This is a quick video I made because I could not find a guide to do this for my specific lens. There is another one in Spanish that seems to be for a slightly different model of this lens.
Apologies for my messed up hands, falling off a bike will do that to you :)

Great explanation, glad to see it explained in English. I had a Rokinon 8mm that needed this, hard stop in wrong place. It must use a different method as I did not see a window like that.

Awesome! Watched it several times and did it. It is sharp now, but will wait for landscape testing. I just bought this lens and focus was wayyyyyy offf. I thought about returning it, but will wait. I have a summary: (for those who like to read) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Setting the close distance stop 1. focus on something at the minimum distance of the lens at f2.8 2. tape the aperture ring and distance ring together 3. fold the grip down. when new, it's very flexy 4. using a small watch flat screwdriver (FIND THIS FIRST!!!), loosen 3 screws. 5. drag the metal ring all the way to the right (it may already be there) 6. retighten the screws. 7. take off the tape you put on earlier Setting the correct infinity stop 8. carefully focus to something far (15-30 feet) 9. avoid changing the focus at "infinity' (disregard the focus ring position) 10. fold up the bottom of the grip to reveal the taped on focus ring 11. remove the "scotch tape' all around the distance ring 12. if the distance ring is not loose, try to jimmy it loose between the focus ring and grip area 13. align the infinity marker to taste. Remember to push it back up towards the front of lens. 14. retape and replace grip to stock Enjoy!

Three things... 1. Thanks for the video and taking away the fear of busting into one's lens. My Rokinon sees infinity at the 3 Mark and it gets blurry any higher. 2. For those that are confused why to do this procedure, realize that some Rokinon lenses out of the box won't ever achieve focus at infinity and one needs to free up the 3 set screw ring to even allow the lens to get to infinity or closeup due to bad factory calibration. This is completely independent of the markings on the focus ring. 3. Eric where did you get tripod?? Good work man.

I was preparing for a night shoot and thought it would be a good time to calibrate and memorize my infinity focus points on several lenses. I was surprised that or this (Samyang) lens infinity focus was between 3 and 4 feet on the distance ring. I was happy to find your instructions, but since my main concern was infinity focus mark, I modified as follows: 1. Slip rubber collar up against lens shade 2. Fold over half closest to camera. 3. Focus at infinity 4. Loosen the three small screws (not much) then move the metal ring in the window TO THE LEFT until it stops, then tighten screws 5. Be careful that you don't out of focus...check it again after the next step 6. Tease up the 3 pieces of tape, just the part that covers just the distance ring. 7. Align the focus mark with the infinity mark. Replace the tape. You might also wan to add a couple more pieces of tape in the blank area. 8. Confirm that your infinity focus is correct. Repeat steps 5-7 if you need to improve it. Intestingly, my near focus changed from 13 inches (to subject to sensor) to 11 inches. This is still 3 inches farther from the subject than my 12 mm Rokinon.

I did the same thing, but it's best to remove the tape and keep it intact and replace it after turning the ring to infinity focus position, then replace the tape which "will" block the system, I get the impression yours will change over time! Can be done at ant time of course!

Hi, I just need an explanation. In the spanish version, they put the Focus to the Infinity to do the fix. In your version you put the focus to the nearest object. What is the good way ? And when you say nearest point, at what distance is it ? Thank you
@CasanOffi
@CasanOffi 6 лет назад
The minimum focal distance for this lens is 28mm (it´s what the manual said). It makes much more sense to calibrate it to the minimum focus, because hyperfocal distance is not always the same, it can vary…

Hi' Thanks a lot for this technique !! Before i try it, does it change the calibration for the focus at infinity ? For me, the samyang is perfectly calibrated at the shortest distance but has the infinity at 0,5m on the ring... Thus, i dont want an "offset" of Calibration (i don't know if m'y question is clear ^^')
@parranoic

After doing this myself I would say it's not worth doing. On crop the lens marks align perfectly, on ff it goes beyond infinity which allows it to be used on both. If you calibrate it for that particular setup you might not be able to focus it on another body. That being said both this video and the Spanish one make it more complicated than it needs to be. Set lens at f2.8, remove rubber, go outside and set the lens on a tripod, focus the lens on the furthest building you can see, that's your infinity focus. Unscrew the 3 screws slightly, move the silver ring inside the hole left with the tip of the screwdriver till it hits the hard stop (you can move it forwards and backwards to verify if it hits something), this will make it so that the focus position you've set on the building makes the ring stop making it easily to focus on stars at night. Screw it back and remove the old adhesive since the I wont be on infinity. It spins freely just like on the video, turn it so that I is on the middle of the infinity sign, hold it with one hand and tape it down like the old adhesive bands. Put the rubber back, you re done. Now one issue you will have is since you're essentially reducing the focus throw on the minimum distance the lens might become stiff, in this sense the method showed in this video is better, focus on the closest object and then turn the distance ring so the I matched with the 8 from the 0.28 m mark like so 0.28I, then you should not have any issues with the infinity being stiff. Hope this helps, thanks to the maker of this video for helping a lot when i tried this the first time

Somehow, the lens never achieves the sharp focus, even when fully locked to the right - do you think I am missing something? I can see that it is only getting the edges in focus at about 1mtr and that too not very sharp. It has always been great lens but now getting annoyed getting it fixed :( Any more tips??

well done and informative video. But what is the nearest focus distance you are talking. Tried it with my samyang lens and could focus with the open three screws on a distance, maybe 10 cm.
@NoLensCap
@NoLensCap 7 лет назад
The nearest focus distance is listed as 11 inces (28 cm). You can also try it with the hyper-focal too and that would work. So before you take out the screws (or if you already have the screws exposed, just leave one tight), find the hyper-focal, then adjust the metal ring in the "window". Then lock the 3 screws down and then adjust the range scale. Hope that makes sense
@NoLensCap
@NoLensCap 7 лет назад
Also make sure to make the screws lose when adjusting the metal ring in the tiny window.

