Roger Whittaker - The Last Farewell 1975
There's a ship lies rigged and ready in the harbour
Tomorrow for old England she sails
Far away from your land of endless sunshine
To my land full of rainy skies and gales
And I shall be aboard that ship tomorrow
Though my heart is full of tears at this farewell
For you are beautiful, and I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
For you are beautiful, and I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
I've heard there's a wicked war a-blazing
And the taste of war I know so very well
Even now I see the foreign flag a-raising
Their guns on fire as we sail into hell
I have no fear of death, it brings no sorrow
But how bitter will be this last farewell
For you are beautiful, and I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
For you are beautiful, and I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
Though death and darkness gather all about me
My ship be torn apart upon the seas
I shall smell again the fragrance of these islands
And the heaving waves that brought me once to thee
And should I return home safe again to England
I shall watch the English mist roll through the dale
For you are beautiful, and I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
For you are beautiful, and I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell

As a music lover I've always asked myself what my favourite tune ever is... depends on what mood I'm in. Today it's The Last Farewell, makes me cry. This will always be in my top ten. Nostalgia - first heard this circa 1975 in a cafe with my parents as a small boy, in Devon, UK. Loved it then and love it now. RW's voice was superb!

Back in the 70s this song was starting when my clock radio came on . I awoke to a flash of a dream of tropical paradise sunrise/sunset in full color and that warm fuzzy feeling of love smiling. My husband asked what you so happy about as I trotted to the kitchen to make coffee. I love this song as that flashback happens every time I hear this song. Ahhh the warm fuzzies …

I first heard this song as a schoolboy at aged nine, and it moved me even then. Having had an ex-pat career, over nine countries and 30-odd years,, and always longing to return to England, I still find it moving to this day. It's truly beautiful song, wonderfully delivered by Roger. The lyrics still stir me and the melody and the message remains uplifting to this day. Thanks Roger!

@@misterteaification You can't sing without breathing no matter how effortless looool, you're just misinterpreting what the comment meant, he means the times you can hear the breathing just shows the technique, the voice and his control of it is effortless and as the comment said, he is absolutely a true master and a vastly, vastly short-changed one in music history.
@misterteaification
@misterteaification Год назад
"You can't sing without breathing no matter how effortless" No, you don't say! "you're just misinterpreting what the comment meant, he means the times you can hear the breathing just shows the technique" Real "technique" would hide the effort being made - it often used to be called 'the art that conceals art'.
@grayaj23
@grayaj23 Год назад
Hearing him inhaling is an artifact of how the song was mixed/mastered. It was probably tracked with some very strong compression, which raises the volume of the soft parts and reduces the volume of the hard parts. It makes a great recording, and makes the singer's voice sound intimate and interesting. While this isn't the version that got played on the radio, it's still likely that this was not a live performance, or at least the track was remixed after-the-fact. I bet it didn't sound like that live. It's a great recording of a great song, though.

My daddy would sing this to me. As his cancer got worse the lyrics became more prominent in my mind. I held his hand and told him to come back and get me when it’s my turn. He shook his head yes. I played this song at his funeral. Still tugs at my heartstrings when I listen to it. 😢

I have always been a fan of Roger Whittaker. The first LP I bought for myself with my own money was of him.

When I listen to him sing I am transported .He touches my soul like no other has ever done before . His voice is breathtaking in its simplicity and every word has meaning . He is getting old and I fear the day when I hear of his passing .It will be like losing an old friend .Stay healthy Roger .We need you in this world.

***** Thanks. I find as I get older I can listen to music that isn’t written by Bach or Led Zep. Saw your page and noticed you are as disturbed by religious lunatics as I am as an Anglican.
