I went with the rokinon 24mm for astrophotography on my sony a7ii. Works great at night, and is more useful for other landscapes in the daytime too. Was able to use it a lot on a recent trip to Sedona and the Grand Canyon and use ND filters with it.

There are two great options from Rokinon for mirrorless APS-C cameras; 8mm f2.8 fisheye and 12mm f2.0. These lenses are designed for mirrorless cameras, and they are not available for DSLR's. Lens in this review is designed for DSLR and later adapted for mirrorlass, like Toby's Sony A7RII

This was the first lens I bought with my low budget range and I couldnt be more satisfied with it. I use it on my Nikon D5500. Like in the video it is great for starry nights and the milky way, but i have gotten plenty of use out of it for daytime shots. Great when overcast or in a shaded area like a forest to pick up the full dynamic range. All around great lens for the entry level or casual photographer.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I received it last night and today I'll be taking it to a waterfall and mountainous area along with my D810 and 35mm Sigma, looking forward to it! I have been wanting an ultra wide for a while. Next lens will be a 105mm macro I think! A shame I cannot use my CPL and ND filters but I'm going to use image averaging to get an ND effect if I can't slow the shutter enough. :)

I sold my Tokina 11-16 and bought the Vivitar version of this lens when I made my jump to Full Frame, for night sky shots it's really quite amazing and I shot one of my best-ever photos with it. It does sometimes leave me wanting to go back to a wide-angle zoom however as it's often too wide for what I want, but for the price of it, who can argue?

I've had my Sony a7r2 are for about a year now along with my Rokinon 14mm F2.8 manual lens. Has anyone had the same frustration with focusing this lens. My copy is no where near hyper focal for accuracy and seems to change on a daily basis depending on if I am focusing from the left or right of the hyper focal currently marked. I've had other copies of different Rokinon glass which were very good for hyper focal points. However, I am missing way too many night shots, and day shots for that matter, with this lens. Any suggestions would be welcome. I have used focus assist, not focus assist and so one but pinning this thing down has been tuff. Thanks in advance....Tim

12mm Prime Rokinon f2.0 lens is a great deal. Has a flat lens rather than domed lens, so you can use filters. Also it's great for mirrorless camera's and has 110 degree angle rather than a 90 degree which the 14mm has.

I agree with the comments about focusing the 10-18mm... My last astro session was a total bust, since I just could not find infinity on that lens! I bought this Rokinon, and will be trying it out on my 5DII when I get some clear skies. I did wonder about whether the 'stop' was actually at infinity or a bit beyond, but it has to be easier than the Canon!

Hi Sir! Nice video! Im confused and i cant choose between 10mm f 2.8(crop version) and 14mm f2.8(full frame version). Which one is better for my crop camera(d5500)? Im afraid that 14mm will be better overall because it is for full frame and i dont know if i have to sacrifice some mm to get the 14mm or the 10mm will be perform the same. Please help me!

Just curious to know when turning the focusing ring does the lens go beyond the manual mark all the way to the infinity symbol? I have the same lens but it is branded as Samyang and it does not stop at the manual mark but continues on to the infinity symbol on the lens barrel. I'm never sure which to set the lens on when photographing the stars. The images look the same to me.

I definitely think that the 14mm is very useful in landscape photography as long as the composition is right. As you did you need leading lines or a true foreground interest. I also enjoy the fact it is so manual, I'm a Canon user so don't get the in focus beep Nikon users have, so it slows me right down making sure everything is in focus etc and it's beautifully sharp. I also agree you can get great landscapes on the 70-200 which I usually have with me and I also use the Sigma 18-35 which can be an amazing lens. But the best tool for landscapes is thinking about your composition.

It appears to be a cheaper alternative for astrophotography. However can the newly launched 16-35 f2.8 gmaster be used for the astrophotography? It seems even g master is with focus by wire lens and infinity focus can be an issue. Also unlike Canon L lenses, G Master do not have the focus dial.

I've heard that the crop factor also applies to the aperture. Not only does it change the lens focal length but it would change the aperture from 2.8 to 4.0 in this video.

Having to manually focus doesn’t bother me but you need to have good vision imgs.love/RokinonLens or wear your glasses/contacts. How is this working for you on your T5i? I also have a T5i and considering getting this lens. Is it wide enough for stars? Currently I have my 18-55 kit lens and the Rokinon 8mm fisheye lens, but it's only a 3.5. I want to know how this lens works for star photography on a crop sensor at 2.8.
@ancientfishing
@ancientfishing 7 лет назад
It depends, I like the 14mm for full frame cameras, but I prefer the f1.4 24mm for APS-C. Its a great landscape lens also.
@MyFavoriteVegan
@MyFavoriteVegan 7 лет назад
So the f3.5 fisheye would still get the job done for star photography or no? I already have the fisheye lens, I just haven't gotten around to trying the night shots. As far as the wide angle lens, since I use a Canon t5i, I was thinking of getting the Rokinon 10mm 2.8, but if the fisheye will work fairly good, I'd rather save a few hundred and not get another lens. What do you think? ps. My photography is just for fun and not actual work. But you know how it is, you get a camera and you want ALL the lenses. lol

@prakkari
@prakkari 7 лет назад
Use it on my Sony a7r for aurora photography. Simply the best. $300 is a steal. Can not think of a more expensive lens matching its quality. Lightroom takes good care of the distortion, though not perfectly near the edges. With my 32Mp I can afford a little crop to get rid of that. If you are shooting Aurora borealis, this is the perfect lens. No issues focusing. Infinity is where it is supposed to be, so I focus in the dark without seeing a damn thing.

Hi Toby, Is Canon T6(i/s) + Canon 10-18 mm a good pair for landscapes for Sony A6000 + Rokinon(14mm/12mm)

+Nandish A Please watch ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-A_Hwdc-_Sks.html but yes - they give you similar views. Canon is less versatile with starting f/4.5 but very good during daytime.

I have a Crop sensor DSLR, but I'm aware Rokinon make a 10mm f2.8, looking at the example you provided I'm a bit disappointed it isn't much wider than the kit lense, stuck between this and a Tokina 11-16mm for my D3300 (wouldn't be able to use autofocus). Any input will be massively appreciated! Both lenses will be used for astrophotography.

is it good with a canon eos 80d?

Samyang/Rokinon is a really good and cheap lens for astrophotography, but one of the best lens I'm using that works even better is Tamron SP 15-30/2,8 Di VC USD.If you buy a used Tokina 11-16 f/2., be aware not to buy the mark-I that have problem with coma, and make the stars looks like arrows in the corner of the picture.

Hi, thank you for this review. Did you have the chance to test the new version of this lens with autofocus? Samyang AF 14mm F2.8 FE? Will this new version still be a good option?

I have not had a chance to test yet but I love the new IRIX - see ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8An3dzcgCWE.html

how about the Laowa 15mm f/2 FE Zero-D? and what about the Sony FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM?

The Samyang 14mm f/2.8 (same lens as yours) was one of my first purchases for night photography. I know it's known as a "budget lens" but damn, I get some fantastic and sharp images using that. It's still my go to lens though I'm finding some neat Astro uses for my Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART lens!

+LoriBravo Right - just because it is a budget lens doesn't mean we should discount it as no pro or serious - it is fantastic!

How about distortion and vignetting? Is it reasonable to buy samyang 35mm f1.4 instead of this lens and capture sky and star night with panaroma trick???

The Rokinon does have some distortion and vingetting but it is still a great budget pick. The 35mm f/1.4 on a full frame is OK but better is something in the 20 - 24 range that is f/1.4 or f/1.8
