That’s the thing, Critical Drinker is forty-years-old and has written seven novels in the last ten years. You think he’s improved over the course. But then you hear the dialogue from this trailer and… oh, boy.
(From someone who works full time in the film industry) - It's great to see more people giving filmmaking a go. However, this is a great example of how hard it is to make a decent movie. It's also a great example of how comparatively easy it is to be a film critic versus a film maker. This shit takes a lifetime of dedication to get right. I'm sure this has been and will continue to be a humbling experience for all involved. Please keep writing and keep creating though! Could be worth making a short, or proof of concept and hiring a script editor who's got some decent industry credits to vet the script and concept before going into production. Looking forward to seeing what's next man!
You do realize you're talking about a guy who just made his first film, with a crowd funded budget at that, and not a Hollywood sized Film with a 80 to 100 million dollar budget right. I get it, people don't like the guy, but when you look at the comment section, more people are criticizing him more, than the actual trailer. It's no John Wick trailer I agree, but it's not the worst trailer on the internet whatsoever also...
@Niotumi The criticism ain't personal. It's just that he speaks so much about low quality filmmaking in Hollywood and then goes on to make something so generic that even Steven Seagal would pass at this point.
@@peakcinemalover 😂😂😂 I totally agree for the most part, it is a generic movie plot... Something we have seen a million times before... But I'm curious, what budget did he have for the movie though?

Just hard cut after the credits to the Drinker picture with "What? Were you expecting an after credits scene? This isn't that kind of movie. Go away now."
Horror would have been a better first attempt at a film, imo. The budget for making a horror movie tends to be not that expensive, the ideas have more flexibility to transform the narrative into something original, and audiences tend to be more forgiving about the flaws since the genre is well known for its quirks and imperfections. An action film really requires an experienced director for it to not come off extremely generic, unoriginal, and cliche. I'm still hoping the best for any and all independent content creators out there, especially Drinker because I've been following his channel for almost 4 years now, but I still think its important to add constructuve criticism where needed.
Drinker isn't interested in making a good movie or improving his skills as a filmmaker, he wants to make *his* movie that's about a white guy saving the world.
True, but look at all the movies S. Craig Zahler has written and directed. Low budgets, yet better than 90% of movies with 10x the budget. Though they do all have a bit of horror to them, they are more action thriller suspense movies, similar to this one at first glance. It can be done.
I agree maybe a different genre would have been my preference. Along with all the Liam neison films, john wicks, and mr Nobody, this genre feels a little tired out. There has to be something exceptionally creative in its premise to really shine. John Wick was a bit refreshing with its secret society story-line that I enjoyed.
@@kostastube2010 I could see him doing a Sacha Baron Cohen type of approach where the entire film is the Drinker meeting with actual screen writers and directors to pitch his ideas. "Ssssso, I got a proposiiissstiioon for Mister Weinsteeen. It involves a woman named Tattiana....BWAHAHAAHHAA"

Ryan Drake's superiors don't understand his methods. He doesn't play by the book but he gets results. If he disobeys orders one more time his chief will have his badge. He wants payback because his best buddy was just gunned down. He was one day from retirement. This is exactly the kind of fresh, unpredictable writing the modern movie industry has been waiting for.

Same here. I started following the Drinker when he was doing the resident evil series, before he went completely scottish. He gave people what they want. We reward him with our subscription. That's how free market works.
The fact that a RU-vidr can get even a small budget short film released gives me hope for the future of filmaking; especially when you think how hard it must be to get into the industry. Good on you, Drinker.

Whoof! Judging by the acting and the dialogue in the trailer making a good movie might be a little tougher than you expected, eh Drinker? Normally I wouldn't judge too much by the trailer alone, but since that's one of your favourite things to do I don't feel particularly conflicted about it.
Some critique: Characters. Need. To. Enunciate. I could hardly understand half the dialog lines. Their British / Scottish accents made things worse, not better, because they were very much not the BBC English that Americans are used to. But everybody in your movie needs to understand that speaking clearly, not lengthily, is very important. Half of the scenes that didn't feel great can be saved in the edit with overdubs, but they'll need it. The scene where the Badass Operative's about to enter? It's all wrong. Character should hear a radio voice saying, "you can't go in there, wait for backup" / "it's too dangerous" / insert action-movie trope here. But Main Character? He should be silent. He's got his pistol's magazine out; he's counting rounds. Action, not dialog. Cut to Bad Guys sitting there Guarding The MacGuffin; now we have two POVs and the scene is set. Radio voice ends. Close up to door flying open. Super close-up to the barrel of the Main Character's gun. Fires; either show Bad Guys dropping, or cut to next scene- either way, the audience knows what happened here. The scene with the knife-wielding guy and the Main Character? Needs to be reshot. The men should be almost touching faces; they should be making eye contact. The audience should see everything they're feeling. The way it's shot and cut is awkward. The torture scene? IDK what to make of that, except that it doesn't have the drama it required. What you really want, in a movie like this, is something that feels like the torture scene from Payback. That was classic. Look at the tension, the pacing. Sure, none of your actors are in that league, but most of what made that scene work was the pace, the humor, and the sense of the stakes involved. You don't have much budget. That's fine. Don't do things that require much budget. Use trickery, like not actually showing people getting shot, unless it's absolutely required to make a scene work. Use your writing skills, but don't be enamored with dialogs that take too long; it's better that the film is short but good than that it drags. Frame and explain through action. Keep cuts short. Drive pacing and tension in action scenes by gradually accelerating the cuts (this is a cool trick that's been used in quite a few good movies, such as 28 Days Later). Most importantly, don't lose hope. Most problems can be saved in editing. You know how to do that, and you have help, and you have good taste. It'll be fine!
This is the most "put your money where your mouth is" move I have ever seen. Shitting on movies on RU-vid is one thing, but to have the balls to put yourself out there and try to do it better is worthy of insane respect. Congrats Drinker!!!!

