to the ecology of our planet. Telling people that “oh well, it’s not the end of the world if you lose a loved one or family by separation” is absolutely wrong. My family IS my world and life without them becomes meaningless. We only get one shot of life and to a selfish extent I would take them over ecosystems around the world in a heart beat, no matter how sad or heartbreaking.
@MsJilliard
@MsJilliard 5 лет назад
I agree that protests could have a larger impact if they are planned to disrupt ''major ports/harbours which ship goods, Amazon Distribution centres,schools by having kids taken out for a prolonged period of time, Car manufacturers that specifically ship diesel and fuel products...the stoppage of many cargo ships''. But there is also a need for disruption in cities etc. as that's the only way it would make the news. Unless it is out there for the world to see, bothering people and annoying their day, the newspapers and the news broadcasts won't show it and very few people would talk about it. These smaller particular protests happen all the time and they don't make the news and usually don't make a difference. In saying that, I also completely agree with you about the inhumane effects that happen in the case of emergency services being disrupted. Emergency services should always be allowed through any type of protest and in the case of somebody being on public transport to tend to a loved one in need- there should be allowances made for them too. And if you asked any person involved in the organising end of Extinction Rebellion (at least in Ireland as that's the country I can be 100% sure of) they would completely agree. It is something that should and easily could be incorporated into the protesters plans and responsibilities. Protests are planned in advance and are organised by people who (mostly) have experience in this area of expertise, so being in know about them is easier than you may think. Maybe newspapers/broadcasters could announce them the day before so that people could be aware and change their plans or you could look it up as an individual if you are afraid it will terribly affect your urgent travel plans. Do you think that you would feel differently about Extinction Rebellion if (1)they were to announce their protests and make it more known to the public? (2) they made allowances for emergency services and people who are in absolute need of transport to help a loved one? Because I think these things could be done and if it would make you feel differently maybe it would also make many other people change their opinion of this necessary, awareness-building work :) Just a thought x

jilliangavin10 Hi, thank you for your well written reply. I would give ER a lot more thought if all those things could be rectified. I however doubt that the planned protests could ever be fully advertised due to the nature of the “shock and awe” approach to causing disruption. You can’t disrupt much when people have planned around the disruption. But certainly a bit more of a heads up than what is currently available is always handy for me personally. I think when people within any group, live it and speak about the group and its actions/values day in and day out, they become consumed and can forget that actually most of the world do not know who they are. I asked many people on my Services and I’d say its about 1 in 6-8 people who have heard or known about ER (my own experience, not stating that as fact) I however disagree with this notion that demonstrations around ports would be little news. As someone in the transport industry I can tell you that the Lorry driver strike, intended a couple of years ago, was a national emergency. If you can replicate the same stagnation of movement in transport, you cause the same outcome. People who are materialistic soon lose their minds when stuff gets delayed or fails to deliver. I mean this is what a lot of the panic is about Brexit. What happens without a deal, do we still get shipments? Well this is a very obvious target for me. But I understand that demonstrations like to be more public facing than away at the docks. I liked your reply, I can always get on board with fellow humans if they approach the topic maturely. Thank you

@@charliewalker9443 Firstly, I also thank you for your respectful reply, I did choose to reply to your message as I could see where you were coming from and you didn't seem to be talking from your ego. I believe this is actually what the internet has the potential to to be used for, conversations and debates between people who don't see eye-to-eye, maybe someone somewhere might even learn something if they give themselves a little time to speak rationally without reacting impulsively- I have been known to be a dreamer :P This brings me to my next point, ''People who are materialistic soon lose their minds when stuff gets delayed or fails to deliver. I mean this is what a lot of the panic is about Brexit. What happens without a deal, do we still get shipments?'' - I hadn't thought of it like this before and i think it is a great point. I guess I lumped this idea together with protests I would see outside an airport in my home country or outside of banks or big factories or corporations like Amazon. But what you are saying is: stick to the idea or civil disruption but consider that people will take a dislike to a cause they know nothing about if it stops them from making a flight for a holiday etc. Tell me if I have you wrong! I completely agree with the fact that a very small percentage know or care what ER is about and what they do know about it is not good. Even talking to my parents or friends about it they say all sorts from; I don't get what they are trying to do, you're just pissing people off, it's stupid, extremist, way over the top, they shouldn't have the word rebellion in the title to leftwing pinkies etc. and this fact should be taken into consideration. Just because I see it all over my tailored-to-me social media does not mean everyone else sees the same thing or knows what I know about the movement. Regarding this point, ''I think when people within any group, live it and speak about the group and its actions/values day in and day out, they become consumed and can forget that actually most of the world do not know who they are.'' I also agree and it is something that I worry about with any movement. It is something that can happen if you don't have some grounded people in there to remind each other of what it looks like and feels like from/on the outside (i.e corrupt and/or clueless politicians). However, I will say that I disagree with you about the idea of shock and awe. I think informing people that protests will be occurring, like the big one that's coming on October 7th, is a great way to make a point, make the news, get talked about and be heard. The only thing I fear with that is that you could get opposing groups coming out in force to oppose them- but that is only a risk when tensions are getting really high. (or a tactic by the right-wing politicians to turn the whole discussion into the Hunger Games distracting from the issue at hand. p.s I liked you're comment too From a fellow human

