Aspherical means it isn't round. It's slightly tapered on its edge to reduce distortion. If it were spherical, it'd be a fisheye lens like the Samyang 12mm f2.8 Ultra Wide Fisheye.

I've just purchased this lens for Night/Low Light and Star work - I chose this over the Canon 10-22mm after seeing quite a few images showing how soft this lens was at the edges of the frame. The Rokinon quite frankly performs far better than the more expensive Canon.

I like this lens, but it has a lot of barrel distortion on a full frame camera. This is easily fixable and Lightroom.

Great review. Loved how you transition from talking about the lens to the beautiful photo collection and video work. I just purchased one and your review helped encourage my decision. Lens should be here today..can't wait!

I have two thoughts about this lens. I am using a cropped sensor Canon 750D and the focal distance equivalent for this lens would be 14mm x 1.6 = 22.4mm. I think that is resulting to a lens thats not wide enough for astrophotography. My second concern is that i am seeing some reviews about this lens talking about huge distortion with this lens. What is your experience of shooting stars - milky way with this lens and your cropped sensor cameras?
@JoeJacksonJr
@JoeJacksonJr 6 лет назад
Yea its not wide enough on APS-C.. Its good, but not ideal for most shooters. I still find myself that I rather prefer 10mmAPSC/16mmFF focal range or wider.

Looking for a budget friendly ultra wide angle lens? Known by a few other names like Samyang and Bower. The Rokinon 14mm ƒ/2.8 ED AS IF UMC lens is a manual aperture prime lens for both full frame and APS-C cameras. In this video review I explain why this lens could be one of those hidden gems you wished you knew about sooner. #rokinon #samyang #bower #14mm #ed #as #if #UMC #manual #lens #photography #gear #product #review

You can get fairly close to your subject, but the lens is not a macro. Hope this helps.

whats the sweetspot ( f/ ) for this camera? Also where do i set focus ring to get most focus ?
@JoeJacksonJr
@JoeJacksonJr 8 лет назад
The sweet spot is between f/6.3 and f/8 like most lenses. As far as "most focus" I am going to assume you mean the most depth of field. That would depend on how close the subject is and what aperture you were using. That said, if we were to assume you wish to use this lens to get a nice landscape photo, f/7.1 and lens set to about the Infinity mark would be were I would start. Hope this helps :-)

I don't understand what, ED AS IF UMC means... How does it differ from the DS cine lens? Are these just referring to the wide lenses? Crop or full?
@JoeJacksonJr
@JoeJacksonJr 8 лет назад
+alwil89 Thanks for commenting. Lens manufactures use many acronyms to help consumers understand what features come with their lens. For Samyang (Rokinon) lenses I believe ED = Extra low Desperation glass, AS = Aspherical glass, IF = Internal Focusing, (nothing moves outside the unit) and UMC = Ultra Multi Coatings. This lens is a full frame lens, however I use it on my older Canon T3i for time-lapse photography. But it still works very well on full frame and is IMHO one of the best budget wide angle lenses on the market. But it being a full manual lens, does tend to make those new to photography and these style of lenses a little put off by them. Hope this helps.

Thank you for your video. Could you please tell me what the diameter of the lens hood is please? (I want to know before purchasing if I can make a diy mod I successfully did with another wide angle bulb element fixed petal lens hood lens I have to attach a circular variable ND filter and depends on the lens hood's diameter).. Thank you!
@JoeJacksonJr
@JoeJacksonJr 6 лет назад
Outside diameter is around 88mm. Most everyone has been buying these attachments that go on the outside of the lens hood, but they are very costly.
@justinspirational
@justinspirational 6 лет назад
thank you- I appreciate the measurement- I've ordered the lens now.. going to get a 95 mm or smaller (down to 90mm) diameter lens hood to slip over around the rokinon lens hood and get a large circular variable ND filter that covers the rokinon glass well enough and screw into the secondary lens hood filter thread (possibly with a step down ring)
@JoeJacksonJr
@JoeJacksonJr 6 лет назад
Keep in ind it uses a tulip style lens hood. So if you put on a 90-95mm filter, you could get vignette in the corners. Most of the kits are using 200mm square filters.
@justinspirational
@justinspirational 6 лет назад
thanks- I just retested with the other lens I thought was a successful mod and you're right there is some vignetting- so I'm getting a 105mm circular variable ND filter to see if it works and maybe do a similar mod to this ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8KCLYomlbOM.html but otherwise I can return and go for the fixed lee filters type of mods out there

+Manny Fernandez For the timelapse videos and a huge majority of the test shots were all done on my older DSLR Canon T3i (600D). The rest were done on the Canon 70D. Cheers, Joe
@redauwg911
@redauwg911 8 лет назад
+Manny Fernandez... I think he said 70D,,, testing a wide angle full frame lens on a crop body is crazy,,, I use it on a D800E and the lower right corner is notably soft.. Others agree the lenses are not quite centred in the lens. Good lens for 300$ though. And the Nikon version is chipped. And the AF confirmation dot works in camera and exif data confirms 14mm
@JoeJacksonJr
@JoeJacksonJr 8 лет назад
+redauwg911 I wouldnt say its crazy. There are both pros and cons to using a lens designed for full frame cameras on a crop sensor camera. One pro like you pointed out is that a crop will only take the image from the center were its the sharpest. The con is if the lens optics are slightly soft, or it doesn't handle chroma very well. It will show up really quick on a APS-C camera due to crop sensors generally having a much smaller pixel pitch. That said, keep in mind this is a 14mm lens. 14mm on a full frame camera and its not being a fish eye is not an easy task. You will find most ultra wide angle lenses to have soft corners, some have really bad corners. But honestly unless you want to drop $2500 on the best Canon or Nikon has to offer at this focal range, your simply not going to get a lens better then this, at least in terms of over all sharpness. From my experience that is. Now like you pointed out I do use this lens on a APS-C body, thats what i got it for. I wanted a 20mm(ish) equivalent, manual aperture, manual focus lens for time-lapse photography. It works great for that. :-) Cheers, Joe