@donnieanderson2682
@donnieanderson2682 7 лет назад
If you are doing astrophotography it is difficult or time consuming to adjust focus at night. You need to look at a bright star, zoom in on the screen, and try to focus it perfectly. It is difficult at night since the star is not bright and hard to see on the screen, and the camera is difficult to use unless you wear a headlamp. The infinite focus point may not be exactly at the end with the ring turned all the way left till it stops. It may be a bit before. So this calibration it to set the focus perfectly when the focus ring is turned all the way to the stop. Once calibrated when you head out at night, turn the focus ring all the way left you should be bang on. It makes things easier. The second part of removing the tape is just to rotate the distance indicator ring so the infinity mark now lines up when you are all the way left. It's lined up when you buy it but it's going to be off a bit since you just adjusted the focus point. If you are lucky your lense will be perfectly focused out of the box and you don't need to do this fix. It's easier to calibrate at home and focus on a door knob than on a dim star on a black screen.

Does not work with Rokinon 10mm f/2.8 lens, which has set screws holding the internal focus ring with permanent factory calibration. IOW I cannot change the position of the outer scale relative to the internal focus ring, nor can I move the internal focus stop at infinity. (I took out all three set screws, which are threaded into the internal focus ring.) This is one of the newer designs. The reason I wanted to change the infinity stop position, is that I'm using a Kipon shift adapter (with MFT camera) that has too much play in the dovetail ways so the lens sags and prevents infinity focus on one edge of the frame.

@knowitallproductions1178
@knowitallproductions1178 3 года назад
By returning it & purchasing an autofocus lens instead lol. (These lenses are “Manual focus” lenses, meaning that they don’t have “automatic” or Autofocus. That is intentional, not a defect. There are different reasons for manufacturing a lens w/ or w/o autofocus, just as there are different considerations to be made in choosing whether to purchase a lens w/ auto focus or not. Same for deciding whether to use manual or auto focus for a given photo shoot, etc etc. Most autofocus lenses can be set to turn off the autofocus deliberately, so that they can be manually focused instead. This is almost always a camera setting, but often it can also be done via a physical switch or button on the lens. There are numerous situations where manual focus is superior/more effective/the best choice for achieving the best/desired photo. Astrophotography (taking pictures of the stars in the sky) is one such example. Many landscape scenes are better captured via manual focus. The lens you have is considered “wide angle”, b/c it fits a lot more into the frame/picture than other lenses which have higher focal ranges (such as a “55mm or a “200-400mm”). Each of these lenses are better suited for different types of photography/subject matter/intended results. Your 14mm lens being manual focus is not a disadvantage at all, & in almost all ”sweeping landscape” type scenes all you need to do is to set the aperture based on your desired look/for proper exposure, & then just turn the focus all the way to infinity. That will maximize the amount of the photo that is in focus, in nearly all situations. Good luck & happy shooting/learning!

A little confused that you didn’t seem to find the absolute closest focus at the beginning of this, you eyeballed what was “close” and set it based of that? Wouldn’t you need to absolutely measure the minimum focal distance for this to be accurate ero am I missing something? Thanks for the video. I don’t have a floppy screen and therefore relying on the scale is important.

You need to enable the setting to allow the camera to operate without a lens. By default this is on. Since there are no electrical contacts on the lens, the camera doesn't realize there's a lens attached. Turn this setting off to allow use of full manual, non-electronic lenses.

i dont understand. the inner metal ring is the real focus ring. the outer plastic ring(has rubber on it) is just a shell has marks on it that LOCKS TO NOTHING. all your doing is just trying to align the MARKER, the inner metal ring is free to move from closest to infinite anyway is it??(coz the outer ring it connects to, is totally free)
@NoLensCap
@NoLensCap 7 лет назад
yeah, the markings for distance are pretty much independent of the actual focus. the ring with the set screws just locks onto the internal focus ring. but I am not a engineer, so I may be wrong.
@EnnTomi1
@EnnTomi1 7 лет назад
i just disassembled it all. after taking out the Aperture ring and another thin ring(the ring has "1:2.8 14mm ED AS IF UMC" works on it) you come across a grayish metal ring, which can be turned(3 long big screws), you can not turn to the point wherever you like, coz the 3 screw holes underneath this ring is fixed. and you can only adjust this ring by 360 degrees. Otherwise the lens hood will get into your frame, or you will have your marker ring (distance indicator ring) upside down. back to the grayish metal ring. By turning this ring 360 degrees a time. you essentially are adjusting the Flange focal distance. because i manage to get even closer than the minimal focus distance. Since there are only so many 360 turns you need to do, eventually you will get it. be super care when taking out the aperture ring, there is a tiny steel ball. which makes the sound when you adjusting aperture
