Quis custodiet custodes. A two thousand year old warning about the dangers of a police state. It is yet another example of English exceptionalism, the wishful assertion that our justice system is unimpeachable. It isn't and that lies at the heart of our problematic society and our problematic Union.

@@chriswright3179 It's not important, really. Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? is a Latin phrase found in the Satires (Satire VI, lines 347-348), a work of the 1st-2nd century Roman poet Juvenal. It may be translated as "Who will guard the guards themselves?" or "Who will watch the watchmen?".

The issue is that this person got through the recruitment process in the first place. And that his supervision was so deficient no-one knew about his tendencies. In this comtext, rouge agents are as much a threat as the threats we employ them to guard against. Temperament is key to being effective and reliable. However, nothing human is perfect, and things go wrong. I worry in the struggle to shape our nation, the Unintended consequence is to create more people like him who are quite unfitted for critical roles in society. We had the issue of undesirables entering the police, because effective recruitment was subjugated to the then Home Secretary's need to harmer headlines. Perhaps that has spread to MI5 too. A unreliable or uncontrollable sheepdog is a danger to the shepherd and the flock. Just a thought.

@melissaherrity Месяц назад
@johnshaw8288 isn't there a difference between 'agents' and 'officers' of MI?. An 'agent' is just someone the agency recruits to do the spying, so they will be criminals , or members of a targeted organisation. An MI5 officer is someone who is employed by and works in MI5 and runs the agents they will go through a positive vetting process. I don't know anything about this case but the professor hasn't made it clear in the video which this man is.

"What type of people are recruited?" People perceived as being useful or potentially useful. That's it, pretty much. The old idea of 'being a decent sort' never was much more than window dressing and it's gone completely now. Expecting ethics from people whose employment often demands a lack of them and organisations whose entire existence is based on lies of one sort or another is admirable optimism but I fear unrealistic. 'Beth' unfortunately pays the price in this case but government will view her abuse as a sacrifice they are more than willing to make.

The ability to act, the ability to be a convincing liar, the ability to shoot to kill, and the ability to steal secrets and recruit others. As for James Bond, they should have ended that at the end of the first film with Bond diving into the Thames and dying of toxic poisoning.

James Bond worked for MI6 this agent works for MI5. This tragic case dates back to 2022, but should we be surprised that it has been a cover-up, and the BBC were told to shut up. There are certain things that happen in life that shoudn't but certain people are above the law that the rest of us can't escape from. This doesn't make it right, but fighting it is not a good idea.

I dont think this is a fault of the judge but a great misser of the government but if the court can't hold the government accountable who can? And if no one can or will do it (looking at you the party that has a majority in parliament and thus doesn't want to be too critical) how do we fix it. It's clear that something is broken

I am with you on this one , especially regarding Ethics and consistency. They M15 think that they are so lofty that they can breach the law. You would be surprised how ubiquitous an approach under cloak and dagger this is. One dangerous female who murdered two little boys , had her own In House 24/7 police person as she was a problem to others wherever she went . But for subtle reasons police had to prove that reintegrating her into Society was their turn around success story. To the disadvantaged cost of the woman’s victims. That guy , the woman and others is Overreach by people who do not function as they should. Their sense of power goes to their heads , so they overreach and breach the Law. Time to account.

Nothing I say here is an excuse for his abuse and actions but: Sometimes the bad people are the only ones who have access and/or can be manipulated to do the stuff that's necessary. And I've not yet been able to work out why does his status as an agent/informer etc. for the intelligence services have any bearing at all on the case?

What kinds of people are accepted into and within agencies such as MI 5 or 6, or their equivalents elsewhere? Aming the various questions and tests you go through prior to acceptance and entry , will depends very much on how you answer these 2 key question.... Firstly, they'll ask ...." What are you willing to do or be, on behalf of your king, your country your nation's security, ? " Then they'll ask you the second question...." What are you NOT prepared to do or be on behalf of your government , your king, your nation's security?". Think about it , professor Tim. Do you think the way someone like you would probably answer these 2 question, would make you " suitable material" for MI 5 or 6?

What suggests he’s a right wing extremist? Serious question. Is there an article I can go to?
@chrism7969
@chrism7969 Месяц назад
That's kind of difficult to answer it is alleged that he was recruited and used to infiltrate right wing organisations overseas because he was already involved in that world. The problem is given that we don't know his identity and MI5 won't even confirm he was an agent or any details of what he did it makes it impossible to find any concrete evidence that he was a right wing extremist. How can we know what he was if we don't know who he was? So all you will see is news reports that make this claim without substantial evidence. However, one has to question where this claim came from and I would suggest it came from evidence that was provided at the trial that Beth is involved in. So I suspect that he has told her that he was an MI5 agent and that she saw that he was directly involved in extremist rightwing politics. However I doubt that the evidence he was involved in right-wing politics will be released to the public because that would risk identifying him, which MI5 and the government are intent on preventing happening. So I suspect the only thing you are going to see are claims being made at the trial.
