I agree with you about the shabbyness of the box set, it could/should have been better. Though i have a slight issue with your comments about Roger's concerts....i saw Roger's Us & Them concert in Glasgow and it was by far the greatest concert i've ever saw live. Lyrically the man's head and shoulders above the other Pink Floyd members, and Amused To Death is metaphorically on the button. It's his masterpiece, as fine as any Pink Floyd album, and as relevant today as it was upon release. Roger's solo albums come closest to what Pink Floyd became famous for, thematic albums blended into a core concept; the other members solo albums just don't hold the same gravitas as his do. Pink Floyd were a powerhouse when they were all working in harmony. Their later albums (minus Roger) don't hold the same lyrical weight as such and just aren't as impactful, even though they still play brautifully. I love Pink Floyd, my favourite band of all time. Dark Side Of The Moon may well be the perfect album, but it isn't Pink Floyd's best album (in my opinion). Animals is my personal favourite Pink Floyd album; Roger's gritty, biting lyrics, David's stellar guitar playing, Richard's harmonious synthesisers and Nick's perfect padded beats are a beautiful concoction to behold. Shame about that box set though 😐
I meant no disrespect, please don't take it as such. I agree with you that Roger may use backing tracks or whatever else, but they were his backing tracks too;and if he chooses to use it at his concerts then i (and probably millions of other fans) really don't have a problem with that. It's really a matter of opinion, though to be honest David Gilmour live at Pompeii was a brilliant concert too, and damn, can he play a guitar. I just prefer the way Roger creates an (solo) album compared to the way Pink Floyd did without him. I'm a lyric person, the music (for me personally) accentuates the story being told and i just love the way Roger's albums are a cohesive whole as opposed an album full of songs. I loved your review of Amused to death, it's my favourite album of all time, i think it's on a par with my favourite Pink Floyd album, Animals. Thanks for understanding, your opinions (and everyone else's) are as valid as my own....that's why so many people love Pink Floyd's music, it creates discussion among fans who love their music. I agree, David's concerts are probably more accurate musically to Pink Floyd's golden era, whereas Roger's is (in my opinion) more asthetically (pyrotechnics, visually, stage show-like) accurate. It's really a matter of what people want from the concert i suppose. Regardless, i'd still go see both of them live 🙂
Hahaha, you said you don't have respect for Roger, because he plays on playback. It is rather sad that he does this, I agree with you too (I noticed his playback when I went to all his concerts - during the shows in Budapest - in 2002 and in 2007), especially because he is so critical of his former colleagues David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright who all played really well on their tours in 1987-1990 and in 1994. Delicate Sound of Thunder and Pulse are proof that they are great musicians. Roger has problem with bad hearing.
