Zeide Meir Schmellner was the scion of a distinguished Hasidic dynasty, and married into a similarly elevated family. Although he was a brilliant rabbinic scholar and a charismatic speaker, his explosion into the field of international peace in 1925 took everyone by surprise. Rabbi Dunner delves into the story of this unusual Romanian rabbi, charting a career that took him from Bukovina, to Paris, to New York, and eventually a brush with the law that landed him in Sing Sing. One of the most shocking stories of any rabbi in modern history.

I understand that instead of flowers, we are to leave rocks at the gravesite. It is allowed for a family member to collect nice rocks and paint them in colors that the deceased really liked and or the deceased person’s name or initials and a short prayer that we could have the rocks available for family members to leave the special rocks at the gravesite or do they have to be plain? In addition, is it appropriate for a person close to the deceased to give a short speech about key points in the deceased live similar to a someone that feels strongly about giving a short story of the person’s life. Lastly, are we allowed to leave a letter or a book that meant a lot between the mourner and the deceased in the casket before it closes for good. Any direction about these items would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Niicole

Yes to the rocks question. I don't understand the second question - when and where would this speech be given, and why would you think it's not ok? As to the third question, the custom is not to leave anything in the coffin that is personal effects.

@@EliM100 True, but I say this only because Rabbi Dunner mentioned the 3rd Tolner Rebbe in this video.

I love your obscure stories, and I can’t get enough of them, just for my conscience, is this considered loshon horah?

I also enjoyed the first 2 episodes, but came away with the same concern and am refraining from viewing this one. It would be great if Rabbi Dunner can explain why it is not...

Pini, fantastic work. Entertaining as one would expect. But. One may not speat against שוכני עפר. Remove and disassociate yourself from all there presentation. Study and teach Torah - just as a Dunner should!

Shalom, I would like to know if Jews consider it acceptable to pray to deceased ancestors, forefathers, or "saints" like some Christians in the Catholic tradition do. Deuteronomy 18:11 would seem to prohibit speaking with the dead or praying to them, and several pagan religions have "ancestor cults" where they pray to their predecessors. Therefore I would expect it to be explicitly forbidden in Judaism to pray to any of the dead, whether they were righteous or wicked.

No one in Judaism prays “to the dead” by we pray next to their grave so that the the soul can pray for us and merit of the person’s good deeds will stand for us in good stead. Being near the grave of the righteous also brings you thoughts of repentance as well.