jilliangavin10 Thanks Jillian, I could not agree more. Respectful communication is something that, Ithink, can only be done by example which is why I have a strong dislike for the British house of Commons, The Young Turks vs Fox News or just a vast amount of feeds. I consider myself to be rather varied in opinion across all topics. (Regarding the ports) Well Thank you, I do believe it is an opportunity that would be extremely risky and rewarding if done correct. The English channel is one of the busiest shipping channels and a full back log hinders every other country we trade with too, along with nearly every freight train in the country. And the crews on board are minimal, no more than a handfull. I would also say that your summary of my stance is pretty accurate. Its always hard to hear your viewpoint summed up in such a tidy box, it always feels like a claustrophobic trap, but I think you have it down correctly. You know what, I actually am in agreement with your last point now, reading it slowly, I think it is true that the event is just as, if not more, engaging by inviting everyone to join in with the event. :D

@@charliewalker9443 Again, thanks for your kindly written message. It really is refreshing to be able to have these kind of conversations in a world where a lot of people are picking sides or ideologies. Watching all the different news broadcasts like the ones you've mentioned is interesting and I have to challenge myself to not follow the band wagon. With the amount of aggression and sly, immature digs they use, I understand why other people are not able to have the resistance - it's hard as they can really press my buttons. Being able to take a step back and look for what's really going on is key. But other broadcasts can be doing the same things just in more subtle ways and those are the ones I, personally, need to be aware of. I used to be more of a fan of John Oliver, Trevor Noah and Samantha Bee. I still watch them (and many of the others) but I do it in a more detached way. I feel it's the only way to form my own opinion. I'll spread your idea about protesting at the docks at the next ER meeting/protest. I think it is functional, to the point and could really disturb the system while harming as little everyday-people as possible :) Great talking with you, Maybe I'll see you on here again, Best to you and yours

I thought of this a long time ago. It's only logical. I don't mean climate terrorism. But rather mean disruption of economy and protests, strikes and so on. But please no war. War only leads to innocent people being harmed. We are better than this. We need benevolent communism with some sort of "freedom" like choosing the color for your house or something trivial. But we need to restrict birth rates, restrict usage of rare resources and so on. Earth is not an infinite paradise, but it is a closed ecosystem. It's math. I always thought, we, as a species, were good at it. We need to find a way to make nations work together, without any compromise. Because we shall not compromise our only known habitat. This is not how it is supposed to be.

Thank you from the furthest reaches of my being for the person that you are becoming, I get it, as much as it is possible to grasp with the knowledge we have and the known unknowns left to find out, I am not a scientist but you don't need to be, paying attention to the science and looking at what is happening makes it very clear. We are dead if we don't do anything big right now, and so are most of all the other species on this planet ..and the cause is our attitude and greed, and allowing ourselves for decades to be led by morally corrupt psychopathy driving itself into the very core of everything. If attitudes don't change then you can achieve shadows, but only through a dramatic shift in mindset can you find any way forward. It isn't about 'us' ... yet this is all there is to be heard and how much economic growth can we build. Many things can occur in stillness but I hope you get a well-deserved rest - though don't rest too much this fucking planet needs YOU and a whole lot of others like you! It might be too late or too little who knows, we will never know that unless we try. This isn't about hoping it is about action that doesn't rely on hope - hope is fragile and easily wiped out just like the ecosystems the Earths life-supporting systems are being right now. Excuses when they arise mean that the reality of this predicament is not being absorbed and lived. There should be people outside drumming all day and all night long across the planet in front of the government buildings across the main transport routes in the inner cities, outside the airports, outside the fossil fuel companies buildings, outside the CEO's personal living spaces right across the globe. The biggest crime against life is going down right now in front of our eyes ... and yet we turn away and carry on ... carry on with what? carry on with keeping those to blame in power and continuing to light a fire to end all fires. Extreme weather events should be broadcast every day on mass media .. most people haven't got a CLUE what is happening, and data is being altered and hidden from the public domain, most don't use that information or access the sites but it is happening and it isn't that subtle either, think NASA. Why? So they can continue to do more of the same - anything else other than their profits is expendable. Strenght to you Roger, and all those (including me ) who are behind you to the very last.

Clearly you haven't seen the scientific papers. Climate collapse is already underway. If we carry on as we are, the total collapse of our society is guaranteed within a few decades, followed soon afterwards by the extinction of the human race. It's already too late to prevent societal collapse, but if the human race is to survive long-term, we have about a decade to start seriously working on mitigation. This is not the opinion of some rogue scientists on the fringe - it's the consensus of the mainstream of climate scientists.

Thank you for demonstrating leadership Roger! I love your metaphor about breaking down the door when there's a fire in the house. Economic disruption is indeed key. In addition to road blocking protests how can XR as an organized force be even more disruptive economically? For example, how about coordinating withdrawals from the banks, or mass sell-offs of stock, mass defaults. I think helping to bring about a collapse sooner rather than later might be the best strategic long-term play. It's not without it's costs of course, but it might be the only thing that can effectively work at this point to avoid a more massive collapse scenario.