I love you, CD but this does looks pretty rough; and I’ll say that what looks the most rough about it is the acting. That’s always the weakest link in low budget stuff. As a first time director, I know it’s insanely hard to get the best performance out of your actors.

The bit the backers have gotten to see look like blockbuster movie quality. I’m sure the budget will make its presence known to some extent, but the quality of the picture looks like what you’d expect from a Hollywood movie.
For someone who talks shit about Hollywood for a living, I'm honestly not surprised he inevitably had a "fine I'll do it myself" moment, only to succeed in creating another incredibly generic movie like everyone else in the film industry. A problem that no one seems to realize is that the film industry has been completely oversaturated for years. No one can come up with a good story or an original story because it's all been done already. Everything is just a rip-off of something else, and even this guy can't escape that fact.
While I always hope for people outside of the big studios to succeed, I'm not super hopeful here. Drinker and his friends know a lot about good storytelling, but doing an action movie short (even if based on his novels) is probably not the best starting point to show that. As Shawn Coyne likes to say: The pure action story is the hardest to do, since it's extremely hard to innovate it. And I think you can really feel that in this trailer. Well, hopefully I'm wrong. And at least it will not have to make 100 million to break even.
I wasent expecting it to look better than the holywood equivalent. The problem is the dialog. . . . Without that it looks great for what it is. But without alot of re shoots how can they erase all that cheesy dialog . . . .
I love drinker and wish him all the luck in the world, but it looks like not my cup of tea. If it turns out sub-par hope he’ll learn the right lessons and improve it in the next projects. We need independent movies, the more the better.
Can't imagine what it must feel like to have something you've cared for and nurtured be put on screen. I am looking forward to this, and regardless of how it fares, well done on getting here, Will. I love your books and your Drinker persona. Thanks for the good work!
There is actually valid reason for those kinds of trailers. There is certain section of the general audience who wants to know what they are getting before making buying decision. Those "reveals the whole plot" type of trailers cater to those people who do not want to go a movie if they do not know if they will like it. They are picking movie for e.g. date night they rather choose "safe" option instead of some movie they know nothing about. It boils down to marketing and money, naturally studios want to reach a many people as possible. Which is one reason why many movies have more than one trailer, other one usually opens things much more than the other.
I guess writting a movie is hard af cause even after identifying hundreds as shit this looks dubious... maybe its just the acting and cinematography but its just seems like something everyone has watched before. As a subscriber and long time viewer im shocked
The problem is that he can identify a shit movie but not necessarily understand why. Like he's so focused on the political aspects of movies that he doesn't seem to have a grasp on how to actually make a film or have a compelling narrative (or not make the entire colour pallete piss yellow, apparently)
@@topwomble Most quality films go over his head anyway. He only gets away with it because he can point at a film everyone knows is bad and cal it bad. In reality he's completely unwilling to take risks, with anything he puts out, hence why this is just a bunch of familiar tropes and off the rack characters.
Holy shit Drinker’s actually making a movie himself?! Hah, take that Chris Stuckmann! You CAN make movies in the industry and still be extremely critical of it as well!
This has some serious potential. One good thing about these companies not learning their lesson is that more independent creators are going to inevitably come forward and give the people what they want in entertainment again. Congrats so far guys. I’m excited to see what else you’ve got coming.

This is somewhere between "OK this actually looks promising" and "Nah this looks kinda shyte", and realistically I think it's a bit of both. Stuff like the talking to someone through an earpiece before changing plans in the middle of an operation, and the cliche 'we're in for a long night cuz I don't know shit' is pretty cringe inducing, but some of the camera work, the sound design etc, some of it does look well done.
I think they would have benefitted from having a consultant. Finding a legitimate one when you're a startup/indie company is probably tricky, though. It comes off like old school action from the 80s, etc., hunting for one-liners and a 'cool guy' vibe instead of realism. Maybe that was deliberate?
@@dawnfire82 Very true, it's obvious that the Drinker is a huge fan of 80s/90s action flicks and some of the choices here may be by design. I bet this is a really decent flick, Your cinematographer looks great, and the LUTs your colorists are setting look good ... Be careful of your sound edit ... it's the only thing that's maybe cheapening the trailer. (I am responding to all the armchair critics giving their opinions) It's an often overlooked detail that can lift a production the last mile over the finish line and when not done well will give the whole production a cheap malaise. Nice work though, I am looking forward to analyzing your story for the apparent great understanding of structure and arch.