+Joe's Photo & Video Channel Didn't mean to be rude to you. Just you really need to put a full frame lens on a full frame camera to fully test it. The Nikon VR1 70-200 is another example of a lens that needs to be seen on a full frame camera for its short comings to be seen. Thanks for the review and the time you take to make these videos.

redauwg911 Hey Red, no worries I didn't take anything as rude at all :-). I appreciate the comments and feedback from everyone, even more so the discussions on topics and stuff like this. i tried the 3.1 cine version on my 70d. i returned it cuz no live view of the shutter speed on my lcd screen.. when i adjust the aperature ring i can see my screen gettin lighter and darker but thats not good enough. I do alot of night time long exposures and full liveview mode is a must for me for both shutter and aperature... my question is the 2.8 version have full live view mode? So when i adjust my shutter speed in live view and aperature i want both to show on my screen so im not taking a 100 long exposure shots trying to dial it in...
@JoeJacksonJr
@JoeJacksonJr 9 лет назад
+David C Thanks for commenting. Honestly is sounds like a manual lens isn't for you. Many photographers prefer all their information on the view screen. These are lens that you will want to use in Manual mode on your camera and for photographers that are comfortable shooting manual. Your camera will not have any clue what to do with your exposure using these lens, that is a downside. So Av and Tv modes are out of the question. So its up to the photog to know and tell the camera what exposure needs to be dialed into it. But once your comfortable with that you have a super sharp lens that comes in at 1/4th the price of its competitors. Cheers, Joe
@bob505470
@bob505470 9 лет назад
+David C use your cameras built in lightmeter to get correct exposure. What you are talking about is a limitation of the camera, not the lens. The 70d is not good enough in low light to give you a preview of what your long exposures of the sky will look like.
@JoeJacksonJr
@JoeJacksonJr 9 лет назад
***** I agree.. It has the option to "simulate" an exposure if it knows the aperture (not always perfect). But since this is a manual lens it doesn't have the info. I cant remember exactly what my 70D even thinks the aperture is with that lens (I think f/22 or null), I would take a look but its being serviced at Canon. (Battery shorted the camera boards out.. :-/ )

This lens must be pretty amazing because I have the t3i with stock lenses and my image quality is nothing like yours. Mind you I'm not a novice.
@JoeJacksonJr
@JoeJacksonJr 8 лет назад
+Reach Stock "kit" lenses are often a few low performing lens. They normally only allow you to resolve about %33 of your camera sensor resolution. Resulting in less sharp images. For example one would expect to get about 7P-MP of sharpness from the 18-55mm kit lens on a 18MP T3i. Were are the 14mm Rokinon/Samyang will get your more in the line of about 10 to 11P-MP. The Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS II should get you about 12 to 13P-MP on that same camera. (P=MP = Perceived MegaPixels). Hope this helps.
@Joshua-th4vn
@Joshua-th4vn 8 лет назад
Joe's Photo & Video Channel Definitely helps. I knew kit lenses were bad, but didn't realize how bad they hindered the overall quality.
@JoeJacksonJr
@JoeJacksonJr 8 лет назад
Reach They do a lot. I over all good lens I highly recommend to everyone and use myself is the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 Contemporary Lens. This lens has very good sharpness and focal range for those who may not be ready to drop a lot of money on Sigma's Art lenses. You can read up more on it here on Amazon: amzn.to/1Viwkg1. IMHO this is one of the best lenses for APS-C bodies.. Cheers, Joe BTW. check out my 500px page if you want to see photo examples were I used this lens. Many claim its not sharp at wide angle, which isnt true. It is but like all lenses it needs stopped down to be sharp. This lens is close to the sharpness of a Canon L lens when stopped down to f/6.3.
@Joshua-th4vn
@Joshua-th4vn 8 лет назад
Joe's Photo & Video Channel The Sigma 20mm has been on my list ever since it came out. I'm obviously into wide angles and the new 20mm by Sigma seems to fix a lot of normal problems associated with wide angles. There's still chromatic aberration but limited distortion and the quality is not compromised at all. The only problem I see with it is the price tag.

@JoeJacksonJr
@JoeJacksonJr 7 лет назад
Yes you can order the Nikon mount version. Keep in mind this is a manual lens. Which means you will have to manually focus the lens and manually adjust the aperture. Which isn't for everyone. Most people that watch my video and purchase one end up returning them becuase they are not ready for this type of lens just yet. Cheers, Joe

Defiantly some visible Chromatic Aberration
@JoeJacksonJr
@JoeJacksonJr 9 лет назад
LemonadeTurtle Crop sensor cameras are without a doubt torture on lenses. That said though, none of the photos shown in this video had any chromatic aberration. Not saying this lens would not have some, it is a $300 USD lens. But I have more more expensive lenses that have tons chroma which is far more noticeable. My EF-S 10-22mm for example is a train wreck under some lighting conditions. Point being this lens is like 90% great under $300. Canon will sell you a lens that is 100% great (EF 11-24mm f/4L) for $2999. Thats what I am trying to show here. What very little chroma you may or may not run into with this lens. Can be cleaned up in Adobe Lightroom. Cheers, Joe :-)
